NieR: Automata (minor location/playable character spoilers)
Mid-budget open-world third-person action RPG with a characteristically awful PC port. Playing with the fan patch and a gamepad is pretty much mandatory. A great combat system with plenty of customization via "Plug-in" chips to suit different combat styles, some simple and intuitive platforming, lots of secrets, and some shmup/hacking minigames that help break up the pace for the most part. Best of all, a good balance of keeping the story going whilst giving you plenty of sidequests that (usually) complement the themes raised by the main narrative. The usual melange of "anime" characterization and pseudo-intellectualism is going to be something very subjective depending on the player so I can't really say anything either way - personally I loved most of it, though the two initial antagonists were a bit cringey and the fourth-wall "true" ending (E) didn't work all that well for me, even if it had been built up to across the different playthroughs.
Speaking of multiple endings, there's a bit of confusion over how the game's structure works - effectively you play up to "Ending A" (which isn't really an ending), then retain all your items, save points and sidequests from that to play "Route B" which is a mix of new content and recycled story quests with a different story perspective. This is followed by "Route C" which is a continuation of Routes A/B, which leads to Ending C or D, opening up a Chapter Select and letting you replay the final boss to get the other ending AND open up a minigame (basically impossible without being connected to the Square/console network after multiple retries) for Ending E. Effectively, you're not replaying the game five times but experiencing one 30-40hr central narrative with a small amount of content reused in Route B. Still, you can see why it confuses people, and just encourages meta-gaming and looking shit up online, increasing the chances of encountering spoilers. Oh, and it asks you to delete all your save data to help other players get that ending, then makes you watch as every single quest, item, and save point is wiped from your computer. Can't say they don't follow through, I guess.
Overall one of most enjoyable games I've played recently and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes cute girls, fun melee combat and existential melodrama. Also, I hadn't played a single NieR/Drakengard title before starting this and it really makes no difference - they're more part of the same universe/thematic circle than sequels/prequels, so don't let that hold you back from jumping in.
