The swap file and VRAM settings seem interesting, but I haven't had any issues with downloads to my sd card.
I haven't played many heavy games on it, but its given me an extra 30+mins on battery when playing XCOM; probably because its not writing to the SSD as often. Just an observation, but most of these tweaks seem to get around design choices/limitations of the 64GB model.

Merida, again
Why would setting a larger swap file do anything? When it comes to games anyway. Is the Steam Deck so memory starved? You generally just decrease the swapiness amount to avoid swap as much as possible.

On its own, not much. It helps when used in conjunction with increasing the minimum VRAM available to the Deck. From what I read, the Deck prioritizes and/or sets aside system RAM for the CPU, sometimes to the detriment of the GPU. This can be exacerbated by certain games claiming RAM that it doesn't need. Some games, like Warzone on PC will claim almost all available VRAM even if its not using that much. So having a larger swap file will help guard against any instability or crashes from having more system memory set aside for VRAM, in case it really does need that memory. This is my understanding, anyway. Also they mention that Linux's swap file is faster than Windows because of the file system they use. People have done quick and dirty benchmarking and these adjustments do appear to increase performance for more demanding titles. This adjustment was presumably not done by Valve because it would take up over a third of the storage for the 64GB model.

is this tweak safe to do?
I haven't noticed any drawbacks, and so far only benefits. The tweak itself is fully reversable, and the VRAM minimum can be changed anytime in BIOS.

A Linux user has created a script for the Steam Deck that increases the size of the swap file, lowers the frequency in which it writes to the SSD, and enables TRIM (which is disabled by default). He also goes into how to set a minimum VRAM amount, which, when coupled with the larger swap file, increases performance for more demanding games by 8%-15%.

And drops it (pic not shown) where it shatters into pieces. As he grasps for it he rips a strap and starts flailing in the sky in an erratic matter. Screams are heard as he rockets to the ground exploding on impact like a hollywood episode of the A-TEAM.

DO NOT GAME & FLY! (Well via a big fan strapped to your back).

Don't know where to put this so I'll post here.
Linux being able to run games well on the Deck is forcing Microsoft to get off their ass and do some work, specifically by working on handheld mode. Competition is always good, although their Xbox app will still be cancer, I'm sure.
