Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical Date Update
Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical will now release on August 10th

We’re so excited - Stray Gods is under a month away!

We’re counting the days and we know you are too, but we need to make a slight adjustment to the calendar. We’re moving our launch date to
August 10th, 2023.

We want everyone to have ample space to check out Stray Gods when it launches. Baldur’s Gate 3 is hotly anticipated (by us, too!) and we want to give our fans room to celebrate Stray Gods.

We also want everyone to be able to play on their preferred device at launch. This is a huge undertaking for any team, let alone an indie shipping its first title. This extra week allows us to have performance parity as close as possible - across every platform.

We're so excited to share Stray Gods with you and we hope you'll join us on August 10th to play and celebrate this game we've poured so much love into!

Releasing that kind of game after Tumblr prime? Foolish or brave, I cannot decide.
I think there's less overlap with Starfield's crowd than there is with BG3's target audience. They should've moved further from BG3's release date and closer to Starfield.

Maybe they're foolish enough to believe this niche game has mainstream appeal?

Don't think so. But I think they want to avoid the "0 current players" thing that Mitsoda had with that visual novel they made.

Also yes, this game is like a decade too late.

"Stray Gods" is for very particular, have-to-been mainstream audience. Moden times "Pillars of Eternity".

It could be cult classic in 2016.

The game is apparently only a few hours long, which is simultaneously far too short for a £25 game and far too long to be sung at musical theatre style

Since I finished BG3 I decided to give it a try, and HOLY SHIT GAIDER OUTDID HIMSELF IN EXCEEDANCE

This is his yet the shittiest writing ever written by him. Dragon Ages are brilliant in comparison.

First of all, this is a visual novel. An average Steam garbage coomer visual novel is way better than this one though. It's THIS bad.
There are jokes like
Hero talking to a group of gods: "You live here?"
God: "We should live in some mountain TEE-HEE, but here we have wifi"

The story is bland and boring, you are amazing because you are a God and stuff happens without any sense:
- "you killed C"
- "no, I didn't!"
- "Her blood is on your hands!" (after they found her holding the victim in her arms)
- "oh... oh no! Okay, I'll do everything you say"

Also, whatever dialogue option or anything you choose is meaningless. The character just meets some people and believes them in everything, doesn't try to report a murder or any other action that would make sense.

But the worst part isn't even all that.

This is a MUSICAL visual novel, and the music isn't good. It's not Tenacious D, a silly story with enjoyable music. Not even close. The music here is subpar. Moreover, characters comment on each other:
- *sings*
- WOW how did you do that, your voice is AMAZING

Meanwhile me listening to a barely listenable song hoping it's short:
:hmmm:

I endured 1 hour but no way I'm gonna endure more.

Is Gaider on some heavy drugs? He seems to need help.

Any idea how hard this cratered after releasing this between all big releases? Like, they must've chosen this date because they ran out of funds or something, right?

Seems to have sold 10,000 or more and most of the people who bought it seem to like it. That sounds about right for a visual novel, and it's certainly not a Panic at Multiverse High-type flop. Gaider's independently wealthy, he didn't do this because he thought it'd make a lot of money.

So huge variation, but in my experience, PlayTracker is one of the more accurate ones. It also happens to be the lowest at 12.2K.

No idea the budget for this, so I haven't the faintest idea if that number is a success or failure.

If it's any comfort I couldn't even make it through the demo.

https://toadhousegames.com/blog/2021/4/2/cost-breakdown-of-a-visual-novel shows that that particular visual novel cost $10,000 to make. Stray Gods likely cost more on account of the songs, but probably not by a significant degree.

I would wager Stray Gods cost much, much more judging by one picture alone.

And as you mentioned, having a large cast of VOs bump the budget up a lot. Also, this game has a full wikipedia page (lol) and lots of marketing.

Did some digging and they raised at least $690k through a fig campaign, dunno about other crowdfunding.

Yeah this project likely went north of a million in budget, or "budget," at least.

So David Fagder's magnum opus is finally out? What a time to be alive. Someone should send him a bag of gummy dicks and congratulation postcard.

I guess people here are like me driven by morbid curiosity because who actually wants to play this shit.

This is a good thing in this case.
