There are really not that many good ones. If you want non weebshit VN try Our Red String. It's pretty good and nice writing. And what's finished provides a lot of gameplay hours and different paths. Main characters gain skills through interactions.

Writing\story first.
Setting is not college or school and your character doesn't live with stepmom and stepsister he plans to fuck. That filters like 90% of VNs already.
Preferably many choices to make.
Game been around for some time and has some actual content. Most of them unfortunately are patreon traps for idiots. So just download them for free.
Art. Don't care if animay cringe or just 2d cartoonish artstyle as long as it's competent and the game is not a slop.
Not fetish fuel. If a game has too many degen fetishes i'll pass.
Main character is not a complete bitchboy cuck. Not saying he should be bigdickdominator2000 though.
Game is not a silly harem henhouse where all characters except yours are bitches that boss you around or manipulate you into doing their bidding to get sex rewards.
Not woke. Of course writers try to slip some of their faggotry here and there. But there are limits.
Not daz3d normie shit.

Oh if you're really new in this genre then try the mega hit Summertime Saga. Or AKABUR games (check the poll above for the actual titles).

There's also a little pretty cool game The Sword Of Succubus, pretty decent gameplay, I was surprised.

There're also platformers like Grimhelm games as Dark Star etc.

Also Warlock and Boobs, pretty funny game but grindy, one should cheat there. Gay stuff turning off in the options.

Space Rescue Code Pink is pretty nice but still in development like most adult games.

The writing was pretty fun non the less and i laughed out loud a few times. But yeah, same formula and same character types like in majority of adult VNs. MC lives with mom and without father figure. You have one dimensional stereotypes like shy girl, trailer trash bimbo, stepsis, horny milf etc. And MC is a sex god despite looking like 12 year old boy with bad haircut.

Black Souls, two full games plus a short spin-off about one of the characters, the two main games are ~10 and ~20 hours long respectively, but have TONS of replayability and it's impossible to see all content in one playthrough (Black Souls II also has a sanity mechanism that makes you see the world differently based on how deranged you are at the moment, which results in different dialogues, encounters, visual, music etc.)

I played it for a few hours. Didn't like it. Crappy, grindy rpg maker game with boring souls like "story".

The rape every girl option is nice tho. If only there was a good game that came with it.
