So, I played the game a lot this weekend, coming straight from a full playthrough of DS3.
I won't say something that has't been said. The game nails atmosphere and level design in the first half, but there are some things I don't miss, like these long walks from the bonfires (I'm looking at you Anor Londo) or shitty hitboxes especially in grab attacks. Or bosses that have extremely limited movesets. Also rolling feels kinda weird, they've done an excellent job in improving this aspect.
Souls Series - Metallica comparison:
Demon's Souls - Kill'em All (Great ideas, raw and popularity comes from word of mouth)
Dark Souls - Ride the Lightning (Some of the best ideas ever, somewhat raw in production, a couple of filler areas/songs)
Dark Souls II - ...And Justice for All (Better production, long, sometimes disjointed, requires multiple playthroughs/listenings to be fully appreciated)
Dark Souls III - Black Album (The best production, some catchy areas/songs, best sales ever, but feels more professional than passionate)
Maybe Bloodborne is Garage Inc, a cover of their ideas of From and their influences of Metallica.
Get PVP Watchdog here:
http://www.nexusmods.com/darksouls/mods/849/?
Shows how many nodes you're connected to though it takes around up to 10 minutes for some to show up.
It's very helpful. I also found DSCM here:

It expands nodes. Just run it and then, run DS. I invaded in a couple of seconds a lot of times, it was great.
