I did a lot of Abbyss when it just came out. It's very profitable cancer. All instanced bullshit should disappear from Eve.

It's apparently profitable for a reason, since it's objectively more dangerous than just about any other rat pack, but almost complete freedom from pvp (except the rare abyssal trace hunters) is worth it. They could seriously nerf its payoff if people figured it out but it hasn't happened yet. Overall I'd say lowsec sites have the most absurdly low value for the risk.

Being speed tanked when you're solo, or true tanked because you picked the wrong filament for your weapons, or flying out of the zone and dying because you flew into the wrong cloud near the edge, really discourages people.

Escapist documentary about the making of EVE Online. A bit Reddit-tier but probably enjoyable enough if you've ever been a fan of the game.

It's the dream of the ultimate online computer game all over again. The dream was actually conceived by futurists long before complex computer games were possible and before the Internet.

In the ultimate dream game, you and thousands/millions of others can operate land, sea, air, and space vehicles; employ small arms, ATVs, and landing craft in the pursuit of hunting and warfare; build, navigate, and make use of structures, communities, cities, factions, and civilizations; cultivate, gather, forage, mine, and exploit; explore other continents, planets, solar systems, dimensions; interact with people, factions, civilizations, creatures of all kinds; etc.

In other words, the ultimate dream game is meant to be a simulation of real life, but with a lot of wish fulfillment and imagination and all the comforts of home in the next room.

This game isn't even close to being realized. The best that the best of them have been able to do is scratch up to half of those itches just passably well, within the narrow confines of a specific focus or two.

It's the same dream that was behind the insanely Pollyannaish popularity of Chris Roberts' thing (I hesitate to call it a scam, because I don't think it was intentionally so, at first, but rather became so when they realized they'd bitten off more than they could chew).

I don't mind admitting I have the same dream. I think many of us do, and not just for s-f but for all genres. But as one comes to be interested in games and their development, one comes to understand how far off it still is.

I remember being quite excited for WiS, and being very disappointed that it turned out to be just a bedroom.

i have the feeling (which is backed by truth and reality) that further we advance the less ambitious game are.
cinemaware fit on floppies what people could barely do on cds.
origin, "we create(d) worlds", wing commander and ultima underworld.
arena and daggerfall with its entire region.
robinson's requiem required a degree in medicine.
legends of valour.
full motion videos happened, and apparently only lucasfilm has been able to pull just one single decent game out of it. last years of the millennium hinted at a renaissance, but then consoles hit full strength and gaming died.

Lessons from EVE history videos:

1. CCP Devs got lucky once, and everything else has been comically clueless self-sabotage.

2. Several crucial moments in the biggest wars were determined by bugs or dev fiat.

3. Nobody wants or needs a pew-pew shooter in or attached to their mega spaceship economic battle simulator.

But dammit, I'm still tempted to resub.

Havoc Expansion notes are now out: https://www.eveonline.com/news/view/havoc-expansion-notes
Players can now choose to enlist with either the Angel Cartel or the Guristas Pirates.
Insurgencies are brand new gameplay that take part in Factional Warfare systems, however, it is possible for them to spread to include additional solar systems which are above 0.0 security and below 0.8 security.
As insurgency content is completed by either the Pirate or Anti-Pirate sides, systems will increase in Corruption or Suppression. When certain thresholds of Corruption or Suppression are reached, the system will go up to the next Corruption or Suppression stage. Each stage can bring in new effects and shape the rules of the system.
Players enlisted with either the Angel Cartel or the Guristas Pirates will have access to a brand new LP store. This LP store can be accessed from the Pirate FOB in the insurgency, or in Zarzakh. Players will earn LP for these stores through insurgency gameplay. (New ships and blueprints).
Corporation Projects is a tool that empowers corporation leaders to provide their members with direction, monitor their progress, and automatically reward them now too.

Just a FYI to players familiar with the game. Releases on November 14th.

That Corruption system is rather fascinating in that it can effect a system:

Stage 1 Corruption
Increased PVP loot drops for pirates 7.5% total bonus.
Faction Navy and Criminal Police NPCs stop spawning in high security systems.

Stage 1 Suppression
Increased bounties from NPCs 5% total bonus.
Increased security status gains from NPCs 5% total bonus.

Stage 5 corruption disables CONCORD in highsec except assisting criminals or pod killing. I'd say that's a game changer. Suppression really should have given a bonus to CONCORD response time, though.

Just now realized that with a good fleet, armor tanking might just be as much of a meme as hull tanking. Slow, low damage due to low slot competition with damage mods, and bad at healing. All those kangaroo pockets midslots don't matter if you have good teamwork and specialists.

Still love Amarr just because the curse and the phantasm are such awesome ships, but except for those I don't think anything beats Caldari, especially the scorpion navy issue and the onyx.
