6 is the best one, and below you can find very comprehensive and in-depth analysis about all the reasons why:

Back then something ugly in a good game meant it's good kind of ugly, because it's part of an awsome game. And yes, I am talking exactly about the PC icons and menu in general.

Isles of Terra is better than every entry that came after it. 6/7/8 has that gay hybrid RT/TB combat, no grid, and only 4 characters.

MM10 is pretty terrible, avoid like the plague.

Why do you think so ? That's the verdict I'd expect for IX.
For me X had way better combat than 6,7,8. It had satisfying charater building and exploration. Just on a smaller scale. Does that translate to terrible and plague ?

Also I'd put VII above VI because of the limitations of the character building. Limitations are a good thing.

On its own, it's an okay game, but I think MMXL ultimately fails to capture the spirit of the original M&M tiltes and leaves their fans disappointed.
For one, it's the scope. Even in MM1, you felt like you were actually exploring a world. In comparison, MMXL feels like exploring your front yard.
Second, it's the combat. I know what you mean when you say X has the better combat... but does it need it? Might&Magic for me is fighting 255 trashmobs in a matter of seconds by holding enter, or playing Enola Gay by flying over 50 mages and casting meteor shower, or rushing through castle alamos, dodging the numerous spells to get to the objective. MMXL has nothing of that, every combat is a slog you cannot skip or rush. There's no real flow.

I only ever played might and magic III when I was really young, but I always thought bard's tale was cooler. that game had animated monster portraits

Gates to Another World (Might & Magic II) has time travel.

And that gorgeous map.

Xeen, I'd rather replay it twice than go through M&M6 again.

Everyone here ejaculates over 6, which is odd because it's so rough and unpolished compared to 7 and Xeen. Oh but dungeons you guys, it has big dungeons. yuuuuuge.

IX is fine

When I finally played it I was surprised at how... not that bad it was. But it doesn't stand out to me much.

MM10 is pretty terrible,

I enjoyed it when I first played it but found it unbearable on a replay. The tactical-ish combat feels at odds with M&M design. But it does have more party comp wank than p much any game in the series.

It's a matter of taste I guess, but what is so great about this kind of combat? MMX had more of a Wizardry-style combat which I enjoy more.

But yeah, the game was definitely a bit too short.
