Yeah ive watched about two hours worth of gameplay videos on youtube and youre constantly picking up stuff (like in literally every 10 seconds or so), its very annoying, especially with those repetetive and drawn-out animations.

Lurking this thread has created such bizarre feelings in me - what if you are all just lying? How about this concept of nuThief being actually such a franchise-rape is just one horrid dream?

I'm going to download the game. I already feel dirty. I'm picking up the phone, am ready to call the nearest friendly asylum. GUGU GAGA.

So is this better than Dishonored?

Dishonored is a pretty good game. Most Codex complaints are about lack of challenge more than anything else. Thief has a lot more wrong with it, apparently.

It's a lot harder when you play it like a Thief game instead of spamming rat plague all the time. Use the achievements as a guide and play without enhancements and violence on hardest difficulty and it's a very solid experience.

Sequel plans are underway:

Thief launches today in the States, and Eidos Montreal’s Nick Cantin has stressed that there’s already scope for a sequel.

“Nothing’s announced yet but we’re very keen to see how people respond to the game,” lead level designer Daniel Windfeld Schmidt told OXM last week.

Then; Cantin chipped in to say, “We’ve built a really big universe around the first game, and there’s a lot of layers to it – the world is really deep. So there’s a lot of possibilities to jump on.”

Schmidt concluded, “Thief is really unique in its mentality. When it came out it was new, it was fresh, it was very different to all the other games of the time, which were very one-directional. I think we have the same situation with next gen game consoles now,” added Cantin. “There’s no game out there that’s really like this.”

Sequel plans are underway:

So there’s a lot of possibilities to jump on.”

Ironic considering you cannot jump in the actual game....

They'll just have to swoop the fuck outta there instead.

Gameindustry does a decent roundup of reviews: Critical Consensus: Thief struggles with its ancestry

Some quotes (which are mostly quotes from other reviews):

there is very little here to make you feel that you're playing a Thief game rather than, I don't know, Powercut Parkour: Emo Edition or Palace of Westminster Burgling Sim 2013.

The sheer volume and variety of trinkets for Garrett to steal is overwhelming, for example, making the player feel, "more like a diligent cleaner than a master thief.

The sense of historical place is immediately broken by guards that speak in a range of unlikely accents from Texan to Aussie, and who endlessly complain about how much they long for a cup of coffee. The scriptwriting also fails to find a coherent voice or tone.

It's never really clear what the people using the artifact intend to do with it, other than an omnipresent mostly vague sense of 'bad things'. The main 'bad thing' the artifact is responsible for is a poorly developed plot that shoves Garrett into objectives that don't revolve around stealing as much as possible.

In the latter half of the game, when a glimpse of that openness was dangled in front of me once again, Thief snatched it away with murderous AI and controls that didn't feel up to the challenge.

They didn't do it in a Texas accent, though. What feels natural in a well-written and well-acted script can become out of place in the kind of utter mess that is Thief 4. These kind of issues feed each other.

(But writing a good AI bark set is a challenge anyway. I have tried it before and failed.)

Messing around TTLG, and I never heard about this before:

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128793

it's a project to merge all sections/zones within the levels of thief deadly shadows. So while the nuthiaf has small sections, the one before may in fact get rid of one of it's main problems.

Now that we are on the subject of thief 3 anyway, does anyone know a fix for windows 7 64 bit machines? The game crashes at the same point everytime :(

Three out of the four highest reviews on metacritic are from Italian websites.

http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/thief/critic-reviews

I guess the eurocrisis made all commodities cheaper
italian journos are a joke (except me, of course  ), they're either totally, absolutely, utterly incompetent or they make a bragging point of not playing before rewiewing.
also they never ever take their words back, even if put in front of crushing evidence: "invisible war"? "our review code was perfect, whoever has technical issues it's because he got a pirated copy".

I did a ghost run on the hardest difficulty without any magic upgrades, got all those achievements at once. It was moderately difficulty but abusing blink with mouse aim still made it too easy, IMO. It's very solid though, I agree, especially with one or more of those restrictions imposed.

Deleted this turd.

Don't bother trying it. I could improve my German over the time I spent with this game. And I spent one-two hours or so.

There was also some sort of scandal from some years ago about some journos not playing their review codes because otherwise they couldn't get the magazines out in time, employees not being payed much and some university courses by people(affiliated to edge italy/eurogamer.it)to teach game design being p. much frauds but I remember little atm and I stopped following the whole thing anyway after a while.Has there been new drama about that?

Also link to any of your reviews plz

Guys, this is not the same game as Thief 1 or Thief 2, but that isn't an indictment. There were a lot of ridiculously bad elements in the original game.
For instance, you could "hide" in a completely bare corner, where the walls and floor could be clearly seen, yet somehow you're invisible. How does that work?
The AI was the best we'd ever seen at the time, but that really isn't saying much. The bad guys could be less than an inch from your face, the lightgem partly lit, and they still wouldn't see you.
Sound: What thief runs around in shoes that sound like oak blocks on concrete?
The light gem: hell, there are mods in the original games to remove this giant, glowing wart that's right in the center of your vision. I would argue the new version is much, much improved.
Jumping/running/the swoop: Tell me, who didn't exploit the original jumping mechanism to outrun their enemies? You could kill yourself by running into a wall at speed. This is Thief, not Mario Brothers. After playing for an hour, I would argue that the new movement feels pretty natural.
Even Thief 2 had shitty graphics, by *any* standard of the time. Thi4f (or whatever we're calling it here) is light-years ahead.
Sound: How many times have I watched Benny/etc go on a tirade, without moving, then pantomime his whole tirade without speaking? The voice/animation sync was frankly not very good in the originals.
Writing: Guys, I *loved* the first game. LOVED it. I bet I played the pre-release demo 40 times. However, I gotta say that the writing in Thief 1 isn't holding up to nostalgia, though. Thief 2 was the better game here. T1 had a bunch of missions that really didn't follow a coherent plot much, the whole thing feels kinda disjointed now.

So you mean just like in thief 1 when you blackjacked someone by tapping one button?

I'll make a backup of my 'review' in case Idiots Montreal gets butthurt.

So, I played this game.
I feel like it'll be a waste of time to write a long and coherent thing, so I'll outline the bits of the game and then tell how it feels overall.

- Sound is bad. It lacks any complexity and just breaks the silence, not adds to it. Sometimes I feel like someone just put a couple of sounds together just to fart in my ear.
- Music is not really bad, but it feels off during some moments. And it makes me feel like I'm playing Batman's Creed: Arkham City - Thief Reskin Mod.
- Voice acting isn't really bad, but when put together with the awful story it just makes me think 'why should I care' and 'shut the fuck up already'.
- Graphics are both good and bad. They are good on the technical side, but awful on the artistic. Yep, the screenshots of the game may look artistically good, but it's one hell of a bitch to navigate through the environment. I had less problems navigating in Condemned: Criminal Origins, which I always play with lowered brightness and flashlight off.
- Gameplay-wise the game has ideas that simply don't work and break the game. For example, who decided that the swoop button must be the same button that is used for climbing? Who decided that the game must have the 'target and press the button, Garrott will do everything else' kind of control?
- Combined with awful level design that makes 6th-gen console games look good, it turns the game into the 'Help Garrott escape the room by finding a way that a false frenchie designed for you' kind of game.

Overall it feels like some design student decided to put together his first fan mission, but the only games he really played were Call of Duty and Fable: The Lost Chapters.
