The Outer Worlds Will Be a Bit Smaller Than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Says Obsidian

A big-budget game that's being released on console and PC will be smaller than a game that is literally small enough to be played on a mobile phone. In 2019.
I don't think they're talking about the space it takes up on a hard drive.
Obviously not. The graphics and such will take up more space on the drive, but if the starting area is the size of Peragus that's fucking pathetic for a AAA game in 2019.

You're a bit late with that when first person shooters started shipping five hour campaigns over a decade ago

I thought this was funny:

You people are fucking morons. You'll shit on games like Mass Effect to no end but when Obsidian releases something along the same lines it's totally fine. Oh, but if FPS games do the same thing (they don't, considering those games primarily have appeal for multiplayer) there's no issue. The only way this could possibly be justified is if they only charge a measly price for the game, which I doubt will happen.

LoL Kotor 2 is a good game but pretty small in length, also a lot of cut content. If it truly is smaller than kotor2 then it will be pathetic. If they want to do a fucking action rpg then at least try to do it right, this is like half the Technomancer or anything PB have put out. And when you compare it to the games they try to replicate, mainly new Fallout games.....well it is a sad story. It will be just another obsidian failure.

I would rather have a shorter and more appreciable game than something infested with vile and meaningless 'content' for the sake of game length.

Fuck off with this retarded cliched excuse! I would rather have a fucking lengthy game with meaningful content,it will be fucking 60 bucks AAA game! RPG is not a genre where you could do short games.

Did you like dumpsterfire's or PoE1's 'meaningful content'?

Ton of trash mobs that required the same brainless input with minimal difference in each iterative fight.

In a way Leonard wasn't joking when he called this a "next generation of a throwback". Story-driven, non-open-world, AAA-quality RPGs are now exceedingly rare. RPGs have gotten longer not shorter, and there's now a generation of gamers for whom making a shorter RPG is actually oldschool (KOTOR was 15 years ago, folks).

Would it be nice if it was a $50 game instead of $60, like in the old days? Obviously yes, but that's true for everything.

If the game will have replayability like AP, it'll be effectively at least 3x of whatever the length for me, probably more.

Has anyone here consistently argued that CRPGs need to be longer? If your main complaint about The Outer Worlds turns out to be that it’s too short, that’s a high quality problem. I’d rather have a good 25-40 hour game than a mediocre 100-hour game. They could spend the money to add in a massive open world full of herbs to pick and endless radiant quests to fulfill, but who the fuck wants that?

I didn’t feel robbed by Fallout or PS:T or Bloodlines or MotB or AoD, five great CRPGs that are shorter than KOTOR2 (I didn’t feel robbed by KOTOR2 for that matter, at least not with the restored content mod). If Tim and Leonard leave you wanting more, it means they’ve done a good job.

A lot of people here like Alpha Protocol "this much."

Additionally, if Obsidian can't make a good 15 hour game what makes you think they can make a good 60+ hour one?

Mass Effect 1 was ok. Much better than DA:O anyway.

Also I am not sure if you are mentally challenged or trolling but what they mean is the game will feature a 20-35 hour campaign likely, maybe taking up to 40 hours in a competitionist run. Which is about what is the length of what you'd expect of a game that's supposed to be like VTMB and Alpha Protocol, as a hub-based high reactivity game. Not talking about filesizes or area sizes.

It's more a comparison to games like Fallout New Vegas, as well as possibly Skyrim and POE in how long it will be. Those games take up to 100 hours and perhaps even more due their sandbox nature, comparatively a 25 hour game is not much but it's not short either.

A short game for me was dishonored 1 and 2 or Tyranny.

The Outer Worlds isn't going to even approach the quality of those games at all. Don't kid yourself.

Cool but what does that have to do with length of the game or whether it's appropriate length? Is this an argument making the assertion that if the quality is lower the game should be longer so that we might play a worse game for longer?

When you justify a $60 game being shorter than an already short game from 2004 on the grounds that there have been good short games (also released in the previous two decades), your argument is invalid if this game isn't of comparable quality at all to those games.

RPGs have gotten longer not shorter
:deathclaw:
Did they? I still remember playing for a lot of hours in games like betrayal at krondor, darklands,MM and wizardry games,Arcanum, torment etc etc.

Did you like dumpsterfire's or PoE1's 'meaningful content'?
:hmmm:
Not every game that have long content has a meaningful one. Why don't you give Kingmaker as comparison?! Oh and PoE2 is not that long,it is around 30 hours to 100% without the DLC. Also i did enjoy the first one, more or less.

Fallout or PS:T or Bloodlines or MotB or AoD, five great CRPGs that are shorter than KOTOR2
They are not shorter for certainty!

A lot of disgusting sycophant in this thread, constantly trying to excuse the game.

In 2004, $50 was equivalent to $66 of today's money, so you're actually paying less. :M

The difference being that I didn't regret my purchase of KotOR 2. If I knew Outer Worlds would be of the same quality I also would pay that much for it today and not regret it, but I know for a fact that won't happen because I view KotOR 2 as a uniquely good game, like Bloodlines. Most people I know who played KotOR 2 and Bloodlines did not put nearly as many hours into it as I have and they would not be willing to pay $60 for it today. Expensive RPGs today should have enough content to justify their price tag. To give you an idea, I spent $30 on The Witcher 3 and in retrospect I would be willing to pay the base price or even full market value for it today, because the amount of content and the relatively good quality of it justify the price tag.

So did I step into twiligt zone or what am I getting this right? You both are saying Obsidian games are shit but they should be longer?

If Obsidian games are shit and not worth the price tag, just don't buy it?
Not really,i don't care how long their games are. The new obsidian has nothing to offer me,they were prized for the writing and nothing else. Now they don't have it,so i am not interested in their games. Still in the end i will pirate the game mainly because there is nothing else to play, for fuck sake i am even replaying elven legacy now. I am more annoyed at how people are closing their eyes and coming up with stupid excuses. A length is very important part of the RPG genre, any serious game should have a decent amount of hours in it. The most important part in most RPG is the side content and the exploration, you can't have much of that in 15 hour game. I consider 40-50 hours a prefect length for an RPG :obviously:. This just another cherry on top to be honest, first the writers are bunch of retarded tumbr cunts, lazy world building, that stupid system about negative traits, then dyke like characters.

VTMB: Bloodlines for me was 20-45 or so, if I remember correctly. Given the people involved and this being a similar style (first person real time instead of isometric rtwp or turn-based), I'd be plenty happy with anything in that range.
