I think production values and graphics will ultimately be biggest obstacle for this to become a serious hit. It doesn't look bad, but you can definitely see it's not some $300 million blockbuster made by a team of 500 people.

This is true but New Vegas was the exact same engine as Fallout 3 with reused assets and yet it was a big hit. The target audience for this game now will be people disappointed by recent Bethesda and Bioware titles and they'll be happy enough with this game given there's nothing else.

What on earth is a "whedonesque" dialogue.

Lots of self-aware pretentious humor sprinkled with some sexual subtones as well as "strong female" characteristics (i.e. positive portrayal of infertile husks equipped with a vagina)
Basically the current culture of the west.

What the fuck is that shit in the middle of the image? A fucking quest compass? Disgusting.

It's sci-fi. You faggots never heard of GPS? This isn't Morrowind.

Heh, been waiting for "an RPG Renaissance" for 25 years, nothing on the horizon yet. Only graphics and animations have been improved everything else is either still stuck at the 90's or is worse now.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker
Insomnia: The Ark
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Underrail
Age of Decadence

Just fuck off with your edgy statements. Piece of shit.

Unfortunately, from the looks of it, companions seem to be as generic as everything else in here, design wise at least. We have this non descript guy, this short haired chick with typical no nonsense attitude, and a black chick with red hair( you can spot her in the ship). That leaves us with another 3 companions. I wont hold my breath

Edit. It was mentioned in one of the previews there are 6 sillhouettes in the menu, and if you watch the video there are six rooms for your mates.

I watched the trailer again on my PC and it doesn't look as bad as I initially thought. Gameplay video also looks nice, I like the artstyle. However, I am disappointed they are using XP system instead, for example, Bloodlines system for gaining experience. There is also too much combat, as if this is some generic linear shooter.

What is this Firefly that's being mentioned here
It's a tv series that has a cult following. At first sight, it's very weird and you think it's gotta be something insanely stupid. But give it a chance and... you will either love it or hate it. There's a very specific humor there, but some things are pretty dark. Great chemistry between actors, interesting characters, good music. The thing got so popular they made a full blown movie (Serenity) to finish the story.

It was cancelled because Fox aired episodes out of order, which only confused viewers. It became a thing after its DVD release, when someone discovered that when watched in order, it became coherent and not bad at all.

If you decide to give it a chance, I recommend watching at least the second episode after the pilot, the tone changes a bit.

Regarding The Outer Worlds gameplay footage - except the terrible combat they showed (which is the fault of whoever was playing the game and how much (s)he sucked at it, also it's common to use something similar to godmode for such footage, in which the player receives damage, but health will never drop down to zero), I really like it. I hope you can fire that pistol as fast as you can click the left mouse button. I love that there is no "voiced protagonist", the dialog options look promising. I like :)

edit - I'd like to see some sort of a direct feed video of this. The youtube videos seem to be compressed to shit and look like a bad 480p encode.

Since they don't want to confirm the number of companions, I'm guessing there are at least 7. Last one being weird as fuck something probably. Or a dog... which would be the last nail on beth's coffin :P

My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
Whedonesque aesthetics is a cancer, people should stop mentioning it as a good thing. It may have worked well in Buffy and Firefly, but it is not something good on its own. E.g. nuBioware dialogs and characters are basically whedonesque. And they are mostly horrible.

Writing in The Outer Worlds - at least those bits of it which were shown in screenshots and a gameplay video - is pretty abysmal and slapstick. I would not even say that it is that akin to Firefly, as for now it feels much more stupid and less subtle, and Firefly writing itself was not too subtle or clever to begin with.

I don't know about Whedon aesthetics (because I don't think he has a keynote visual style), but it's definitely true that his writing style has influenced a lot of mediocre writers in the video game industry. Whedon's own dialogue is often terribly kitschy... someone trying to do a poor man's imitation of it is doomed to failure.

What on earth is a "whedonesque" dialogue.

Vaguely pretentious, thinks-it's-clever-and-cute text full of quips and sprinkled with words like squee. Basically, the starting text for a lot of mediocre late 20's/early-to-mid 30s writers.

Someone mentioned in a preview that he saw 6 silhouettes, 2 unlocked, corresponding to companions.

Obsidian announced this game at the exact perfect time and are now reaping the benefits of everyone talking about this game.

Modern obsidian writing, horrendous boredlands style zanny setting and aesthetics, (bethesda style) fallout gameplay complete with quest compass, slow down and (seen in the gameplay vid) even VATS like critical animation with the super janky camera angles that seem to happen during critical hits, stiff animations with face animation during dialogue still not reaching HL2/bloodlines era quality.
Whoever is optimistic about this needs to have his name written down in a list. Of people to execute, whose charred remains will be used as fuel during harsh winters.

Expectations from first promos - Arcanum+Bioshock
Reality - Fallout 4+Mass Effect :negative:

But this is Cainarsky project and they're not senile yet, so... Fingers crossed?

Does gender have any affect on NPC attitudes and dialogues? More importantly, can I become a porn star in this game? :D
