stygian looks good. I used to be pretty excited for disco elysium, but it'll probably play like an adventure game with a lot of c&c. Might be good, but watching a couple of vids that I hadn't seen before didn't fill me with confidence, writing wise.

No matter how many times you hit that disagree button, AoD and Underrail will not become any prettier visually. Arguing that they are NOT ugly is a lot like arguing Witcher 3 is NOT shallow in terms of systems and mechanics.

Sturgeon's Law will definitely apply.

I call AoD & Underrail amateur efforts because they took so long to make, not because they're bad (or bad-looking) games. RPGs aren't supposed to take 7-10 years to develop. That's not the basis for a real genre resurgence.

It's also an accurate term to use that has no reflection on quality.

a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons.Compare professional.
an athlete who has never competed for payment or for a monetary prize.
a person inexperienced or unskilled in a particular activity:

The AoD team and Styg weren't experienced game developers or even being paid to make games; they were working on their pet projects without pay and did not truly become professionals until Underrail and Age of Decadence were available for sale.

Well, it's not like US was entirely out of the loop.

I felt like Serpent in the Staglands slipped through the cracks for many and Copper Dreams is still pending.

Infinitron specifically excluded American games like Copper Dreams, Iron Oath, and Queen's Wish from this "third wave" because they are indie, rather than AA.

That said, I doubt most of the AA American companies (HBS, Stoic, and inXile) are finished with this genre yet; Stoic and and HBS seem to be gestating and inXile is finishing WL3.

It is however true that the economics of AA RPG development in many ways favor second-world economies over the Anglosphere.

But in principle I completely agree - we need more games with levitation!

Yep. Morrowind has it too... I love when magic can do more than throw fireballs. Raise undead army, craft constructs, levitate, shapechange, dominate others, etc is very interesting.

Are any of them any good?

And if so which ones?

The only one I've played is Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones and, whilst the atmosphere was superb, as a game to play it was fairly shit tbh.
