As discussed in various other threads, I think there's a very arguable theory that nerds in general stopped reading as they age, because the publishing houses and various apparatuses of adult lit have been throughly colonized by shit, like all media.

When you look at older stuff, there's so much quality available. Then you look at new fantasy/sci-fi and it's all reminiscent of modern Hugo Award winners.

The only modern fantasy novels I've read are from Andrzej Sapkowski, Witold Jabłoński, George R. R. Martin and Scott R. R. Bakker (why do so many authors steal Tolkien's R. R.?) and while none of them conceals his fetishes, they still deliver better writing that 90% of the fantasy writers of old, save for Tolkien, Zelazny, Howard and several others. I think I can live with a few kinks if it gets me good reading.

I dunno how "new" I would consider these guys, especially since they're all boomer-age and started the series that put them on the map at least two decades ago. Not familiar with Witold Jabłoński tho.

By new I mean going to a large chain bookstore and looking at what's being promoted.

They fucked up Cyberpunk 2077 on release but made it "good" later on. It's another generic rpg game in the end.
Witcher 3 made the expectations for the 4th skyrocket, they're gonna fuck up in both categories.

One factor that made witcher enjoyable was Geralt being a interesting character. Ciri is boring as fuck. I felt like A ciri led game could've been a good spin-off game, but that wouldn't sell well would it?

This is it.
Geralt is an interesting character that you don't mind playing, not just that for men he us alpha and gets to bang hot chick's, but also because he is cynical and world beaten and you feel sometimes you are forcing him into having fun against his will.
He actually feels like a fully formed character that is being pushed about by the player (destiny)

Ciri is just a plot device as a magic mcguffin.

I don't want to play a monster hunter game as Ciri, I want to play the game as Geralt banging hot chicks and moaning about drowners and politics and then getting pissed up with dwarfs.

Men want to play games as Errol Flynn, because it's FUN, you know like A GAME.
They don't want to play Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.

Nor do women either, they just want to cosplay as Dorothy and don't buy games.

They divert most of the European funds, and all we get now as reward is a pozzed, the worst kind of woke piece of garbage ,complete with prudishness and likely no sexual content, since even the Witcher cards were deemed problematic. It features a masculine girl boss and a trailer that reeks of DEI. CD Projekt is heading down the same path as Ubisoft. The Witcher 4 will tank like Star Wars Outlaws, and they’ll end up making gacha games in a sweatshop for Tencent.

Ciri's scar is supposedly horrific tho, which CDPR didn't make it so in W3; they shrugged it away with Geralt commenting her scar's healing beautifully and Ciri saying Avallach giving her remedies iirc, how times change.

The look of Ciri is certainly the least of my concerns about this game. They've already retconned the lore, and by the end of the books, she seemed more aligned with an Arthurian story. Can only expect the worse.

It sounds as awkward to read as some of the stuff George R.R Martin and Stephen King put out there. Kind of sad, really - I used to be an avid reader but even as a kid a lot of stuff in fantasy novels made me raise an eyebrow and I turned to video games instead. Now they're also being less than subtle in regards to the weird kinks of the writers.
