I have a hard time with this thread. Every time I look back at it, I want to play again. And then I remember how the game turns me into a masochist.
What do you mean? All Wizardries or only Wizardry V - Heart of the Maelstrom?

Honestly, I am a very big fan of Wiz6-7-8 but I have never had the nerve for earlier Wizardries.
Wiz1 and Wiz4 were somehow tolerable. I have finished that two game.
But I cannot play Wiz5. I am trying again and again. But that terrible user interface.
It has zero fun factor for me.
Masochist is indeed the perfect word here.

This game is brutal. (or random)
My Level19 ninja made a mistake during identifying a jax sling trap on dungeon level 1.
My Level19 bishop could not identify a normal battle axe. Only for the 7th try.

I've recently started playing Wizardry 1 (DOS) after getting through most of 6 and then getting stuck near the end. I've also played a bit of 8, but didn't get super far. It's been pretty fun mapping out the dungeons and it hasn't been excessively hard yet. Although I'm literally only on floor 3, so I'm sure it will ramp up. I did have a frustrating moment where I used all my gold to revive a character and then the priests fucked up the resurrection and turned him to ash. I did read the manual, so I knew it was a possibility, but it still made me want to throw my PC at the wall. Even with
the frustrations, this is a pretty cool game.

Compare to eg Poker.

Life's pretty random. Death's the deterministic one.

If you think Wiz 1 and 5 are brutal, try Wizardry Chronicle. It's the only RPG in which I've grinded or scum saved for better results (at Temples).

After I lost one of my fighters, I decided to just replace them with a backup character. While trying to explore floor 3, I got ambushed by a group of 7 ninjas and lost my priest. I may just have to make new party pretty soon.

I recently got into the Wizardry games and Wiz-likes. I’m working my way through 6. I just got out of the castle and felt pretty cool after knocking around that scary plant monster. Then I ran into two giants and ... :negative:

Yeah that was basically my first experience getting to that area. Someday I need to return to that game and actually finish it.

After my party wiped in the DOS version, I decided to swallow my RPG gamer pride and switch over to the PSX version of Wizardry 1. I may be a casual now, but this version is so much easier to control and play. I got the amulet for the private elevator and I'm about head to Floor 6. Also, why did Werdna allow an elevator that lets do-gooders murder him more easily?

This is the law of all fairy tales. Good triumphs over evil, because evil is prone to self-destruction. If you have studied world history, you should know that this is what happens. However, evil often tells us that if it is not destroyed, then it is good. This perversion found support in the postulate of the "right of the strongest" so that the slaves of the system would not grumble. But we should not hope that evil will just take and destroy itself, no. It will slowly rot, and its slaves will rot with it. Slaves must understand the role of the Strongest, and overthrow him in order to build a new better world from his remains! There should be cooperation among slaves, there should be a desire to work, an ideological basis and responsibility should be needed.

I beat the PS1 version of Wizardry 1. I was on floor 10 killing some enemies and getting some loot and I triggered a teleporter trap on a chest. This teleporter sent me to the part of the floor that leads right to Werdna. I healed up, went into the battle, and proceeded to spam all my high-level spells. He died in one turn and the adds soon followed. My mage was the only one who died. Overall, I reallly liked this game. I felt like the later floors were less involved, but I still had fun mapping them all. I might play Wizardry 2 at some point, but for now I'm gonna get back to some Elminage Gothic.

Final Party (A couple of them got level drained):
Dwarf Fighter Level 10
Dwarf Fighter Level 14
Dwarf Samurai Level 12
Gnome Priest Level 14
Human Bishop Level 13
Elf Mage Level 14

Wizardry II is really short and you could probably finish it over a couple of days if you wanted. Wizardry III is more meaty, but a lot of it is bullshit. Wizardry IV, as you may know, is more like a puzzle adventure game using the Wizardry engine.

The real gem of the classic Wiz games in Wizardry V, which I hope you'll play sometime.

Playing Wiz5 right now using the SNES version. Are there any significant mechanical differences between this and the Apple II/PC version?

It's not going to wipe characters off your save file when they die. That's about it.

Does anybody know if there is any point in playing Wiz3 with (descendants of the) characters that killed Werdna in Wiz1? I know there's a symbol that appears in the character stat page, but I have no idea if it's just decorative or not.

English version censored the titties.

For imported characters stats are capped at 15, which is just under the bonus threshold. So it may actually be better with new characters.

The SNES version in English censored a lot of things:
the censorship is so laughable that instead of asking for a drink Renegade Rob asks for a soda.
And enemies are not killed, they are "destroyed":lol:
And the Duck of Sparks no longer talks about spirits, but "ghosts", thus ruining the pun. Those fucking American Nintendo people and their fucking censorship; how I despise them.

Well I'm stuck on level 1. My thief is unable to pick any of the locked doors, and also Milwa doesn't actually light the dark tiles.

No, no, you are not casual at all. The DOS version of Wizardry 1 is quite frankly broken. You will lose stats more than you are supposed to upon leveling up, making a difficult game even harder.
As far as I know, the PS1 port is the closest version there is to the Apple ][ version.
Congratz on beating it; I did the same last year and really enjoyed myself.

Then why not play the Apple ][ version? You even get some chromatic aberration effects before they were cool :-P
