If you're gonna import, do the whole trilogy from 6-8 for the full experience. I did that and it was very cool, there's also some very tangible benefits from importing which you don't get from starting fresh.
Already done 6+7, and I have the final save game from 7. At least I hope so. Which file(s) do I need?
You only need to put the save from 7 in the respective folder for 8. Don't exactly remember which folder but I'm sure you can google that.

Insert Title Here Pathfinder: Wrath
It’s a straight answer. Cleve obviously likes the class/profession switching dance - he built his game around it. Wiz8 took it out.

I imported my ten year old save game from Wiz 7 into Wiz 8 without problems. The party crash landed on a beach with Vi Domina who said she'd leave (but didn't move) and we'll meet again in Arnika.

The only item that seems to have been imported is a Spear of Death.

What with a new class among other things, I think I'm better off just creating new characters.

BTW, I noticed that if I Alt-Tab the keyboard commands stop working.

How does it fit into the broader Wizardry narrative or is it just standalone ?
Most Japanese Wizardries are stand-alone though many clearly reference the world-building of Wiz1-5
I havent played any of the Wizardries before, would you recommend this as a good introduction to the game world and mechanics?
I assume yes? I can't really give a proper answer because I've been playing Wizardries for a long time and you kind of lose perspective of whether it is good going in fresh. Though most of the entries explain themselves well enough as you play along when it comes to the mechanics. Just, you know, it's still a variant of Wizardry so expect this to be at least somewhat old-school and trying to kill you in all kinds of ways.

Honestly, I would just start with Wizardry 1. It's a short but very enjoyable game. You can play the PSX version if you want an easier time with some QOL features (optional automap, etc.). Playing through Wiz 1 will make all other Wiz games a lot easier to understand and play imo.

From there, Wiz 2-4 are optional imo in that 2+3 are basically just expansion packs or more of the same as Wiz 1, and Wiz 4 is more like a puzzle adventure game in the Wizardry engine.

Wiz 5 makes some minor changes to combat and the thief class that future games (especially the Japanese games) have since incorporated. It's an awesome game, but very difficult and pretty time consuming.

I decided to go into Wiz1 with graph paper and a pencil until I can develop an alternative. How do you guys typically make maps? This is how much I mapped out before my party died:

I'll probably have to redo this one, since I read afterwards in the manual that you always start at the far southwest, while I assumed that you started in the center.

I like to dot the steps our party makes, and then draw in the walls later. Usually navigating intervals such as a stretch of corridor, or after exploring a room. A highlighter is also good, to move over each sqaure and then add in details afterward.

And yes, I remember especially in Eye of the Beholder, drawing a map in one part of graph paper only to run out of room because of not knowing the correct starting position.

At least the Wizardry devs were kind enough to tell you about the starting position in the manual.

I use Grid Cartographer for this. Obviously it allows you to go infinitely in any direction, but it also allows you to rotate your map after you cast Dumapic and realize you're facing west instead of south.

Dumapic really helps, you can use that spell to get your starting coordinates.

What exactly affects the odds of being ambushed by enemies? Is it the total of all your party members' agility or something like that? It sure sucks to get ambushed by skeletons and have half the party paralyzed in a single turn.
