Kinda dumb question but here it goes: why should i invest in locks and traps when i can do it better with knock knock and divine trap? Is that a trade off that i'm not seeing?
You'll eventually need both for the best chests (L&T and Divine Trap). Low cost to develop L&T with a small initial investment. Rogues are good and Gadge can easily handle it as well.

I rarely use Knock Knock.

Gives a little more chance tumblers won't fall down while a single cast of knock knock will get me 4~5 tumblers open and locked in place.
It's more than a little, and chance doesn't matter what matters is whether you can get them open in a finite amount of time (or avoid traps with chests). Rogue can level up L&T entirely with just natural use (no grinding) and Gadge with a lvl or two to start. Shld only need Knock Knock/Knock Picks for retro dungeon locks and then combine Divine Trap and L&T skill for good chests at Barlones and Tree Armory, Mountain Wilderness etc...

Respawning happens every 24 hrs or so,
So, does resting in Wiz 8 influence the monster composition and respawning of a dungeon?

On my first attempt I rested twice in the lower Monastery, and evnentually faced many groups of Metallic Slimes, and one Emerald Slime, as well as huge packs (14) Seekers, and then a very large pack of Rabid Rats in the upper.
When I restarted (keeping my chad Lord instead of turning him into a virgin Priest), I haven't rested once, and things are going much smoother, with smaller and easier groups of enemies, and less respawning. And Arnika Road was a cakewalk. Only met one small group of Blood Vines.
As far as I know, respawning happens at select spots with a simple check. So your benign run through the "Road to Heaven" was the result of RNG. As is the "Road to Hell" when you enter at 6+ and the RNG decides to generate multiple crimson poppy spawns

Respawning happens every 24 hrs or so, so the less you rest the less respawns you have to deal with, and once you learn how to use Camouflage and combat run you should be able to get to Umpani or Arnika without fighting much at all if you want. Biggest thing is leaving Monastery at lvl 5 to avoid high level spawns on road then leveling immediately after for Crabs.

With two good frontliners in front box and decent flankers you should be able to handle fighting in a tight crevice against just about anything unless they catch you gassed.

Do you guys prefer to have 3 fighting classes for the first 3 slots, or only 2? I've been using 2 fighters and a priest, but the priest gets one-shot by rats pretty easily when just starting off, since he doesn't get any armor by default.
If you're using short range melee where else are they going to go? One reason to avoid short range melee outside of classes that want to train Shield/Stealth/Reflexion. Very early give your Mage some burn to help move early fights along. (Mage -> Bishop is one of the only good multiclass moves since it doesn't hurt caster level).

I like two in front row with Bard on one middle flank (mostly ranged but can get some melee practice in; Bard will eventually have good stats in everything (EDIT: stats from items don't actually help skill training evidently so this is wrong) so get a lot of natural skill-ups) and an Extended class with good armor or a defensive skill on the other. After a move RPCs always act first so they'll snipe melee chances from your own characters -> good idea to avoid short range melee only on your team (so give Fighter a Bow along with Sword and Board and use it/avoid cursed weapons). Myles on the other hand loves cursed weapons since he's so often acting first.

You clowns can facepalm all you want but I just finished another month of testing vanilla and discussing it with dudes who reverse engineered the code. I learned a lot and they learned a couple things too. It works on Expert.

Being thorough and picking your fights both gets you enough practice to develop your characters while avoiding fights that can wipe you. Using front box both protects squishies better and levels up defense skills so your can tank tough mobs later.

Any other ways of uncursing (ac)cursed items than Bishops (that I don't have) or the spell (which my chracters are too low lvl to cast)?
Doesn't seem to be any temple service for it, nor any potion you can use.

I guess with high enough Artifact skill you will be told if an item is curse or not?

And yet you feel the need to cheese the road to Arnika :neveraskedforthis:
Cheese? Waiting a couple minutes to level up the faster levelers until exiting the Monastery is hardly cheese. Hybrids and Elites haven't even hit six yet. And I don't even go to Arnika first anyway. If you exit at lvl six and get caught without a crevice even the best players could face a wipe depending on what shows up. I even had lvl eight Highwaymen spawn on me last time returning from Pipes chest and had to spam Poet's Lute/Stamina and focus them to death (since I messed up and didn't have Fumes/Freeze on Mage/Bish yet), was a close run thing, combat run was into a pack of high level bats as well.

The advice is mainly for people who have trouble there but no reason to press your luck when you'll have Gadgets/Instruments/and decent ammo soon so can handle whatever.

There should be scrolls sold at the temple in Arnika. It might be random whether they're in stock or not.

Purposefully keeping your characters at a lower level in order to manipulate the enemy spawn system is the textbook definition of cheese. And it's not necessary at all. Your example proves that you might face a game over if you run into a succession of the worst possible spawns at the worst possible time. So what? That's true anywhere.

a) Purposefully keeping your characters at a level appropriate for the spells, equipment, and items they have at their disposal and keeping faster leveling members of team even with slower ones until those things are available is...

not cheese

once you hit civilization north or south it's no longer an issue

b) I play tinman. No unnecessary reloads. Fighting overleveled mobs is (mostly) unnecessary.

c) People drop the game due to spawns at that specific stretch. It's still a challenge leaving at lvl 5 until you learn to pick your fights and sometimes even then.

If you agree with Mr. Strange that waiting to exit the tutorial area before leaving tutorial levels is cheese, then:

1) Have a caster with decent pts in Water, Air, and Earth for Freeze Flesh, Noxious Fumes, and Web and match to mob weakness - but don't be afraid to just let the nukes flow against foes too high level to beat resists (the debuffs help to hit, disables a lot + double damage). The main factors in mob resistance are spell level - third level spells harder to resist than first, caster level (hybrids get -4), and relative level of mobs to yours. The more overleveled they are the better nukes get but you get (much) more skill-ups using distract/debuff/disable to help your team hit stuff and avoid getting hit too hard. So try to fight mobs close to your level.

2) Train up a character (or several) with Throwing and Sling to use Bombs/Powders (Sneeze Powder is cheap, trains Throwing, and debuffs both attack and defense very early) you find, artifacts will rise naturally on characters with INT/SEN - don't sleep on Stix for those characters (autohit!)

3) Get STR/DEX and Weapon Skills up on frontliners and SEN/DEX plus Weapon Skills on ranged so you can hit and penetrate higher level mobs

Sadly if you've made the mistake of equipping an early game cursed item like a poison dagger, you're gonna be stuck with it for a while, if you don't have a bishop. I was also disappointed when I found out that temples don't offer an uncursing service.

Do the guards in arnika respawn? In Wizardry Expanded things can get really crazy with beasts attacking the town

Not often if you only rest enough to recover spell pts. Inventory gets new stock every 24 hrs so if you’re trying to get that mobs will respawn as well. Should be able to get guards to help you with fights.

So after months of very spurious playing, I've mapped out the first level of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord!
I'm so proud of myself, and yes, of course this is my 1st blind playthrough, and of course I am playing the apple ][ version :)

As far as I know, respawning happens at select spots with a simple check. So your benign run through the "Road to Heaven" was the result of RNG. As is the "Road to Hell" when you enter at 6+ and the RNG decides to generate multiple crimson poppy spawns.

How is that fake news Desiderius ?
It's a check every 24 in-game hours for each spawn point. Sometimes every point spawns, that's the reason for crowded levels.

You can control the 24-hr part (by not rest spamming), and usually manage aggro with Camouflage (Tincture of Shadows) + combat run if necessary. About the only time I couldn't do this was the initial escape from Monastery during my first stab at Expert vanilla in twenty years. The subsequent two were no problem. Poppies are pretty slow and not especially perceptive.

Anybody know how to improve the framerate in Wiz 8? I assumed with all the fan patches and everything any possible fix would already be applied, but I'm getting 5-10 fps on a modern gaming PC.

Have you tested all the different rendering options? If you're using nGlide try DirectX, or vice versa. Only thing I can think of.

Edit: It's possible that dgVoodoo's voodoo magic might work on this too. Could be worth a shot.
