Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
W6 controls are indeed ass, compared to the 2000+ year standard. But the game was developed in the late eighties, back when K&M was only starting to be a thing.

Blame D. W. Bradley for going insane after Wizards&Warriors but don't blame him for this.

I think the adoption of the mouse was one of the worst things that could've happened to CRPGs in the late 80s and early 90s. It led to Ultima 7 abandoning the text-insert keyword dialogue system of its predecessors, and everyone knows about Ultima 6's clunky interface which can also be blamed on the mouse. But I don't think even those games got hit as hard as Wizardry. When an EGA DOS game from 1990 is clunkier than a wireframe Apple II game from 1980, you know something terrible happened.

Diablo/Ultima Underworld got me mouse-addicted so I liked it but yeah once you take the time to master keyboard only its pretty smooth.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
But then the adoption of the mouse paid dividends when mouse-driven interfaces became great in the late 90s. There are always teething problems with any new technology. In any case, you can't blame the interface of Wiz 6 on the mouse, since there's no requirement to use it and it honestly feels like an afterthought. The keyboard controls could've remained the same as the previous games. It's just shit because it's shit.

The worst thing about the interface in Wiz6 is that ideally you'd use the mouse here and there for a couple of things that *might* be faster with it (casting spells mostly) and then the keyboard for the rest, but in their infinite wisdom, as soon as you enable mouse controls, the menu text highlighting disappears making the keyboard unusable. The especially stupid part is that the keyboard actually does still work, like if you blindly arrow around and hit enter, the correct options trigger. No reason whatsoever not to just let them both coexist.

But I finally switched my Bard back to Monk. It took ages to go from 99 to 100 in Music.

And of course, right after that Arfsie reported for duty, and I started finding phat lutes that require Bard 18.

And looking for the Rapax army, I stumbled upon a patch of mushrooms near the stone circle and was teleported to one of the (two?) retro dungeons (I guess my Senses wasn't high enough back when I planted the longsword in the stone). Found a nice amulet, but the rest of the loot didn't scale to my level.
Only tried one of the three doors in the first room, though, so I guess I will return when I've bought more ammo.

Yeah, Bard multiclass is mostly fake news. Need 4 lvls above minimum to reliably get the most out of instruments so I guess at lvl 22 could switch but that's late enough to be too late unless you've got a smaller party and then you lose the Bard exclusive equipment as well.

One other thing they found though is that the stat boosts on equipment *don't* help with training so they're not as good as they look anyway.

Well, in my case he started the game as an imported Monk, so he had a head start on the Monk skills. Not sure if he will ever be able to learn the Mindread spell, though.

The Gold Box games similarly struggled post Curse of the Azure Bonds.
Yes, it's funny that even control wise Secret of the Silver Blades is by far the worst of the quadrliogy, with many more key presses needed to do the same things. With Pools of Darkness the full keyboard control is fine again, it's different from POR and Curse but you need the same amount of presses.

Choices&Consequences, baby?

So if my party are good guys and want to secure the Umpani-T'Rang alliance against the Dark Savant, I have to sell my soul to the demon queen All-Sexus and become a Templar?
Or can I just exterminate the Rapax in holy righteousness and still secure the alliance?

Better bring some Mental nukes for that fight. Rodan and Drazic will go anywhere for rest of game with no Hex as long as you don't turn in their quest, but not so easy to spring them without becoming a Templar.

We mowed them down like they were consoletards.
Turned out that the walkthru I consulted was wrong; you don't have to join the Templars to secure the alliance.

I may have been a bit too overzealous in the Rapax extermination, though, since the resuced prisoners wanted to kill the Prince and the King. Already killed the King and released the Queen (and gave her back her Stud-Cuir Bra+2 that was lying in a tent). But the Prince gave a small speech and evaporated, leaving us to fight his harem.

So I guess all that is left now is to shoot down the Black Ship, make some rat an offer he can't refuse, finish business at Castle Rapax (get som custom items, kill the demoness, and find the portal) and then Ascend.

The menu-driven interface (likely motivated by either mouse support or joystick support) is decline from earlier Wizardry games which used the entire keyboard, and it's the biggest problem with the game.
huh, Wiz6 interface is superior to earlier Wizardries

I disagree. In Wiz1 you just press "S" and type in a spell name. In Wiz6 you have to scroll through a sub-menu. Things that could easily have been improved, like how awkward it is to trade items between characters, or equipping characters, were not improved in Wiz6, despite releasing 10 years later.

Which walkthrough are you using?

When I googled, the first detailed one that came up was Zimlab:
The Umpani-T'Rang Alliance procedure requires the following:
[...]
3) You must become a Templar prior to entering the Wilderness Clearing (Rapax Away Camp)

This is definitely false.
It does make it a hell of a lot easier though. If you're a templar you can plant a teleport point right next to the portal to Arnika inside the castle, walk up to the prisoners inside the camp, free em both and teleport to safety and ultimately into Arnika, from which you can very easily reach the Umpani and Trang teleport shacks. You don't need to kill the king btw., that part is cut content and in fact optional.

They probably second-guessed themselves due to the number of options. In Wiz1 combat for example you had what, just Fight, Parry, Spell, Run, and sometimes Dispell? In Wiz6 you also have Use, Equip, Move, sometimes Hide and/or Breathe, and in general most of the options have sub-menus afterwards. They probably figured assigning a hotkey to every single one of these would be a nightmare and confuse the hell out of people. In reality it would probably have made for a steeper learning curve, but a much smoother experience once you get past it.

Not joining the Rapax Templars right away was a big mistake. Firstly you have to do it anyway, secondly I got so bloody tired of this game when exploring Castle Rapax and my party was overleveled in the end, so the last part became a bit of a chore.

Despite being far from an optimized party (no Fighter or Rogue) I only had to rest twice and reload thrice. The last reload was against Stealer of Souls (or whatever) who managed to turncoat half my party despite Soul Shield and was accompanied by both Imps and Demons. When I reloaded and faced him alone he was of course paralyzed by one of the first hits I landed on him.

I'd say Wiz8 is in many ways (combat, exploration, itemization) the best of the Wizardry games, but it's also the most annoying one; in the end I couldn't use ear phones due to the increasingly annoying swishing sound every time the mouse cursor swept over something clickable, and the peculiarities of distance and timing in combat was a source of loud swearing. Also the railroading in the last part.
A really good game leaves you craving for more. Oh well, maybe if I had joined the Templars ASAP...

Despite the endless respawning my characters had much fewer kills in Wiz8 than in Wiz7. I compared the numbers and the totals kills are:
Wiz 6: 2193
Wiz 7: 7267
Wiz 8: 2713
Total: 12173

The numbers kind of confirm my prejudice against Wiz 7.
Incidentally my character with most kill was Pu-Zen who started as a Psionic (I think) and spent most of his career as a Monk, except for the first 2/3 of Wiz 8 when he had to do Bard duty.

Did you also get this very funny bug where your party is lifted up in the air and then slams back down again during the ending narration?

But did you also run at an enemy too fast and bounce right the fuck off him like a tennis ball?
