I am curious as to what would have happened if Sir tech was alive and was releasing a Xth Wizardry game on 3D engines of today.
I bet it would have been more successful than Skyrim considering that Wizardry offers a greater sense of adventure and more fullfuling sense of becoming whoever you want in the true roleplaying point of view.

It depends what Lead of the old Sir Tech would get you may have gotten:
  • Robert Woodhead was into Anime and has apparently had two successful kickstarters including one creating the Bubblegum Crisis (90s anime for those that don't remember) Blue Ray Set - I think if he was still at the helm you would get more anime versions of Wizardry than that of the ASCII / Starfish versions of Wizardry, and extending on what he has done since you would think that he would probably do a kickstarter to fund them. He also likes robots so maybe we would got Wizardry Gundam?
  • If we look at DW Bradley, he has publicly stated that he really likes the idea of gatcha mobile gaming (I think he said he loves the idea of the Candy Crush game?) and I think anything that would come from him these days would be on that platform. He has also stated that he would want to do stuff in VR, and given that he was the one that introduced Felpurr, Mooks and Rawulfs to Wizardry we all know where this would end up....
  • Andrew Greenberg is into Law (Patents) and Renewable Energy these days so all you are like to get from him is a breach notice...he is basically just Werdna in real life.
  • No one cares what Brenda would have done.

I'd like to imagine Studio Crackerjack could have saved the blobber but I think it just ran its natural course. No matter how many hipsters gush about vinyl, turn tables aren't coming back en mass. The upside is CDs will probably never return at all. Some designs are timeless and some are just technical compromises of their era. Linear corridor shooters are probably gone for good, MMOs of the WoW variety are pretty much dead, point and click adventure is enjoying a moderate renaissance, and turn-based is officially back. AAA studios have largely stopped trying to make trad RPGs, its all 'looter shooters' and 'rpg elements' now, leaving the market for the indies--classic disruption potential there ("crappy products for crappy customers.")

Linear corridor shooters are probably gone for good

Doom 2016 was a success even though many of its levels are traditional claustrophobic shooting galleries. Alien Isolation was a critical success and sold reasonably well. ION Fury was successful enough to warrant a sequel.

Two boomer shooters and a survival horror are not linear corridor shooters. Ion Fury is a build engine game, the total opposite of 'run down a corridor with regenerating health and popamole shooting.'

You mentioned technical limitations followed by "linear corridor shooters", which suggests that you were referring to old shooter engines not being able to render open world environments.

Some designs are timeless and some are just technical compromises of their era. Linear corridor shooters are probably gone for good

If you want to blame someone for the entire presence of anime in the west then it's Woodhead. He's more than a "classic weeb" or someone who is "into anime". He was THE guy who pushed for anime in America at the very least. Other parts of the world had a much more friendly relationship with anime but when it comes to the States, he's he guy who made the whole scene.

Also I hope his wife is an open minded, westernized japanese because in Japan, when a man takes the wife's name, it's a sign that he's using her to go up in the social ladder.

Are you playing completely spoiler free?
I'm on the Cosmic Cube. I've been playing mostly spoiler free, but I have peeked at Crooked Bee's LP a few times and so I already went to hell to get the holy hand grenade. I'm glad, too, because I never would have thought to try and blow up a wall in a Wizardry game. I haven't resorted to looking at maps yet, though, so right now I'm just navigating by the clusterfuck of a map I've made myself.

Judging from all the empty space still left, I'm not even close to done. I'm also almost certain that there's something hidden in the giant spinner room but you can't even use Dumapic in there without getting disoriented. It's bullshit how you can use the flying boots to fly over mines and pits but not spinning tiles. I HATE spinners or turntables, they're the worst fucking obstacle to ever blemish any game.

I didn't like Wizardry 6 very much when I first played it; it looked ugly, the interface was clunky, I didn't like how you could accidentally wander into rooms with bosses 10 times stronger than you without warning, there's some bullshit like how using keys is never explained in the game or in the manual, etc. But after 5 wireframe Wizardry games in a row, when I get back to Wiz6 it's going to be like embracing a long lost love. "Finally, there's graphics! And I can save my game! This is the future!"

I can't even imagine how good Wizardry 7 is going to look by comparison. Lots of people say Wizardry 7 is the best RPG ever, and I bet most of those people have never played the previous games, let alone trudged through the hell of Wiz4, so Wiz7 is going to look even better for me just because of how I'm going to be comparing it to the previous games. Looking forward to it is what's keeping me going, even as my motivation to play through the series dwindles to the point where I can only bring myself to play Wiz4 for like 10 minutes at a time.
