I've never played a Thief game before.

Then do it. Srsly.

Ok. I'll go play Thief 1 from GoG. Thief Gold, right?

Is there Dark Project to choose from as well?

Thief Gold has three additional levels. It also introduces new things to the existing game like enemies such as Fire Shadows and mages and slightly revamped levels (Bonehoard and Lost City) and not exactly for the better. Shoehorned, if you ask me.

Basically: Tried to fix things that weren't broken. Like I said and explained above, I prefer the DP version. It's imo more consistent and well-paced.

I'd say play the Dark Project and Thief Gold, or at least those additional levels, to see the differences and form an opinion for yourself.

I think you can restore those revamped missions to their original state with some mods or console commands if you don't want to buy the same game twice.

For a newbie I would definitely not advise playing the game twice off the bat to explore the nuance. Gold is fine, and generally the preferred version for the average player.

A few tips, too:

- Play the game on Expert. I think everyone will tell you that. It's how that game is supposed to be played, comprehensively.

- Guards are much more sensitive to sounds you make than to not being fully shrouded in shadows. Your main enemy, probably even worse than light, will be marble & metal floors. You can never be completely silent in your footsteps, but the speed of your movement determines the radius of your sound cue. You can tap the Move Forward to decrease it and there's an additional Creep button that will be helpful as well.

- Get unofficial patches. It basically removes the problem of dated graphics and fixes stuff further.

- Old games liked secrets. Pay attention to your surroundings to notice unusual things. Try to get everywhere, the loot can be in the unlikeliest of places. Look around for hidden passages, objects like fake walls to interact with etc. Vertical movement is introduced with rope arrows. Some tapestries can be cut down with your sword to reveal secret stuff. Thief 2 has even more of those with a separate statistic.

After that get The Metal Age as well. It's a great game too, even if some prefer the original take on the lore. Lore-wise Deadly Shadows is a decent Thief game and wraps things up if you can stomach the handicapped gameplay.

People who say that Thief 1 is better than Thief Gold are retarded posers who probably haven't even played any.

Yes a game that lacks 3 new maps and alternative paths in original ones (yes some maps had only one possibly way through in some areas and LGS bothered to improve that) is totally better cuz it's from 98 and Gold is from 99 that means it's newfag shit!

Meanwhile in Eidos Montreal:
'Alternative paths? Retards Players will get lost on our maps, let's make some unpickable locks and to add some hours to the length of the game.'

The improved (IMO) level design in TMA and 'optimized-for-Xbox-memory' levels in DS are also worth mentioning.
Also, DS gameplay and level design are quite comparable to Deus Ex (Thief 1-2, usage of PC resources) vs Invisible War (TDS, limits of Xbox hardware). Just keep that in mind and you will be fine.

The wisdom lies in your words. It is the same game, just improved at some places and with 3 more levels.
Comparing them would be a waste of time and a total faggotry. At least your skill would be a bit more polished and your dad would be proud that you took the hard way instead of reading the manual.

They haven't actually confirmed the removal. They said they'll talk more about that later.

Edit:

Strategy Informer: Okay, most important question last: can we expect to hear the word “taffer” in the game?

Stephane Roy: Again that’s another one for the narrative director [Steven Gallagher]. I think he wants to bring it back but hasn’t worked out yet exactly how. I know that it’s part of the DNA of the franchise, and that you’re not the first one to ask this question! People are just in love with that word, and I’m surprised to see after all these years that it’s still in people’s minds! So no doubt we’re going to have it, but how exactly honestly keep your question in mind for a later date.

That interview. There's no reason to ghost (except maybe achievements), no story branching, et cetera. So the new Thief game is literally less about classic Thief gameplay than Dishonored was. What a wondrous modern gaming renaissance we live in!

When will they stop this DNA bullshit? Are these guys geneticists?

They removed taffer? great. Now they should remove the title thief, remove garrett, and then we will not have to worry no more.

Serpent in the Staglands Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Shadorwun: Hong Kong
When he says DNA he clearly means the core competencies of the franchise vis-a-vis it's audience satisfaction index. They have to synergize that with modern sophistication to increase market penetration.

Hm...I will, once I'm done replaying System Shock 2.
