Sometimes I wonder how it is that RPGs (especially crowdfunded and/or indie ones) are still getting made at all.

When even on an enthusast forum like this, the people interested enough to follow the game's thread end up writing stuff like "they didn't say what I wanted to hear", "I'll buy this at 50% off", "I'm tempted to back this game", where do their backers come from?
Guess we owe one to the non-monocled crowd out there that just pops into their wallet and puts some money down instead of engaging in a lenghy analysis coming to the foregone conclusion "ALMOST a game I'd back". :P

The brainoid is obviously their version of the intellect devourer from 1st edition AD&D (minus 2 legs) :

Unknown Realm June Update - Monsters, Megafounder and Music Preview!

Hello Everyone!

It’s been busy over here in the land of Stirring Dragon Games. We’re ready to share another update, complete with a sneak preview of some music for Unknown Realm by Chris Huelsbeck!

In-Game Backer Content
We're ramping up production on some of the in-game content rewards. We’ve sent out surveys for backers who have basic NPC portraits and we’re impressed with the photos we’ve received from them so far. You guys are going to make some great characters in the game! Plus it's really fun for us to put faces with names for at least some of our backers. :)

We decided to offer our NPC portrait backers some extra customization options besides just creating a portrait in their likeness. Now they also get to participate a little more in the design process by selecting from a list of possible occupation choices and suggesting a name for their NPC. In case you are curious, here is the list of possible occupations for our NPC portrait backers...

Surveys for those of you with mountains and tombstones will be sent out later this month, followed by surveys for backers with more detailed in-game content (mercenaries, tavern owners, etc) later this summer.

Megafounder – the Final Push
In the last update we mentioned we’d be closing down our Megafounder campaign at the end of May. After giving it some thought, we’ve decided to do one final push before we close it down, so in a couple weeks we plan on promoting our Megafounder campaign by opening up a few new in-game content rewards plus some cool add-on options for existing backers (including additional NPC portraits)! We haven’t been actively campaigning/crowdfunding since the end of January, and we feel it's worth one final push to try and reach those higher stretch goals.

For our pen and ink bestiary, Bruce and Raf are working hard to bring back that old school monster manual feel. Some of you guys may know exactly what we’re talking about. ;-) Our goal is to create a bestiary that strikes the right balance between familiar monsters we all know and love and new monsters you haven't seen before. Here are a few more monster illustrations you will find in the bestiary...

Music Sneak Preview!

Saving the best for last - we wanted to share with you a special sneak preview of some of the all-new music being created by Chris Huelsbeck for Unknown Realm!

Below are two chiptune samples: the first is a sample of the music that plays during the 80’s intro cutscene sequence, and the second is an in-game sailing tune. (The usual disclaimer applies: these are works in progress and not necessarily final.)

New Turrican Kickstarter + New Amiga/C64 Music!!
Chris is currently in the final days of his latest Kickstarter campaign Turrican – Orchestral Selections + New Amiga Album. This project will feature brand new arrangements from some of the music from Turrican 1, 2 and 3, as well as a new album of all-new Amiga music from Chris! The new album will also include a special C64 version of one of those new tracks! These are very exciting times for fans of C64 and Amiga music, and fans of Chris Huelsbeck. We’re are proud to support his latest project and honored to work with a musician who has such a terrific legacy. Please take a minute to check out Chris’s campaign and support him if you can!

New in-game content items on Megafounder now!

Hello backers!

Just a quick crowdfunding update... we mentioned we would be posting some new in-game add-ons for you on Megafounder before we wind down that campaign. We plan on closing down the Megafounder campaign on July 24, at which time we’ll finalize our numbers for production and manufacturing.

Unknown Realm August Update

Hello Everyone!

No summer vacation around here at Stirring Dragon Games – we’ve been hard at work on Unknown Realm almost 24/7 and it's time for us to share another quick update! Below are a few highlights from just some of the things we’ve been working on…

Since we stopped crowdfunding through Megafounder our inbox has been hit with a steady stream of requests for the Collector's Editions:

Even though it’s a bummer that some people didn’t hear about this campaign until it was over, we’re always excited to get emails like “I grew up with games like this...Is there any way I can still get the Collector’s Edition?” In case you didn't know, we do have a wait list for both PC & C64 Collector's Editions. If we have any leftover Collector’s Editions once the game has been shipped (from extras manufactured to cover damage or loss during shipping), we’ll make those available to our wait list. In-Game Content

We are still in the process of creating in-game backer content and fitting it into the game. We have one more batch of surveys that will go out in the beginning of September. These will be the in-game content "heavy hitters" such as mercenaries, tavern owners, barflies, etc.

Tombstones, Mountains and many of the NPC portraits are already being added into the game. It turns out, between all the various NPC backers, we have a LOT of custom NPC portraits to pixel, so the Stirring Dragon pixel fairies are hard at work. ;-)

Art

The art for our old school, pen & ink Bestiary is almost done (yay!) and we’ll be finalizing the layout and taking it to the offset printer for some preliminary tests in September. Here are a few of the latest dungeon monsters you will face in Unknown Realm. The cave trolls are particularly nasty, they love to set traps for unsuspecting adventurers.

Business

Behind the scenes, there are a lot of administrative details being sorted out regarding logistics, shipping and fulfillment plans. Even though we did a lot of research beforehand, there have been some surprises. Now that we have our final backer numbers, we’ve realized that about 60% of our physical backers are outside the United States, and only 40% here…not at all what we expected. When we were planning for Kickstarter, we estimated we’d get about 70% US backers and 30% elsewhere for this type of game.

Music

Here is another sneak preview of some of the all-new music being created by Chris Huelsbeck for Unknown Realm! This is a sample of one of the overworld wandering tunes that will be in the game. It’s so cool for us to hear Chris bring this world to life with his music. Enjoy!

Unknown Realm November Update

Greetings from the Stirring Dragon Lair!

It’s been awhile since our last update and we know at least some of you have been craving an update about Unknown Realm! We had hoped to post this sooner, but there were a number of details that we needed to finalize before sharing some of the news items in this update. It’s been an interesting few months with a lot of ups and downs. We’re pretty much in full crunch mode around here, so if you don’t see us, it’s only because we’re focusing our efforts where they're most productive to making this game a reality.

State of the Realm
Production on the game has been going strong. Here are some highlights about our progress and some of the challenges we’ve been facing as we work to bring you Unknown Realm.

Music news

Music development for Unknown Realm has its own set of unique challenges, partly because nothing quite like this hybrid in-game soundtrack has been done before. For every track in the game, we have to have multiple arrangements of each song to accommodate the PC and C64 versions of the game as well as the final soundtrack version. Working with outside contractors adds a new layer of complications including tool support, documentation and communication that takes a lot of extra time. The development on the music has been slower than we planned, but we’re making good progress. One member of the Unknown Realm backer community has stepped up in a big way by writing a tool to streamline the music conversion process. This was a huge help! It’s so cool to have the support of backers who are passionate about the project and want to be part of the effort to bring this game to life.

And here’s some really great news: Despite the fact that we did not quite make our soundtrack stretch goal during our campaign, we’re excited to tell you that Chris Huelsbeck has agreed to do the full soundtrack for Unknown Realm! We’re working with Chris to make a one-of-a-kind soundtrack that will be a treat for both Chris Huelsbeck and RPG fans alike. This sound track will feature 8-bit chiptune versions of songs found in the game, as well as their modern arrangements.

Backer Content

Over the last few months, we’ve been chasing down all of our in-game content from backers. After many reminder emails, we’re still waiting on some backers…If you pledged for a reward that includes in-game content like a mercenary NPC or Tombstone and have not replied to your survey yet, pretty please, check your email and look for the survey from Stirring Dragon Games. Even though it's a little extra work on our end, it’s been a lot of fun to have backers participate in creating in-game content, especially for NPCs in the game. We love hearing the ideas our backers come up with and we're taking a lot of care to fit these ideas into the game world in a way that is respectful of the story and hopefully exciting for players to discover.

Bestiary Art

Our pen & ink artist had a lot going on this summer but he’s back to work now creating the last few illustrations for the 64 (yes, 64!) monsters that will be in the game. It’s been two and a half years since we started creating this bestiary with him and we’re excited to see this part of the project near completion.

Speaking of bestiary illustrations, here is one of our backer-designed monsters, called a Tigoth, which was designed as part of the “Create-a-Monster” reward on Megafounder. The Tigoth is a large, nocturnal, saber-toothed cat with a long, whip-like tail ending in a sharp blade of hardened bone.

Frontend Sneak Peek

No respectable RPG should be without a nice frontend presentation and an authentically 8-bit RPG like Unknown Realm is no exception. Every element of this game, from our feelies to our user-interfaces has been carefully designed to keep your imagination immersed in the game from the moment you start it up. From the beginning we put a significant effort into designing a fun, interactive, and most importantly, immersive frontend filled with various things for you to explore. It's chalk full of so much content and music that you may get lost in it for hours. ;)

Here is a sneak peek of one of the features you will find in our frontend, the "Pixel-Ink" in-game bestiary that mirrors the beautifully illustrated pen & ink art of our physical bestiary book...

Game Production Status

At this point, we still have some outstanding assets that need to be created and integrated into the game including music and some portraits. If all goes well, we'll be on track for the game to hit an Alpha state in December. We are looking into finding one additional pixel artist to help out. If you are a pixel artist and interested in working with us, please contact us via email.

There are a lot of other details we want to share with you about this journey, but in the interest of saving time, we’re reserving a lot of those for the Making-Of book. Rest assured, the book will have a healthy dose of behind the scenes drama – everything from technical challenges, dealing with troublemakers, lessons learned the hard way, unexpected life issues and of course, the hazards of going into business with your spouse. ;-)

The Road Ahead
By this point, you have probably figured out that our release plans need to change somewhat from our initial estimated delivery dates and schedule. What we originally hoped to do was release the physical and digital editions concurrently. However, because of the nature of the project and the exhaustive testing required to ensure a bug-free game on cartridge, we're shifting our focus slightly in favor of a conventional digital-first release. This will not be an early access/beta release. Testing of the cartridge version will be going on concurrently with the digital release. Since we cannot patch or re-flash the cartridge once it's shipped, the digital release will give us one last opportunity to weed out any missed bugs or potential balance issues before we finalize the cartridge ROM. It's an extra precaution we feel we need to take to get this project right.

Our current plan is to release the game digitally in Spring 2018 and we anticipate shipping out physical rewards a few months after that. We considered trying to ship PC physical rewards separately to align with the digital release, but due to the high number of rewards shipping internationally, the freight costs for shipping C64 and PC separately would not be feasible for our budget. This was a really hard choice for us to make because it's not in line with what we originally wanted for this game, but sometimes compromises are necessary to make the product better.

As frustrating as it is to miss our original estimates, it would be so much worse to release a game that wasn’t ready to live up to the experience we’ve promised you. The important thing is that we will continue to put everything we have into developing this game and making it the game we all want to play.

That said, adjusting our schedule isn't all bad, we are taking advantage of the extra time to make your rewards even better than we originally planned. Which brings us to...

Old School RPGs Need Epic Traditional Art
We searched high and low to find an artist who could bring the Unknown Realm cover art to life in a manner worthy of its old school roots and now we’re thrilled to announce we are working with one of the best traditional fantasy art painters around to make this happen! Ted Nasmith is a world-renowned illustrator and traditional artist who has created illustrations for projects associated with The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones.

We are so excited to have him paint the Unknown Realm cover art for you guys because his unique style and dedication to the craft of traditional art are perfectly suited to bringing back all of those old school RPG feelings. This cover art will be used across all our digital formats and appear on the physical editions of Unknown Realm. Every backer ($19+) will be receiving a digital wallpaper version of the cover art and we’ll have posters available in the future as well.

Final Thoughts

Bringing back the authentic 8-bit RPG experience takes time, persistence and a lot of optimism in the face of tough odds. It wouldn’t be possible without you and we’re eternally grateful to each of our backers for your support, encouragement, understanding, and patience too!

Hey everyone! We’re still alive and working hard on your game. Here's a short update:

We’re working on several key things at the moment including getting ready for GDC next month, and preparing to launch on Steam this spring. There’s only two of us doing a TON of work so realistically, we don’t expect to post another update until after GDC in March – but as always, if you don’t hear from us, it’s only because we’re hard at work and don’t want to take time away from development to write updates.

Curve Ball

We’ve been dealing with a bit of a housing crisis the last few months. The “reader’s digest” version of the story is that our landlords told us they were going to sell the house we’ve been living in for the last 5 years. We had an almost impossible time finding a new place to live due to not having any outside source of income. Surprisingly enough, no one wants to rent to a husband and wife indie game startup with zero revenue streams. For a while we were legitimately worried we’d end up on the street with our kids and our C64s. We did manage to find a temporary solution, but it came with a lot of downsides. Miraculously, just one week before we were supposed to move out, our landlords changed their minds and our housing situation has reverted back to being at least relatively stable for another year (…we hope).

This latest development happened about a week ago, so we’re still recovering. It’s a HUGE relief after a couple months of excruciating stress that definitely slowed down our development, as we had to divert some of our attention to packing up our house and figuring out what we were going to do. Now Laura is slowly unpacking the house and Bruce is excited to be able to focus all his attention on the game again. One thing we learned at GDC is that we are not the only indie devs to find themselves in such a vulnerable position while trying to get their game to market—which is both scary and comforting at the same time.

Obviously, challenges like this mean that we are no longer on track for the Spring release we had hoped for. We know you are all anxiously awaiting our game, but rest assured we are doing the best we can with the resources we have available to us. We still feel pretty confident about releasing the game this year. Beyond that, we will not be announcing any hard release date for Unknown Realm until it’s ready to launch on Steam.

Future Updates

Lets talk a little about updates because we’ve been getting some feedback about how often we choose to update on this project. Early on (during the campaign), we updated frequently, partly because we wanted to show our backers what they could expect from the game, and partly because we were literally doing nothing but working on crowdfunding. After that we assumed we would be doing an update around once a month, but sometimes as development progresses you have to reassess what’s the best use of your time and resources as a very small team.

We know other projects may handle updates differently, but we never intended to use our Kickstarter updates as a development blog. For those that are interested in the more detailed stuff, there will be plenty of the “sausage making” aspect of this game in our making-of book. At this stage of development, we prefer to keep updates limited to significant news and announcements about the game, not incremental status reports. Please don’t assume that a lack of frequent updates means we’re not working on the game. We’ve backed over 50 projects ourselves, so we realize with some projects a pattern of less frequent updates may be perceived as a red flag, but we hope all of you will be understanding with us when we say: we’re committed to seeing this project through to the end. In between updates, we do try to pop into the main comments to reassure people we are still here and working on the game and we are also very responsive when people contact us directly by email.

Given the amount of time, money, and sacrifice we have poured into this game over the last five years, we are well past the point of giving up on this project for any reason other than serious illness or death…and if either of those things happens before we ship, we promise we will post an update. ;-) Otherwise, the next major update you guys should expect to see from us should be that our Steam Store page is live and you can add the game to your Wishlist.

Quick Update: Megafounder + Royal Museum Art Submissions

Hello Backers!

Hope you’re all enjoying your summer so far! We just wanted to post a quick update about a few pressing matters...

What Happened to Megafounder??

As most of you are aware, after our KS campaign ended, we opted to continue a limited campaign for those who couldn’t back on Kickstarter (Paypal and non-credit card users, etc) using the crowdfunding platform, Megafounder. It appears that Megafounder is no longer in business. We cannot say for sure what is going on, only that the Megafounder website has been non-operational for several months and repeated attempts to reach the support team at MF have been unsuccessful. This means that we no longer have a way to update Megafounder backers.

Our solution is to set up an email list for Megafounder backers so we can mirror private Kickstarter updates to MF backers as well. Megafounder backers, you will be getting an email update from us soon that will include our last private update from last month – it will be sent out through Mailchimp, so check your spam folder if you don’t see it in the next few days. If you backed the project on Megafounder and need to update the email address you used on Megafounder (since we have no other way to reach you!), please send us an email (hello@stirringdragon.games).

The good news is, we downloaded all of our backer data before the website went down, so there’s no need to worry – we still have record of all your pledges, rewards, etc if you backed the project on Megafounder.

The Royal Museum (still) Wants 8-Bit Artists

As we discussed in our last update, we’re accepting art submissions to be featured in the in-game Royal Museum. In Unknown Realm, the Royal Museum in the game will feature pixel paintings that can be examined up close. We thought it would be fun to fill these areas with some art from the Unknown Realm community.

We have already received some really great submissions from our backers, here are just two examples...

In our last update, we wanted to give backers a chance to submit artwork first, but now we’d like to give other artists a chance to have their 8-bit art in the game, including non-backers! We’ll continue to accept artwork submissions through July 20th so if you’ve been thinking about doing it, now’s the time!

To help you on your quest to create your very own pixel art masterpiece, here are a few tools, including a web-based one that was created by one of our backers with a specific pixel dimension template (176x112) for a museum art piece.

Below is a quick example of a straight conversion of a photograph (taken by another one of our backers) to the C64 hi-res format using this tool. Importing an image using one of these pixel programs is a great way to get a jump start on your C64 hi-res piece. Then you can touch it up and add details as needed.

For Windows PC users, there’s Pixcen.

You can also use Multipaint that supports most platforms. (Windows, MacOS, Linux)

Files should be submitted in .png format and must be 176x112 pixels (without frame) done in C64 hi-res color mode. If you are interested in having your artwork featured in the game, please send your submissions (including a suggested title) to (museum@stirringdragon.games). And as we said before, by submitting art to us, you agree to its use by Stirring Dragon Games for any and all purposes. Submitting art does not guarantee it will be used in the game.

Holiday Greetings, Unknown Realm fans!

Last year we made physical cards and mailed them out to a few of our backers, but this year we wanted to make a little something that everyone could enjoy this holiday season while you wait for us to finish Unknown Realm. We took a cue from a few of our favorite 80’s game companies like Sierra Online and Commodore and decided to resurrect an old school game industry tradition: the digital Christmas card.

Without further ado, here is a small gift we whipped up (with the help of two of our awesome backers) to thank you for your support over the last year. We hope this taste of 8-bit Christmas cheer brings back happy memories of simpler times with your favorite games.

Happy New Year backers!

We're happy to announce a long overdue update to our website, formerly just a landing page. While we had hoped it would be done much sooner, it was a lower priority than the other game dev tasks we've been working on, so we could only devote small amounts of time to it here and there.

Like most Kickstarter creators, at some point we will be moving our updates away from Kickstarter (after release) and we'll use our website for that purpose. We don’t have a lot of content posted yet, but our site will serve as a hub for information about Unknown Realm and other SDG news, as well as occasional reflections on indie dev from the Stirring Dragon team.
