Bugs aside, will it ever be fun to play?
I didn't got that impression from everything I've seen to far. For example the new warfare mechanics.

Where do you place bets for how long it will take to reach playable state?

I'm putting my money on half a year to playability.
Judging it by CKIII standards? Two years
Nah, that was lacking content early on.
But playable? That "only" took the inital half year of patching

I fully expect Vicky 3 to be similar in this regard.

We'll see how this will turn out but I am okay with any outcome because:
1. There were precedents of Paradox overhauling some fundamental echanics of their games (like pops for Stellaris)
2. Currently there are FUCKING NO ALTERNATIVES FOR VICTORIAN AGE GRABD STRATEGIES FUCKING ZERO НОЛЬ CERO NULO صفر NUL ゼロ NOLL
HUMANITY FUCKING DESERVE PARADOX'S CANCEROUS DLC STRATEGY AND OTHER SHIT BECAUSE WE HAD THREE DECADES AND NOT A SINGLE VICTORIAN GRAND STRATEGY GAME OTHER THAN VICTORIA
I want to vomit.

Only release that I'm somewhat excited for tbh (except for the Rogue Trader RPG, but who knows when that'll release).

First campaign will prolly be turning Japan into a major naval power and conquering maritime SEA while otherwise focusing on economic goals. Kinda vanilla, but it's comfy not having to worry about defending ground borders.

Instead of flat map, the game should use a victorian era globus encased in a mahogany wood frame. It would be so cool and remove the problems with mercator projection or whatever they use.

My first campaign will be an effort to industrialize Russia. I love the economic development theme in games.

Tragically, it’s still very tempting to get this. Nobody else is really making grand strategy games, and certainly not of this era. Paradox make such garbage now, but maybe this can be stitched up a bit with modding? I had to add in freaking nighttime lights and cities to Colombia in HOI4, but it was easy. But then, CK3 can’t be fixed with any amount of modding. Has anyone really followed the dev diaries?

I like how the map looks. It has very board-gamey feel.

Yes, if only that was the primary map rather than the terrible 3D plasticine monstrosity you get when you zoom in. There were mods for CK2/EU4 that overlayed a paper map on top of the 3D topography, I don’t know why that wasn’t done with CK3 which also has a really nice paper map when you zoom out.

Grey Eminence? Obviously not gonna be released before Vicky 3 but it is in the same era.

So far every recent Paradox game has been a disappointment. Imperator: Dead on Arrival, HoI4: Memetic Warfare, CK3: Bland Mess... I'm not getting my hopes up

10 years, but by that time Pdox will be out of business due to the shady practices and treatment of customers.
Don't forget about their treatment of their own employees. Those Glassdoor reviews lol. No wonder the only coders they can get are some desperate interns with no experience who work for a bag of soy beans.

Imperator is a failure, yes.

But HoI4 is pretty good, at least with the right mods. Vanilla is fairly bland.
If you expect Slitherine levels of depth/realism, you won't get that, obviously. But then I'd say you are looking in the wrong place to begin with.
They do not really seem to understand their own mechanics, though, so DLCs tend to break as much as they improve.
So... overall, meh that can be made fun with mods?

CK3 succeeded in its goal to create a Medieval Sims Dynasty LARP sandbox.
Fails as an empire building game with economy and military, of course, but I don't think that was ever really their goal.

HoI4 still cannot hope to compare with Darkest Hour. It's full of retarded meme-y shit targeted at redditors, and has mechanics that actively disincentivize you from actually controlling your divisions (in a wargame!). That mods can fix it into something playable doesn't really mean the game itself isn't garbage.
