Bottom left is the flag used by the February 26 1936 coup attempt, reading "Revere the Emperor, Destroy the Traitors" (尊皇討奸).Btw, a question for our resident weaboos (+/- historically literate individuals like Delterius & FreeKaner): what does each of the flags below represent?
If I understood it correctly, the flag on the top right is the Shogunate flag (Tokugawa flag with the red sun superimposed upon it) and the one on the bottom right is the imperial flag (imperial seal on a red background); but what about the other two? Liberal and council republic respectively? And does anyone have a clue about what the characters on the bottom left flag mean?
According to Flags of the World, the lower-right flag is an actual flag used specifically for the Emperor. The upper-right was actually used as a civil ensign briefly in the 1870s, but its use here is probably based on a naval ensign used by the Tokugawa briefly before the downfall of the Shogunate but with the red sun superimposed over the actual design, which was simply three horizontal white/black/white stripes. The upper-left flag was a naval ensign used for vice-admirals specifically in the late-19th century.
