reads like an amateur novel.
Great, because it is an amateur novel.
TakaJun's translation is rough
citation needed
Have you ever read the original Fate/Stay Night? Nasu is actually quite good at weaving prose and makes tons of puns. The puns are essentially untranslatable, sadly, but F/SN flows beautifully and that could easily be rendered in English. Sadly, TakaJun is (was?) not a good writer. He's also overly literal at points, translating things with no regard for context.

That's not to say that his translation of F/SN is wrong, but it definitely makes the text much less beautiful and more amateurish than it actually is.

Kinoko Nasu is far from being my favorite writer but damn he has some wonderful prose. Tsukihime Remake is a joy to read and Mahoyo is like legit novel territory. It's very unfortunate to see how his reputation in the West as a writer is basically nonexistent due to some exceptionally poor choices made by MirrorMoon.
For what it's worth, Nasu was published in a literary magazine when he only had Kara no Kyoukai, Tsukihime, and FSN behind his back. That same magazine published plenty of other VN writers like Ryukishi, but also had tons of legit writers both involved and published, like the mystery writer Natsuhiko Kyougoku and many recipients of the literary Mephisto award. Nasu's Reality Marble is just too strong.

Suda's Moonlight Syndrome is currently being fan translated.

EDIT: Supposedly it's already done, but just not out yet.

Fate Stay/Night is finally out on Steam.
If you still want to give Nasu your money (that he clearly does not need) for a game that's about to hit legal drinking age, you might want to wait a bit. The wonderful people working on the game misplaced some ones and zeroes and now random sprites show up in scenes where they clearly shouldn't be (like late HF Sakura Matou showing up at the start). At least they're patching it though: the Switch version is confirmed to be fixed, while Steam peons get a message they rushed out literally a few minutes ago that says "we know stuff is wrong, we're fixing it".
Some people on the game hub are reporting that changing locale to Japanese fixes the bug, but you really shouldn't have to be doing this in 2024 unless you're running software meant for the Japanese region.

Nasu hates westerners so much he purposely fucked the game's release to troll foreigners.
Well, maybe it's really expensive, but at least nothing was actually remastered and the game doesn't work.

I couldn't recommend Utawarerumono enough

Seconded. The story is very uneven (first game peaks with the first arc and then the invasion arc, rest is meh), second game's story doesn't become engaging until the last few hours, the beginning of the third game is very engaging and then the last act is infuriating), and the gameplay is serviceable at best, but the characters are pleasant, there are funny moments, it is fully voice acted, there is nice music (RIP Michio Kinugasa), and the art is good.

No clue what "Prelude to the Fallen" is but I'm talking about the original game (Utawarerumono) which released in 2002.
It is the modern remake of the first title in the saga. Why do you think the remakes are shit?
The sequels. Of course, the remake of the first game too if they removed the 18+ content. While I'm no Arthandas and am fine with certain non-adult VNs, releasing a popular 18+ game and then stabbing the buyers/fans of that game in the back by releasing non-adult sequels is absolutely disgusting.
(For me, this doesn't just apply in this case. I have voiced my disgust at Falcom before when after ~25 years of being a PC company, they stabbed the fans (myself included) in the back by becoming a console company.)

Of course, more tangible reasons like worse art apply too.

Yeah. While not an "extremist" like you, I personally think that content removal is almost always a bad thing.
