I'm honestly surprised GW hasn't just commissioned one of those desktop simulator bros to recreate their game digitally.
All you would need are the models and table environments. They could still make people buy the rule books but online, a la Wizards of the Coast.
Yeah, GW has always been obsessed with the fear that vidya will somehow destroy the market for minis. IMO its completely misplaced, since the amount of people who are into building and painting miniatures AND also want to play with them will always be relatively low and its not like actual hobbyists will drop what they like for vidya version. On the other hand porting the table top system directly to digital version would be another source of revenue (hell, they could even sell "digital minis" or whatever) and would probably even get some people into the real thing...
No their fear is valid, this will give power back to the players and nothing terrifies GW more then that.
Because the first thing problematic fuckers like me would do is laugh at the idea of playing the current rules set (bloated mess of ugly clunky rules that allows for little customization of your armies compared to older editions and despite a sea of strategems, everyone just takes the same ones every time, also special characters ain't special anymore because they are considered core to their army lists instead of being flavorful additions that usually weren't that optimal) and make mods to play a previous edition (3e is my sweetspot but any that ain't the current one is fine imo), say fuck you to "official" 40k modern minis (juan diaz daemonettes are back baby! aswell as non fugly repentias and wyches in bikini armor) which will threaten GW's "core values".
Finally their primary business strat of selling 9943583984598534 overpriced space marine mini variants would not thrive under these conditions, people might actually play obscure armies again!
