I mean I like DS2 but it feels the most clunky of the bunch by far.

Dark Souls 2 combat feels realistic, players looking for a more casual experience can always play games such as Dark Souls III, Assassin's Creed or Elden Ring.

Nigga please some of the enemies' hitboxes activate at like 1/10th of the windup, once you know you know and it's whatever but realistic my ass.

2 may have spoiled it as even movement alone is much more fluid
nigga wut
I don't know man, I feel there's more weight and purpose so to speak. Shit response I know but I feel you're more "floaty" in DS1.
On controller they changed the way the software reads the stick from direct input in DS1 to 8 active zones both for movement and camera which functionally simulates a DPad in DS2. I don't think it was a step forward.

It's very realistic to die when the enemy's giant blade misses you completely, with two arms length of empty space between your body and the sword.

This counts as a hit in DS2:

I don't get the appeal of Souls PvP.

As originally conceived, it was made for griefing / trolling other players. It fucking ruled. The current state of pvp is the result of years of whining from "pros" who wanted honorable duels and noobs who cried foul because they didn't like getting wrecked.

This is such a funny thread. "Is the worst From game actually the best one? Discuss". Almost as funny as "Is Elden Ring afraid of Dragon's Dogma 2".

The best invading location in Dark Souls II was objectively Frigid Outskirts from DLC3. In general, this was a location that made noobs such as all the noobs in this thread extremely mad, because the blizzard made them lure mobs like crazy, instead of progressing through the level intelligently (this is why noobs like Soyden Ring, where you have vast spaces of nothingness where nothing happens).

But the real creme de la creme was that narrow bridge just before the boss. As you can see on the map, there were some boxes placed next to the bridge. So the thing to do here was to invade, go towards the end of the level, and use a silver talisman to hide between the boxes and wait. When the host finally progressed through the entire location and was almost ready to fight the boss, running on the bridge, you could use a Dragonrider Bow to push the host off the bridge. It took a lot of precision and the right timing to do that, but it was a method that allowed you to generate the maximum amount of butthurt possible in Dark Souls II.

And immediately cancels it out with infinite lifegems.
Life gems are balanced within the game.

You have to lose your exp to level up to buy them (you can farm but that's true in all souls games).
They're not an instant heal so you can pop one and still die
Dark souls 2's levels are designed knowing you can be healing and it won't matter because enemies will kill you from full health if you're not aware of your surroundings.

Life gems aren't an issue in the grand scheme of things. They're only an issue if you see dark souls as a boss rush like 3 is.

DS2 is boss rush compared to 1 and 3 though, neither has bonfire in main game like the one outside Rotten. Souls level "loss" is nothing when you have much cheaper level ups, enemies do less damage overall if you're not dead set on tanking every hit. They're not instant, but stackable, and don't anchor you to a spot like estus or charms.

Demon princes.
Gael
Friede
Dancer/Vordt if you defeat either first
Gravetender
Old Demon king
Nameless King
Soul of Cinder

Asylum demon/Stray demon
Demon fire sage
Sanctuary Guardian
Gaping Dragon
Ceaseless discharge

I would argue Rotten's bonfire is more dangerous than most of the other ones because the poison dolls on the way. It's easy to get poisoned there if you don't know where to roll going on while many of the above offer literally zero challenge. Maybe you can get vertigo dropping into the princes?

Dark Souls 2 Vanilla might have been good (unfortunately I didn't buy it) but Scholar of the First Sin is a tedious chore of a game with too many enemies in enclosed or hazardous areas which just leads to the experience being boring.

The combat is not enjoyable enough to carry the repetitious grind which constitutes every level I reached in the game. That, combined with the frequent gotcha encounter design (much of which you can only learn about through trial and error rather than observation and patient play) make the game feel annoying and bullshit. Also, no I-frames during backstabs, mist doors, or the first part of lever pulling is pathetic.

I quit at the Iron Keep because I just got too bored with the whole experience and I felt I was also overlevelled by clearing most of the areas that led to boss battles. The fighting was time consuming rather than difficult but for me there was just too much time spent dealing with exactly the same enemies multiple times in a row to clear an area in order to progress to the boss.

What do you mean by "clearing areas"? Don't tell me you actually grinded to despawn enemies. Because if you were just killing all enemies few times on repeat run to the boss I don't think you can overlevel that way. Plus it's normal to gain a lot more levels in this game compared to other souls game. After main game and DLCs my level usually was about 180.

I hated the runbacks so much I grinded the areas between the last campfire and the boss until I either got there with enough estus to beat them or they stopped spawning.

Yeah no wonder you hate it then. I never felt I needed to do anything of the sort. In all my playthroughs of the game over the years I have seen maybe 2 enemies despawn, at most. And that was only when I was stupid enough to farm for some armor set I ended up not using. Never again.

I only learned the game has despawning after I tried farming desert sorceresses for their gear, another dumb mechanic that got slapped on without much thought.
