Modern interfaces are mostly floaty, scrolly pieces of shit that look like it's made by website designers

Less floaty, more solid. Less scrolling, more grids. Less assymetry, more symmetry. It is fine if the UI takes up more a lot of the screen contrary to what modern design philosophy seems to dictate; the UI is hugely important, especially in games like these - why must this not be reflected in its presence on the screen? Because of IMMERSHUN? Please.

Interface that Caters to You:
Wasteland 2 allows not only character and world customization, but interface layout and design customization as well. With the range of game mechanics permitted inside and outside of combat, we don't want to limit you solely to customizing your character - we allow you to customize your interface to match your playstyle and choose the "language" and format with which you communicate with the game.

Since this mention of customizable interface during and soon after the kickstarter, I've mostly been expecting a "floaty, scrolly piece of shit".

Personally, I'd like my interface "language" to be something with a bit more Max Headroom:

By the way, what does that button next to end turn do? Seems very situational to have a button to drop rocks on the heads of people who happen to be under a ledge.

"Crush with boulder" is the most important new skill in the game. For too long people went without the immersive experience of crushing people with boulders. Now, finally, we've done it: button, boulder crushing, connected now, in Wasteland 2.

(it's the "ambush" button)

Seriously fuck the fact that they chose deep silver as a partner. Who better than those that killed what was left of piranha bytes. I'm still so butthurt about the abomination (including day 1dlc areas) that was risen 2.. that knowing I helped fund something that brings koch media any more money, will have me wait with supporting their next kickstarter until it is finished and in stores.

I hope the Agricultural Center (inside the facility when the gameplay video ended) is really atmospheric and creepy. I was emulating a consoletard game the other week and it sprang to mind as good influence for Ag Centre:

More ilkely, they are just waiting to see if WL2 is successful. If it is, don't be surprised to see EA funded, EAware developed open world action pay2win half-MMO Wasteland 3 with gEAy sex.

Can't do that, Brian owns the Wasteland trademark.

Oh, good. But do you have a deal for more than one game? If no EA could stiil say, "Ok, WL2 was a success for you, so you can do WL3 but only with us as your publisher."

Thanks for the clarification.

This makes me sad, because it may mean no Wasteland 3 for another 25 years, if EA decides they want too much money, or something. :(

Actually, that's not more likely at all. The EA thing to do would be to squeeze as much money out of inXile's future use of the IP as they can.

I don't think we do, but as I've already said, we don't really *need* them to make another sequel. We own the name and the desert rangers name which are the most iconic, the only consequence would be we'd have to move the game out of Arizona, basically. They can't force us to do anything.

I don't know and I don't care about Logic Arts and whatever they did. I didn't back them.

Deep Silver acts just like a publisher in this, with the exception of digital sales. Everything else is business as usual. They will handle QA (with one of the shittiest QA teams in the industry I might add) and will take profits on a per-sale basis. A pure "physical distributor" would print, handle and ship for a batch price. Also, Deep Silver acts as a 'traditional publisher' affecting other games, which this venture will support with its business.

They didn't provide funding. Most importantly, they aren't overseeing development and meddling in, which is the number one reason for publisher hate. Right now, the deal Fargo signed with DS sounds like it might be close to ideal. There isn't even any single reason to bitch at this point unless more details pointing to the contrary surface.

You think physical sales are important for an indie developer? You think this will make them better business? You think this is inevitable? LOL

In 2011, digital sales made up 80% of PC games sales. Now take in consideration that this change happened in a drastic curve upwards, and it's now 2013. What could it be at today? 85? 90? More?

LOL you're using fucking Farmville as an example? In an article from 2011? You probably didn't get the memo but it's been sometime since that bubble burst.

Yeah. I tried to poke holes in it but couldn't find anything. Creative control? Ours. DLC/expansion? Ours. Release date? Ours. Digital sales? Ours. Bags of money? Ours. We don't even discuss the game with them, they just leave us to it.

Plus, our genre is really strong in Europe. Germany is a really big market for us, and AFAIK also one of the biggest physical retail markets remaining for PC. Sure, it's pretty dead in the US, and I do expect digital sales to be more important, but yeah, there are regions where the market is stronger.

I love this post at NMA:

In most cases bloom-effect used not for good picture and not for increasing quality of game. This... bloom best way to hide poverty of models and backgrounds. Unity have a very good render and effect like a blure, bloom not nessesary. This is instrument for 3D action games. Here we have isometric game. Even camera lie closer to ground - this effect bad decision. Now you know why.

This map which i made for one game. Villages made in 9.5 days of working. City map in 2 weeks. You can see many detailed objects on ground, and you must remember this do one man, and this is strategic game with more limited zoom than in Wasteland 2. But even you zoom in - you cannot find something like a blure textures and etc. You don’t need use bloom - because picture is good. You don’t need hide anything.

Step back to this map. Let's try zoom. What we have? This level can say - "I'm ? rich and successful man". That can say to us its picture.

13.jpg

Let's try add to picture bloom. Some think that this way add to image more quality? Each effect must configurated by game developer. Bloom as is - disgusting spectacle. It is necessary to set it up. Not only bloom. Smoke. We need atmosphere here.

14.jpg

Lets try add moderated fog for distance. Ready?

15.jpg

In many game engines developers turn on all effects on maximum volume like if to say - "Look at this incredible bl-o-o-o-om!". I want answer on this - "shut up". Because all effects be must added in good proportions. If you add to one spoon of cola bottle of vodka... what you recieve? Good coctail? No... you be drunk. Like a pig. If the way of visuals of game of present day be drunk - goal reached.

My way add effects in good proportions, like do good bartender. Let's try another filter. Something like brightness and contrast. But not as in bad games. Little.

16.jpg

And add bloom.

17.jpg

You can imagine what i can create use engine like Unity instead of easy engine for simple browser game, where have no shaders, effects and etc? Unity have a good instruments to manipulate of visual. And... sorry for this... but, my humble opinion - if you have a budget over 2,933,252 $ - you can make good visual picture. If you developer with world name - you can make good visual picture. If you love gamer... you undertand... you CAN.

I do not want to hear about the gameplay. It can be amazing. Perfect. Best! But the visual image - terrible. Interface - terrible how my life before marriage. If you made old school game in present time - you don't need repeat mistakes of past. Present world give opportunity to make good old games. What reason to use Unity if you use - nothing? For bloom? For blure? If you want show progress - i think need only one - good work.

I made my level via old technology. Only geometry. Only diffuse textures. No dynamic lights. No shaders. No shadows exept lightmaps on textures. No blendind between texures. No decals. No filters. Almost without alfa channels (exept trees).

When I look at the work of Obsidian... serious... this is - Delicious. Niam-niam. Bacgrounds. Characters. All made with love from artist.

Here - no love.

P.S.
And one more detail - this screens from easy social browser game. In this game you can't have a zoom like in Wasteland 2. Never. I'm landing for example of lightwork and filters. What i want to say? If developer with world name try to make a game in sense of old traditions - he don't need to use bad visual effects from horrible games. He can and must make a meal as a delicacy. Politely.

There is no reason to hide anything in the fog of bloom.

I do not offence anyone. Who i am? Little indie-developer. What i can make near alongside such giants like Brian Fargo? What I can?... I can? Yes. I can. In this my force. I know that i can make it. I know that i love games and gamers. I can prove that image can be better if somebody put in meal - love, quality and respect.

Thanks for your time. I'll go. Doing my small deeds further.

He is right on the money with his criticism in this and other posts. WL2 should look far better with their resources and talent.

Thanks Surf Solar and valcik, thanks all.

I'm too lazy. I thought - no one will see it. You see. "Do not to be lazy" - my motto. Broke it (smile). But never worried about rails. Only your eyes touch this screens. This art style been cancelled. Too quality. That is reason to cancel it. Sometimes i really hate this world. Hate reasons to cancel anything. You remember... m-m-m... canceled games of Troika Games. Look at video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqQhwu1d64A&feature=player_detailpage

Why? Why this guys made it in deeper 2005 and nobody can't help them? Why i see W2 screens and i want to cry? Where style which we can see in damned 2005... almost 8 years ago. Eight! And many people say... wow... nice screens. What? Nice? Where? I beg you ... the bus on the screenshot W2 does not quite live up to the tire lying on the ground in tech-demo of game 2005. What the hell, people have forgotten how to work? Or we gamers have forgotten how to see?

They in the past already doing better than many of developers do now. They in the past already made a visual style is better than Wasteland 2 style now. No-o-w. In 2013.

Hell joke of fate... better people and companies been eaten by fat damned publishers, and now, when industry can born again, rolling time back i look at this screens. World. Strange place where good things die too fast.

God... if you hear me... bring back Troika. Please. I don't need from you anything. I don't ask you before. Just open eyes of people.
