You can see it in how the games work and how they cater to their "target audience". Underrail is clearly targeted at a niche indie market.
Yes but there's a difficulty option. Ideally, Inxile could cater to RPG-enthusiasts as well as to whatever broad game pass peasant crowd they're already working for.
The caveat of too many options is that none of them feel special or needed in the end, they are just there for the need of the feel of progression. The "broken builds" are within the method of design, so it is lukewarm or outright bad inspite of the production values or intents. Give it a bit of a thought and it will open up to you.
Well, I should further study W3's systems to proper compare them to Underrail's, but I'm not sure that too many options (to learn, not to have simultaniously) is a bad thing, more like a pita for devs which is fine.

This is where you are absolutely right. They could've gone for - for example - more systemic approach therein. Well, I do not know how they have handles their difficulty.... so no argument here.

So would I, but I'm talking more on principals and ideals, not so much on actuality, which I do not know of. But earlier knowledge and common sense (on the subject) gives me a good idea on what to expect. Perhaps the "what to expect" part is what I'd whished you to pick on, heavily (because that's what I did). Anyway, you're a smart dude, you can veer off of your normal pedigree in thought. Right? I do it all the time, and it gives me insight on things I loathe; understanding the reasons they work (even if not infallible.... none of us has that).

We’ve really enjoyed seeing everyone’s reactions on social media when they realize how much we upgraded the Collector’s Edition (thank you Microsoft!) from what our original backer page had promised. It was a labor of love, and serves as a huge thanks to you, our backers, as we would not be where we are without you.

Yeah, well I'm still bitter that you decided not to use any of that Microsoft money on making the DRM-free discs you promised would be included.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I got a big fuggin' box delivered to my doorstep today. It's just under a foot cubed. I opened the parcel out of curiosity and it's W3 related.

Is it the game? Or stuff related to the kickstarter? Did it have a kickstarter, or was it a Fig thing? I forget. Can't even remember what I backed it for; I think it was £25 or so. Anyway, I'm observing the 3-day rule for plastic and steel contaminated with Covid-19 so shouldn't have opened it really. I'm pretty sure I got a mask with a filter on it from the W2 stuff, so maybe some loot in there. Everything except good ol' fashioned CDs I expect.

You can't say you didn't expect it.

Looking forward to this. I'll wait a couple weeks after it's available to start playing (because that's how games work now) but one big improvement I'm looking forward to is the change to how skill checks work. I'm completing my "definitive WL2 playthrough" right now (I don't care if it carries over or not) & have run into a safe in Seal Beach where there's a chest with Explosives. My Demolitions 10 guy has an 11% chance of disarming it. I don't normally spaz out & just accept failures but I was like "I *must* see what's in this" - I'm probably never gonna play this game again.

Finally succeed: it's got 6 x .45 ammo, a crystal ball, & a decoder ring in it. I mean, either make it deterministic, or else let me increase my Demolitions skill above 10, or let Trinkets go above 10. Don't put annoying "the best skill you can get still fails 9 times out of 10" shit in your game. So, I am being persuaded to the Determinsic > Random side of things.

Not sure if this has already been answered in the thread, but, with W3 coming out next week, do I need to play W2 to get the full experience?

Nah, takes place in an entirely different state. The intro will get you up to speed on what happened in Wasteland 2 (the Cochise AI took over the ranger citadel, Vargas sacrificed himself to nuke it, the rangers are feeling the strain)

Did anyone play the beta? If so how optimistic or pessimistic you are with the game?

The problem I have is every time I finish a inXile's game, six months later the directors cut comes out. Pisses me off.

Don't even mention, I finally decided to replay Wasteland 2 for the DC this week before Wasteland 3

Oh there's a new trailer:

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/08/20/wasteland-3-co-op-trailer-and-deep-dive/

Diving Deep into the Co-op of Wasteland 3
Summary
  • Wasteland 3 launches August 28 with Xbox Game Pass, and on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC.
  • There are lots of online co-op options for both Xbox One and PC to ensure both players make progress and have fun.
  • For more details and a look at co-op in action, check out the trailer above.

We’re excited to share new exclusive detail about Wasteland 3’s online co-op on PC and Xbox One, as well as exclusive reveal of the new co-op focused trailer above.

In Wasteland 3’s co-op you can work with a partner to strategize in tactical combat, make decisions on how to navigate the gangs, factions, and cults of Colorado, and how to divvy up their loot. There are also unique moments in the game that can only be pulled off in co-op, like turning in a quest to two rival NPCs at the same time for double the reward. While it’s not a PvP game, there are also unique opportunities to mess with your friend, like spreading rumors about them at your home base.

Wasteland3_Coop_Inline1.jpg

Playing co-op in Wasteland 3 is as simple as choosing multiplayer from the main menu and inviting a friend. You can also choose to post your game in the public browser, or for PC, connect directly via a friend’s IP. Just keep in mind that the game doesn’t allow crossplay across PC and Xbox One, so you’ll both want to be on the same platform.

Picking Sides

Once you’ve linked up with a co-op buddy, you can choose whether to start a new game or load a save, and then choose your difficulty options. If you’re starting a new game, each player will customize their Ranger before heading off into Colorado. If you’re loading a save further into the game where you have more than two characters, the host will need to divvy them up through squad management—each player always controls a portion of one full Ranger squad. The host can choose which characters each player controls, and how many. Playing with a friend who is new to the genre? You can give them just one or two Rangers to control and lighten their burden.

Wasteland3_Coop_Inline2.jpg

In most cases the host of a co-op session is going to have control over things like the squad setup, joint conversation options, and driving the Kodiak; however, the host can choose to give the guest control over joint conversation decisions if they want. If you’re going afk to grab a fresh beverage you can, for example, pass conversation control over to them. However, both players have control over their portion of the squad, and both players can loot, shop at merchants independently, and even hold their own conversations with different NPCs at the same time. Whether you’re in lockstep, or try to cover as much of an area as possible separately, the options are there for you to choose how to engage with co-op and the game does the heavy lifting to make sure your decisions have meaning in the world.

Hittin’ the Dusty Trail

Once you’re done playing, the options are open for how each of you want to continue next time. Both the host and guest will have saves from the co-op session they had, and each can separately choose to continue playing that save by themselves, or they could wait and continue playing together later. Say your friend is checking it out on Xbox Game Pass and wants to see your high-level character, you can invite them in for one session, and then continue on without them later on. Your friend will also have a save from that session too and could actually continue playing the game by themselves from your progression point if they choose.

The options are open for how you want to experience the deep, reactive story and engaging tactical combat of Wasteland 3 with friends. Wasteland 3 launches August 28 with Xbox Game Pass, and on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. For the latest on Wasteland 3, stay tuned to Xbox Wire.

Seems less likely to happen this time now that they no longer have the "running out of backer money" issue.

Grotesque: You tagged my question "YES," while others have said playing W2 isn't needed. What's your take?

No amount of "intro movie" will replace the lore, background and the immersive gaming experience that emerge from playing a game that precedes another.

In some cases, the sequel is better than a former game in a franchise and a good dose of gaming enjoyment could be extracted when you as a gamer see improvement in the journey to maturity of the developers.
Of course the opposite can happen but only so you would be able to appreciate the former game more and truly detect what went wrong when all the graphix whores and fluff addicts will surround you yelling that the last game in the franchise the best.

You want the "full experience", don't you?

Does the combat look better in this? I've not paid any attention to the dev at all, but it's the primary element in WL2 I found to be very wanting.
