Dishonored.
Well, what can I say? Best game since... Bloodlines? Spoilers below.
Pros:
- Probably the only game that I can think of, that is EXTREMELY derivative yet so GOOD at borrowing things. Influences are quite obvious: Thief (stealth and gameworld), Deus Ex & System Shock (toys, tools, hacking), Bloodlines, Witcher (C&Cs, quests) Bioshock (retro atmosphere / alternative history / ugly faces), Half-Life (quarantine, audio transmissions, evil overlord), Hitman (assassinations)... But almost every element borrowed from other game has been implemented in wise way: it works and doesn't brake the experience.
- Pulls out proper stealth gameplay for the first time since Thief (2? 3?). Motherfucking period. And no - Hitman / Sam Fischer don't count.
- Popamoles the stealth a bit (teleport, slow time, possession spell), but making it more fun at the same time. Gameplay is no longer constant quicksave-quickload spam (sorry, Garret
) - you can use multiple solutions when somebody is close to detecting you (run away, slow time, possess him, fight).
- Rock-solid technically (1.3 Patch): constant 60 FPS, no crashes, (well, it crashed a couple of times, but because of my overheating graphics card), almost no bugs (in such complex game it's a godamned miracle / job well done).
- Graphics are gorgeous, except human faces (see below).
- Audio works fine as a gameplay element (detecting threats).
- Voice-acting is good, but till the end credits I wasn't aware that so many high-budget VAs were hired (Susan Sarandon, Brad Dourif, Carrie Fisher, Lena Headey, Chloe Moretz). I think less expensive dudes would make the same job...
- The gameworld lore is fantastic: alternative world, alternative energy sources, weird magic threatened by the technology (Thief says hello). Writing in books, notes, audio logs is very good... Too bad that the main campaign is not so well written (see below).
- The Outsider works well as a story device, adding to the "morality" system. Best "player overseer" since the Wheelchair-guy from SMT3 - Nocturne.
- References to classic games are nice (young stealth apprentice in Daud's lair, etc.).
- Terri Brosius was one of the writers. All hail the Machine Mother! (Y no voice-acting, thou?).
- Choices and Consequences (Bloodlines) in stealth game (Thief) with combat, gadgets, hacking, etc. (Deus Ex). What more can we ask for? (well, se below).
- Level design in some missions is teh sex. But in others (The Bridge, The Lighthouse) - not so much.
- Main characters are well-written: almost all of them have distinctive personalities (Callista-Piero "romance", Lydia's remarks (constant sexual tension) and Wallace's "perfect butler" attitude).
- Some characters are not who they appear to be at the beginning (Granny Rags FTW!) - hard to pull off in a computer game.
- And a lot fucking more - just play the game.
Cons:
- The game encourages stealth (summary after every mission), which makes combat a little bit... Unnecessary? I was able to complete the game killing less than 20 enemies (most of them fell down some cliff after being
blackjacked nonlethal-ed. Of course it's a part of the "morality" system (the more you kill, the more "dark" the gameworld becomes), so it's excusable... But still - combat looks interesting and fun (stealth assassinations), yet if you choose a stealthy approach, you should avoid it at all costs.
- When "ghosting", zombies are much more difficult to deal with than regular humans. I think it should be the other way around?
- These little poison-shooting shellfish are IMO the most demanding enemies in the entire game. Compared to them, Tallboys are p. easy to avoid / defeat. WTF happened here?
- Human faces look like shit, what the fucking fuck? Bloodlines did it much better 10 years ago. I can understand civilians and soldiers looking ugly (plague / job). But all women in the game (the Queen and whores included) are ugly as hell too.
- Emily is irritating. No more hugs and stalking me in the sleep, you little bitch!
- Main campaign is weak as hell, story-wise: uninspired (betrayal-revenge-errand boy-unavoidable plot twist-gather gear-ultimate battle!) and unconvincing. How to deal with the most dangerous man in the country? Well, let's ask one of our servants to poison him and dump him in the river. How about cutting his fucking head off first, morons? Daud capturing Corvo instead of killing him was stupid as well. How about braking his leg or something (worked for the
Hammerite whattheirnamewas).
- Final battle is a letdown (Flooded District was much more fun than the Lighthouse). Enemies changing routes / reinforcements appearing after some time were nice (Y no in earlier missions, though?!), but lack of final boss & proper boss-fight wasn't. Sloppy fucking handjob here.
- Battle against Daud was a joke. Such a bad mofo and you can
blackjack non-lethal him like a little girl? Weak! Some teabagging (at least) should be applied here...
- Ending being an outcome of the entire campaign ("morality" system) was nice, but... You don't have ANY choice in the final mission, which is bad - it can add to the game (Desu Ex 1, NOT DX-HR who sucks cocks in this department).
- Going popamole-free (disabling quest compass, markers, contextual icons, etc.) works well most of the time... Except in rare occasions when you have to enable quest compass to reach an objective. "Take unconscious Curnow to safe location" was probably the worst - how the fuck should I know that I have to dump him into SPECIFIC trash can?! AFAIR DX-HR did it better - persons would tell you WHERE you should go and WHAT you should do. You don't need quest compass to find somebody / reach an objective.
- The only thing this game lacks is IMO maturity. And I don't mean Witcher's maturity (some nice rack would be neat of course) but actual mature problems / issues / psychological thingies and such. You know, like in the books, movies and stuff. Maybe that's too much for a computer game, I dunno...
Still, the best game since
Thief 1 Deus Ex 1 Bloodlines Deus Ex - Human Revolution.
tl;dr
play nao.
