Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is. Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
I'm mopping up game #16 of the year. Romacing SaGa 2. An interesting concept, with generational leaps, and a new party every now and then. I ended up with a super strong party by the end, and mowed down the final boss pretty easily. I usually do not have this experience in SaGa games, where my first encounter with the final boss ends in victory.

I'll do a NG+ to mop up the rest of the achievements.

Playing Hollow Knight, it's a fun exploration platformer, really like the music and visuals too.

I'm aware term "metroidvania" exists, I just don't think it's exhaustive description of all related games that came after or before.

the 'vania' part was obviously added by ppl that couldn't give nintendo full credit anyway

i played castlevania on the NES and SNES... linear non-exploration games with non-progression items you lose every time you loot another weapon

zelda and blaster master were more metroid-like

it's kinda baffling... i actually like 'exploration platformer'

Metroidvania works because everyone knows what it means. It doesn't really matter if it makes sense.

The term RPG can apply to almost any game, if you make it literal.

The vania part is in reference to games like Symphony of the Night, I always thought.

People mostly mean the PS1 SotN for the 'vania part, maaaybe CV2 and the other one nobody cares about. There're still 2D games that have exploration and platforming, but otherwise little in common with Metroid or SotN, like Pitfall or La-Mulana.

which was a big change in the series, generations after metroid

sotn is a metroid-like

... but I get what you are saying... most gamers are millenials or worse these days

I wouldn't say metroidvania necessarily even implies 2D platformer, just an open-ish world where area progression is primarily about gaining new abilities to survive or get past obstacles rather than story related. For example Dark Souls and System Shock 1 fall into the same category. There's a reason you don't describe those games as just "Action RPG" or "FPS", respectively.

I've finished DaS 1 and 3, they're definitely action adventure games, Souls games were also influential enough to define their own niche of "soulsborne", but not every action adventure/action RPG is soulsborne. Same with strategy games, HoMM and Warcraft are both strategy games, but one is TBS, the other is RTS because of how they play.

From what I saw on YouTube (haven't played Mario after SNES), it still is.

...maybe they've gotten better, but the 3D mario games I played were adventure/collectathons. Not bad games mind you, I enjoyed mario64 and even mario sunshine, but I wasn't challenged at all with jumping like I was in 2D.

EAD ought to run through the challenges in Blue Fire (did this ever get a physical release?) to learn what challenging platforming looks like in 3D.

...funny, that game is considered a souls-like first.

After thinking for awhile i decided that if i am in a Diablo mood i might as well finally complete the original one. It plays almost like roguelike of sorts compared to all the later Hack'n'Slashes.
Played as a warrior before that and made the mistake of completely ignoring magic. Definitely won't be repeating the same mistake again, i am going with the sorcerer now. Not sure if i will be fine with focusing on Int>Vit while ignoring Dex and Str.

I only later learned that these warnings about the Butcher were the dev's way of saying that you're not supposed to fight the butcher immediately but instead should come back to him later after getting stronger. As a warrior i bruteforced him with a health potion abuse, as a sorcerer i cheesed him with a firewall scroll. Shame that as a sorcerer i won't have much use for the cleaver.

Not sure if i should go now.

I like the first diablo, but it's too slow.

D2 is fun, but mephisto runs are a dumb gameplay loop

D3 after it was fixed is the perfect videogame. Hardcore is very fair because the design is brilliant, and you can see everything coming. I have about 1500 hours logged on the Switch version... all hardcore. Plays very much like a rogue-like that never ends.

D4 is always online cash grab... gonna wait till they fix it, like they did with 3

edit: woops, i lied... 1400

I have 29 Switch games. Only if I combine all of their playtime, do I reach 1400 hours.

i have to delete hardcore characters every time a season sounds fun

I've never finished a new game+ in any Diablo or similar games, I always lose interest halfway through. Closest ones were Titan Quest and Grim Dawn, but at some point it all devolves into grinding for resistances in all of them.
