I'm kind of boring when it comes to role playing ideas and tend to often go with just a two-handed sword wielding fighter. What were some memorable characters you role played and why?

Once I saw the Confirmed Bachelor option in FO:NV I immediately committed to a gay serial killer roleplay build. The game even seemed to guess what I was going for, since I spawned with a straight razor.

My approach is to roleplay an entire party of 6 with same names and overall traits in every game. If game doesn't allow multiple characters, I play the incarnations of these premades one by one.

These defaults are clr/barb/druid/rog/wis/fighter in that particular order if we're talking about standard dnd. It is still amusing to me to try and fit their fleshed-out personas into every new game I play and has never bored me. They are based on my own story set in Greyhawk universe and followed me throgh many years and a fuckton of games

A vague fascimile of me but with magic and guns if the setting allows. I like my power fantasies, sue me.

I did once RP a Dunmer in Morrowind who starts out as a faithful servant of the Temple only to have a severe crisis of faith after being deemed the Nerevarine. It was fun for a while, but physically telling myself to play "adult make-believe" by myself in front of a computer felt so silly I couldn't take it seriously.

A long haired Mexican(?) burger flipper ex-con in Project Zomboid with a taste for knives. Got bitten in a parking lot just when things were starting to look up for him. There was no bleach in the service station, so he went out fighting while shouting at the zombies.

A hiver prince in Kenshi who lead a warband of hivers and took them on a journey throughout the world until they became massively overpowered. Not sure how his story ended, but I always imagined him uniting all the hivers as a great hero.

Satanist Avatar in Ultima VII. This was my first roleplaying experience around 30 years ago. I'd just go around murdering people in their homes, then I'd drag them to an empty house and perform satanic rituals with the candles I stole from the church.

Intelligent Orc Cleric in NWN1 who intimidated everyone and was a general asshole. I actually enjoyed the first chapter of the game and I fell in love with my character for some reason. Unfortunately I found the second chapter unplayable and quit.

I think my second favourite character to roleplay was being an Illuminati agent in the first, MMO incarnation of Secret World when it came out. Being a Templar, and the Asian society as well (forget its name) was also fun. For most of the time, going through the three faction questlines in that game, the illusion of being a member of a secret society and moving between the bizarre, almost Lovecraftian secret society world and the normal world was pretty amazing. It was a weird combination of being the Chosen One and being a schlub - from the point of view of the normal world, you were godly and special, but from the point of view of the secret societies, you were just a n00b :)

But my favourite roleplaying experience ever was playing as the various superheroes I dreamed up in City of Heroes. There wasn't much responsiveness to your particular hero in the game, but there was a lot of scope to create whatever character, look and power combination you wanted, and room to go wild with the bio (which others could read - and they'd complement you if you'd written a good origin story or whatever :) ). There was a lot of roleplay lite in the game in PUGs, people easily slipped into the vibe of being in a team of superheroes hunting dastardly villains. You could also macro speech/chat, with things like, "Take that, you dastardly villain! AND THAT!" attached to attacks or other moves, and it was always fun when someone in the team had some cool, intricate macro with some typical superhero trope. Just a lot of just light-hearted fun, with everyone joking around and having a good time.

*sigh* PUGs of perfect strangers would go on for ages doing mission after mission, dropping and picking people up, chatting away merrily, till often there were only two of you left from the original PUG that had started a couple of hours ago, and you'd wistfully say your goodbyes. That's what I call a social gameplay experience.

Since I greatly admire the works of Robert E.Howard,I always like to RP a Barbarian character with a strong sense of tribal honor, but also a distinct bloodlust and frenzy in battle. Not exactly similar to Conan, though, who was a man who possessed many talents and was not prone to mindless rage.
I also like Paladins.

Normally a Good (alighned) Fighter. I wish I could roleplay a (proper) knight in most games, but RPGs are shit so alas I am left unfulfilled.

My favorite character to play was Zachary Arunsel on a PW on NWN. Essentially an old hermit monk living alone in the Underdark. When I ran into other players I'd give them prophetic clues about the campaign's metaplot that nobody believed (but were true.)

He got really kitted out! He eventually got on hit dispel gloves. But he wasn't great in a fight because he refused to use magic, including buffs, potions, healing wands and low level monks in 3.5 really need those to do anything.

Attempting to roleplay a good lich in Wrathfinder was... interesting. I made it all the way successfully without being evil at all up until the actual part where I was ready to be "liched" by the process the game uses (I won't spoil). Prior to that I was sort of a semi-lich, started turning green and everything, got lots of lich-like powers, and thought I was all set. Then I realized I couldn't go through with it and rejected the process, to a rather surprising end. I still retained many of my lich-like powers, the game didn't freak out, I was able to choose a whole new legendary path, and even the city eventually cleared out most of its undead citizenry, reflecting the fact that I no longer had the power to retain them.

I never finished the game, for various reasons, but that entire process was rather remarkable, and a testament to the flexibility the game offers.

I liked playing Mr. Everybuild Dragonman in Skyrim. He was a champion fighter, master wizard, cunning thief, ruthless assassin, and dragonborn as Todd intended. Peak roleplaying.

I have characters that I have been playing through all games that have character creation for quite a long time. I have one (or more) for each type of role. My oldest character is a druid type. My hand to hand character has been around for quite awhile too. I have a battlemage type, two handed type, a dwarf only guy, a sneaky rogue type, etc. I think in all I have around a pool of 20ish characters to pull from. They are all a big part of my enjoyment for most games. Many came from D&D but a good deal were born from videogames. My latest character to add to my stable was born in Elden Ring. He is a grizzled old veteran who is the grandfather of one of my other characters. Its super nerdy, but we are on an RPG forum after all.

I play as a dude (typically fighter/close combat type) who recruits/creates nothing but chicks as party members.

What I wouldn’t give for a Dev to create a modern Dragonlance CRPG. I would love a BGish type game in that setting.
You might want to consider playing Solasta, which has a setting clearly inspired by Dragonlance, complete with draconian Sivaks "Soraks" and dragons masquerading as elf-women, though it would have been much better if they actually had the Dragonlance license rather than creating a jumbled homage.

Since Ultima is the first retro CRPG I got into, I play the same character in every game and pretend that it's the Avatar going on another adventure.
