Quite an interesting thing that. I wouldn't say all the "repainted" versions of famous scultpures look worse, some of them do indeed look better coloured. You have to factor talent in at that painting level as well as the actual sculpting level (there are obviously going to be better and worse ways of painting a statue, and an archaeological reconstructionist isn't necessarily going to be good at statue-painting).

But what it reminds me of more than anything else is some ancient Greek comment I read aeons ago about that super-famous sculptor in Athens, forget his name, and the comment was that his statues were incredibly lifelike.

When you factor in the painting, it makes a lot more sense thinking that people in those days (no cinema!) might have thought such painted statues lifelike, than looking at a denuded marble statue and thinking they might have thought it lifelike.
