I think I'll give this a go again to see if they were able to fix at least some of my gripes with the game from when I played after version 3 hit...
At that point, the game still had an endless amount of bugs and design issues that it was just an overall bad experience. These were some of my gripes:
I've heard that they did fix some sound issues and also upgraded their version of SDL (which is responsible for input) so at least the sound and dpad issues might be fixed.
I've also heard a while ago that they changed the logic of how quickly allies will turn hostile after accidental hits so now fighting together might actually be feasible?
No idea about all the rest, though some can be helped with mods.
At that point, the game still had an endless amount of bugs and design issues that it was just an overall bad experience. These were some of my gripes:
- L ships force you to completely disable sound effects or your ears will explode when controlling one. Sound effect volume doesn't do anything (except when at 0, where it does turn effects off).
- Joystick &throttle dpads are unusable as they trigger twice or not at all.
- Trading & mining AI is simply stupid and will make the worst possible trade choices (e.g. doing a trade with only 5% of cargo filled). If you want to make any real money, you have to micromanage every little thing.
- S ships assigned to your carriers will die in droves and not return to your carriers for repair or try to escape. It seems every pilot in this game has a death wish.
- Forget about ever helping out an ally. One of your turrets/wingmen will accidentally hit a friend, immediately turning every ally in the vicinity hostile - which in turn will make your turrets/wingmen shoot and kill those. What starts out as helping an ally will basically always end with you accidentally declaring war on them. THE GAME DOES NOT HAVE INTELLIGENT FRIENDLY FIRE RECOGNITION. Oh, and if you are fighting and an ally flies in to help you - same thing happens.
- S/M ships can use highways, L/XL cannot (and without mods their travel mode takes ages to start), making travelling with L/XL ships a terrible PITA.
- The UI is some of the most clunky stuff I have ever seen, making EVE Online appear downright user friendly. Basically everything you want to do requires at least twice as many clicks as it should, especially if you are looking for information about anything.
- Most missions' rewards are so low that you will want to ignore them entirely. Only by the end-game, when you have a huge income, can you do missions that actually pay well for your time. But by that point, you'll be a major power already, so why even do missions anymore...
- The pilot banter is so horribly bad that it is actually funny (doubt that was intentional, though).
- So, so many bugs in everything from autopilot to UI. At least I only had it crash once in all my time...
