Thanks. Is that Morrowind? It doesn't even look like it when it's modded out the wazoo. (And trust me, I know personally what that looks like.)

That pic is literally MGE XE (draw distance, shaders, water) + Skies IV + Morrowind Watercolored (my version of the mod). It's vastly more faithful to the vanilla game than a mod compilation (or any compilation) like MGSO, just for the fact that the textures seen on the screenshots retain the same color as the originals.

Granted, watercolor is a hit and miss. You love it or hate it to death. Between this and whatever mod setup one can come up with (with generally has 100 different mods of vastly different qualities), I know what I'll stick with.

That might be it then. When I played with fuckton of mods, MGSO was one of them, so mine looked vastly different. I don't play with many mods anymore so that may be it though.

Fits the original style very well, imo looks better than the currently available "realistic" textures which meshes poorly with lowpoly vanilla models + crappy limited graphics engine (though soon to be changed due to OpenMW magic)
All texture mods for old games look like shit, this is no exception.

Lucas9 Was it you who did the Watercolor Patched version? If so, where did it go?

Had a small argument with PeterBitt through PMs, ended up asking him to host my patches instead on the original mod's page, so you can find the updated versions there.

A word of warning, though: so we could come to an agreement, the patches uploaded there follow the original Morrowind Watercolored settings. I don't use the brightness/contrast filter myself anymore, though. As Peter pointed out to me through PMs, it hurt the textures more than it helped the (few) that needed the tweaks.

That might be it then. When I played with fuckton of mods, MGSO was one of them, so mine looked vastly different. I don't play with many mods anymore so that may be it though.

Yep, I made the mistake of installing MGSO right away when I first installed Morrowind. Though I have to admit, I like some of the color variations of MGSO (particularly the Imperial buildings and Balmora).

Yeah, I thought that I would need it to be able to enjoy it, but then when I was forced to uninstall Morrowind for some reason (don't remember anymore) I didn't feel like reinstalling all my mods. Never went back, I like the way the game looks without mods and most gameplay mods aren't all that much better than the base, so I play pretty close to vanilla. Just a couple of mods like vampires don't suck and enchanting scrolls.

Is there an updated list of recommended mods somewhere? For a newbie?

For a newbie, I'd recommend none. Trust me, I was in your position a year and a half ago and I remember trying to find the right mods and all the hassle for a very non-Morrowind experience. If you do need some, the only one I've ever really played with was MGSO.

I have absolutely 0 interest in messing with the graphics or anything like that, but something that always bothered me about Morrowind was the combat. It is monkey anus. I was wondering if anyone knows a good combat mod for Morrowind and could they be so kind to link me to one?

I don't think there are any good ones that would have large impact on the combat, so:
  • Disable "always use best attack" to make the combat slightly more involved.
  • Play vanilla, but don't fight tired and put any offensive skills you intend to use as your primary skills and synergize them with your specialization and, if possible, race. Then you should hit fairly consistently.
  • If you must use a mod find Adul's Advanced Combat. It doesn't change much, but it builds upon vanilla mechanics in an interesting way, adding crit mechanics, bleeding, penalties for being low on health and sort of fighting modes. It's modular too. It does make combat much more lethal, though.

I have the regular Steam version of MW. Should I wait to play the game until I purchase the GOTY version?

I'm pretty sure the regular steam version is the goty edition. If not, the expansions don't matter yet, they are high level content anyway, you can just wait until you are ready to get them, the base game has enough to occupy for a while.
