Terak does make some good content but I agree he missed the mark here. Strongly disagree that he is just a grifter who copies Crowbcat.
In the end we never realized how much we'd miss Fampyrs, Vomatos and Ducumbers until they were gone. You can actually see the degradation of writing and dropping pretenses of trying to be "different and unique"
In dead fire all raw food items had different names than their real life counterpart in a histrionic attempt to be deep. Pineapple is crown fruit, Coconut is Palm stone etc
Here they dropped all pretenses and called the fruit and vegetables their real names. Tomato, Cucumber, Carrot, Cabbage, Potato
.. game is not out yet... it is only the early access period that you need to pay extra to get into13k peak CCU on Steam. Yeah even worse bomba than Pillars of Eternity 2 which had 22k peak ccc.
For those who don't know peak CCU on steam roughly translates into 1:10 ratio on pc sales and so far it is one of better statistic on sales in industry to the point where publishers are pushing valve to remove ccc numbers much like they did with sales.
So ~130k copies sold on pc.
*game will be released into gamepass later
Only giga paypigs who bought the $100 edition can play now, so the numbers are pretty meaningless. Wait for the normal release date to draw conclusions.13k peak CCU on Steam. Yeah even worse bomba than Pillars of Eternity 2 which had 22k peak ccc.

Thankfully as long as Dota and Counter Strike remain popular, Valve will leave them up so they can show off their playercount peen. For those who don't know peak CCU on steam roughly translates into 1:10 ratio on pc sales and so far it is one of better statistic on sales in industry to the point where publishers are pushing valve to remove ccc numbers much like they did with sales.

Like less than 10% of people who own Gamepass will play Avowed, and if they do it won't be for very long.Is people who are paying the highest value possible(US$90). With gamepass, my guess is that it will have much more players. My guess is that almost everyone who played Skyrim and owns gamepass will try this game.
This is why I don't like gamepass business model. Allow this types of games to become more successful...
Obsidian trend on steam:
34k - Stick of truth
44k - Pillars of Eternity 1
15k - Tyranny
22k - Pillars of Eternity 2
17k - Outer Worlds
31k - Grounded
2k. - Pentiment
13k - Avowed
PoE had gigantic media coverage since it was THE cRPG renaissance game. People who were waiting for the comeback of the genre flocked to it, as did people who never experienced it before and wanted to try it out.Obsidian trend on steam:

What about budget? I think that ought to factor in as well.
Still interesting that Tyranny and Pillars 2 failed so much compared to the first.
I don't think first POE setting up the follow ups to bomb is particularly "interesting", but your line of thinking would probably make you fit right in on the budgeting meetings for POE2.
MCA subverts CRPG narratives => success.
Soyer subverts CRPG mechanics => failure.
This was discussed multiple times. Even if someone was fabulously optimistic enough to believe the hype POE1 had (which was largely completely fake), you had an actual hard evidence in form of tranny + the poe dlc of what would, realistically, happen.I don't think first POE setting up the follow ups to bomb is particularly "interesting", but your line of thinking would probably make you fit right in on the budgeting meetings for POE2.
Obsidian had already established a certain reputation and fanbase with led to the success of the POE kickstarter, and while reception of POE 1 was not amazing it was still positive enough that you would think followup games are guaranteed to sell a certain amount. Which they never did.

It's not complicated, first game was mediocre so many people who played it were not interested in a sequel.Obsidian trend on steam:

Tyranny is not really surprising game was made for Paradox which is notoriously shit for marketing and they didn't spend shit for marketing. Even on this forum people were surprised that game existed.
POE2 being bomba imho has a lot to do with shitty management. For some fucking reason they decided that the most important thing is to have expensive voice acting and set game in pirate theme which never sells instead of giving people want they want, castles, sword and board and shit.

Too bad that sweet scent of ((freedom)) bucks easily corrupts people - CDPR or Owlcat being the best example of this.Poles will show dumb Californians how it's done - again.Tainted Grail can't be completed fast enough.

Avowed has already made over $10m in the bank during EA
Add the Gamepass payday
Add release sales
They're doing fine actually, bet they're stoked
