In my opinion, there are few things that made the outcry a lot different for two companies.
The timing, when Firedorn Saga happened, few people outside GG cared about SJWs and almost everyones reaction was "Its just a stupid poem, noone cares.". On the other hand Mizhena Saga comes at the time when there are a lot more people tired with the whole SJW bullshit, with the latest being the Overwatch ass controversy.
Reaction of Obsidian was done much better, instead of attacking or mocking their fans they simply shifted the blame from themselves and said it was authors decision to change and that they also didnt want to change it. I personally think thats bullshit but it was enough for majority of their fans.
Fans, while majority of Obsidian fans are long time followers who are willing to forgive companies mistakes as long they provide them with the games they will enjoy. Beamdog fans are not really their fans but fans of BG, and Beamdog already had a shaky relationship with them due poor releases of EE editions, inserting SJW politics was only the last drop that lead to outrage.
Personally I think Firedorn Saga is far greater wrongdoing. Obsidian shit on their fans due a complain of a random nutjob and for what, a shitty poem no sane person cared about.
As for Mizhena, I dont care about people putting trannies in games or preaching about values of diversity or any other SJW bullshit. Im all for freedom of speech and artistic freedom, if its your game you are free to do anything you want with it. So Im all for that SJW nonsense to stay in the game, but that wont stop me from saying its retarded, saying its poorly written and forced, and that I will not be buying it.
I have the impression that all the backlash Beamdog receives is actually a continuation of that "fight" that started with the PoE drama. In PoE the sjw-extremists won the fight by getting some harmless joke removed. Now, gg-extremists and associates are taking their chances to pay back this "wrong-doing" they received from PoE. I think that's actually the main reason why everything started to get that much out of control.
Beamdog not shutting their mouth wasn't helping either. That's something they have to learn from Obsidian even if it's a hard and an unfair lesson to learn.
aVENGER actually was cool enough to just answer technical/gameplay related questions here in a neutral tone.
Beamdog may not have delivered the best expansion people would have loved. Personally I see a lot of technical issues with the EE compared to the original (and mods), mainly the blurred gfx (why, just why?). But I don't think 1-star reviews, a metacritic score of 3.7 and all that shitstorm is something they deserve. It's just completely out of proportion.
Both of you are right, but people who only play CRPGs need to understand what's going on in the rest of world. Of course anyone who has been paying attention to SJW issues knows about this, but a lot of people don't, from the looks of it.
There is basically a social media
war going on, at the moment, between SJWs and their enemies within the gaming community. This issue, as said before, has become huge in recent years due to the perceived influence SJWs have on developers. To talk about the Blizzard example a week ago in a bit of detail, they were forced to remove this from their game:
Yeah, that way of standing, right there, offended feminists enough for SJWs to pressure Blizzard into removing it. Anita Sarkeesian personally wrote that the game is sexist, and that's basically the last shit you want to have happen for a company that wants a "politically correct" image in today's social media. Even though Blizzard has gone to shit in recent years, the fact that this massive company, at the heart of Western gaming, is in retreat before SJWs, has a lot of people angry.
But it doesn't end there. Around the same time as Blizzard's fall back, we had this:
http://www.gamezone.com/originals/o...-japan-with-star-ocean-5-and-it-s-not-ok-jzlw
Now we all know how much the animu fans love that shit, so the fact that Western feminists and SJWs are spreading their beliefs to Japanese game developers also has that community angry.
Combine the other recent advances made by SJWs, including
http://blogjob.com/oneangrygamer/20...ees-gamers-angry-with-sjws-for-ruining-gaming,
http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Mi...DC-Party-With-Scantily-Clad-Women-125707.html,
https://gamingreinvented.com/news/dead-or-alive-extreme-3-is-japan-only-because-of-sjws, and you have the idea, in people's heads, that there is a massive attack against media freedom in the West by feminism gone mad, though in a lot of ways, this "new feminism" has more in common with moral censorship than it does with actual liberalism.
Into this war jumps the writer of Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear, declared member of the SJW movement, who represents all that people have come to hate about the movement. It's the equivalent of painting a target on your back and saying "LOOK AT ME, GAMERS! SEE WHAT I HAVE DONE WITH YOUR SEXIST FIFTEEN YEAR OLD GAME! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?"
So of course the media jumped right on it. Of course the angry community of gamers took the fight. Of course this all became bigger than little Beamdog ever thought it'd become. They effectively offered themselves up to be the new battle field, and regardless of the fact that the SJW in Siege of Dragonspear is a lot less than that in those other examples, regardless of the fact that this community is a lot smaller than the ones involved in the bigger SJW conflicts... If you build it, they will come.
