Probably the best Divinity game up to date, and the worst Baldur's Gate (excluding Dragonspear). Overall, decently fun.
Writing is significantly improved over other Larian games, to the extend it feels completely different. Dialogues are decently written and also have great voice acting. However, character presentation is very much hit-or-miss. There are some affable ones, but it somewhat feels like a "freak show" of both a party and also NPCs in general way too often.
Story so far available (up to Grymforge) is alright, but doesn't take off much yet, quests are somewhat generic, but not boring. Equipment variety and character development are still limited, but they seem to be up to a good start.
Audiovisuals are wonderful, aside from not that good character presentation everything else looks stunning, environments are almost real fantasy. The only location I dislike is the Underdark. It is significantly too bright. Feels like outside during cloudy evening more than dark caves. Nonetheless, the rest of available locations look wonderful and eye-catching. Music is pleasant to listen to during gameplay.
Turn-based combat is quite well executed too, even more combat-heavy locations are enjoyable to play. It is not noticeably too repetitive, diverse enough, and can be satisfyingly challenging. In some aspects it improves upon real-time-with-pause combat of the originals, where playing warrior-type characters was too boring, but on the other hand, now everybody plays more like traditional spellcasting classes. Hence I cannot say it is definitely better. It could still be improved upon.
In all, in every aspect the game is considerably inferior to the original Baldur's Gate and its sequel aside from combat. While probably the best of Larian games, it does not have the same atmosphere or gameplay as the series it is a continuation of. BG3 is a Divinity: Original Sin 3 D&D Edition, not a Baldur's Gate.
If you enjoyed Cyseal in D:OS as much as I did and want more and better, you will most likely enjoy BG3, but if you expect a proper Baldur's Gate then you'll be deeply disappointed.
