fuck off. bg1 companions were mostly ok. "let's go kill some bandits" "sure"
bg1 companions were barely companions
Their personality was a portrait, their class, their alignment, a clear motivation, a few lines of banter, a unique feature and a few checkmarks off a trait list. The player filled in the rest with their imagination.

That is what made them enjoyable. I'd take that any day over some gay vampire elf, who tells me how much of an insufferable faggot he is during numerous cutscenes.

No, they'll still leave and even attack you based on your choices.
Take no chances, attack them first.
Dont worry Astarion will get sliced and diced every fucking opportunity!
Larian has to know people love killing Astarion.

Outside of the usual shanking, he has by far the most ways you can kill/get rid of him in scripted sequences.

You can stake him to perma-kill him (at least in the EA)
You can also sell him out to a Monster Hunter into slavery or whatever

BG3 companions annoying codexians is a big W. Thanks.

LOL. But here is a hard question. In any RPG, ever, there is any companion universally liked by Codex? I never saw in any other place, people hating Aerie in BG2 and Leliana in DA:O. The unique really shit companion is Astarion. All others are from tolerable to ok.

But here is a hot take about people who complain about TB. UnderRail and Knights of the Chalice 2 would be UNplayable if where RtWP. RtWP can work for more action focused games like nwn1/2 but would't work in a more tactical game.

Hear, hear!
Just some banter on the side and good old D&D adventuring. Granted, not all companions were useful, but each had their own backstory.

Cryomancer Aerie does have that Cleric/Mage multiclass thing going for her, she has a wide repertoire of spells, both Arcane and Divine, but her personality and near constant whining are absolutely insufferable and one might be inclined to cut her fucking head off and dump her in a sewer.

Kivan is still better than most nu RPG companions.

You know a companion sucks when they have a strong class and stats but you still don't want to take them because you can't stand to listen to their drama. Do they have a stfu Aerie mod? I'd take that.

1st BG? Branwen certainly. Kivan also is a good one. Yeslik is a nice fellow, also has an interesting backstory closely tied to the plot.

Really, there are a lot of great companions.
Anomen - Sure, he is quite a douche, but he can buff himself like crazy and charge into the fray while wielding a good blunt weapon. Really effective party member.
Jan - Awesome companion, full stop. Despite being a gnome and his crazy stories (invented by him as a result of boredom, most likely), he is a fucking monster in the late game. Once he gets access to the Use Any Item HLA and some high level spells, you will see why.
Imoen - Can she be annoying? Yes. Is she a dual classed Thief/Mage and has all the power of a Mage while having Thief skills like Find/Disarm Traps? Also yes.
