So the good alignment companions was fake news?
No, they were always planned - a tiefling donut steel and a halfling if I remember right (also, Minsc). I'm already annoyed that they re-wrote your initial companions, though.

I really liked the early EA versions of them. It sold the whole "we ARE working together" forced party narrative. They were supposed to be evil cunts + gale with 1-2 good ones added later.

What did they change about the companions? I haven't played since the release of EA

Only difference I've noticed is that you can now save Shadowheart in the prologue, which makes her a little nicer to you later.

So if I understand this right the only rogue is that incredibly cringe vamp companion?!
I wonder if mods can fix it or if I should just accept that I wont have a lockpicker for my entire playthrough :(
Then again with a Larian game I probably wont need one as they love to create so many ways to solve everything I tend to just stumble from one objective to the next like I did in DOS2 without ever feeling like I solved anything and more just drunkenly fell through the plot somehow.

Their reactions have been nerfed. They don't get as anxious as before if you decide to do a side quest or two. There seems to be a better "bonding" dynamic now, or at least Shadowheart and the Frog don't fight as often as they did. Companions are more receptive and reactive to stuff in the environment now, though.

So.. wait.. npcs won't leave you if you piss them off? Fuck off. That was a part of BG. I absolutely loved it when the 'good' Minsc' got so pissed off at me and tried to murder me because I didnt rescue his lover within a couple of days of meeting him. Killed him in SELF DEFENSE, rescued her, and banged her for a whole while being the hero that saved the Sword Coast. If only he had been patient instead of focusing on trying to get a fukkin' hamster in bed.

Also, who doesnt find the whole Khalid-Jaheira/Montaro/Xzar rumble great?

Party members should NOT be robots.

No, they'll still leave and even attack you based on your choices. Swen's even made a point of saying you can chunk Minsc and Jaheira since they can end up hostile to you and you can piss off companions in early access enough that they'll try to kill you.

Party members being robots is Pillars of Eternity because I AM VERY ANGRY ABOUT PILLARS OF ETERNITY. At least there was a little more conflict in Deadfire.

A little? She's practically kissing your ass after that compared to vanilla. She should at least have a bit of distrust, though you can still get on her bad side anyway.

It's 5e so you don't need a rogue to pick locks. You can use Shadowheart for this task with a similar effect.

Ah, thank you for the clarification as I know nothing about 5e.
Well thats good at least. I always hated having to bring specific characters for skill reasons when they dont fit my RP headcanon for the particular run Im doing as good/evil/murderhobo/charmer etc.

bg1 companions were barely companions

If you include their written biographies and gave them some more interjections in quests, I think they’re almost perfect. They’ve got just enough personality, they fit in the world and they don’t turn the game into a telenovela.
Best of all, there are enough of them for you to actually take casualties and not save scum. Like a real D&D campaign where someone gets killed and they play a new character. You end up telling the story of whomever getting eaten by trolls forever.

Modern games never want to tolerate their precious companions getting killed.
