Could he really easily quit and go freelance, though? Most of his years in Obsidian, narrative-heavy games that need a lot of writers weren't really much of a thing. It was all either dudebro cover-based shooters or 3rd person action-adventure games.
It's only couple of years ago when narrative games exploded on the market and studios started seriously caring about storylines and writing and companions and all that stuff.
