Your honeymoon will be over the moment you run into the first "this can't be opened" door and try to beat up the first NPC that you should logically be able to beat up to resolve a quest.
You know it's a 10/10 game when the worst criticism levied against it are nitpicks like these. "Oh no there's like, 10 doors in the game that you cannot just open, you need to wait for a quest trigger! Shit gaem!!!!" Jesus
Except the nitpicks are not the worst criticism to throw at it. The abysmal quest design, especially in the city, as well as just about everything related to the city except for its impress size and layout, is by far the biggest one.

I love Gothic 1 and 2 more than most people, but you have to be looking through some seriously rose-tinted glasses to think their quest design is leaps and bounds above what you find in Archolos.

Never has any Gothic or even any Risen or any ELEX forced me to follow WALKING npcs three times back and forth through two city districts to resolve some quest. That alone is enough to put them leaps and bounds above what you find in Archolos.

This is your typical side quest in Archolos:
"Marvin, I need you to find X/mop the floor/ fetch this / collect this/ send this letter at Y location"
" Rozumien"
-> Quest completed : 100XP + 10 gold pieces or 10XP + 100 gold pieces.
Literally Gothic 3/ MMO tier minus reputation ++.
This type of quest design deserves damnatio memoræ in my book.

Pff, weak sauce.

One of the Gothic 3 endings was a 30 minute escort quest, slow-walking a dude across the entire continent. :obviously:

I found the quests in the city perfectly fine.

I guess you're impatient or something? I found those pretty charming, the NPC chatting with you along the way and shit.

I adore this game, but it's hard to argue that in trying to one-up Gothic 2's quest design, the result is not all that satisfying. Many times you can almost see the rails.

This extends to the main quest, where having a player character with a big emotional stake doesn't really gel with the Gothic formula of open-ended gameplay. Marvin insists on the urgency of it, but I just want to see what's in this cave.

Other than that, this game is fucking awesome.

Edit: not to say there aren't good quests. Those which rely on the player's attention to detail and exploratory skills. Those are great.

Reminder that roxxor criticizes (or praises) games for KKK, you could predict any of his reviews opinion by thinking "what opinion would generate more KKK?"

Yeah, doesn't mean he's always wrong, but let's be honest - he's a populist, and on 'dex that means "i need to shit on it" usually.

He either goes with the popular opinion at/before release or if the general opinion is really strong he goes against it - for the wow! shocking! effect (both in forum posts and reviews)

There is no way a person could coincide this much with KKK, every person has their quirks.

It might be somewhat unconscious though (like the general opinion shaping his feelings with need to be adored or something).

His Risen 2 review was basically "I don't like it because uhhh is bad and I don't like it!" No objective reasons given.

Although I'll be honest, I stopped reading his reviews long time ago, so maybe he has changed and I haven't noticed.

That said, autism is strong with this one. Roxor probably likes ELEX more than Archolos lmao

Contrarians always come out of the woodwork when something is genuinely good and well loved. They need to feed their dunning kruger somehow.

Anyway when does the hard mode come out, anyone know? I'm hankering for a second playthrough.

Indeed, the comparison between ELEX quest design and Archolos quest design is ridiculous considering how immensely better it is in ELEX.

I'll have to wait to get to the big city and see for myself but I learned to take Rox' hot takes with a pinch of salt.

Last year he thundered Elex 2 is dramatically, fundamentally different and worse than E1, I played it two weeks ago and the game is p. much indistinguishable from the prequel.

So far Archolos is a ridiculous blast.

P.S.: Btw I suppose these Potatos take donations? Anything I should know? I don't wanna send 50 bux somewhere only to learn the team has disbanded a year ago and the bank account now belongs to some lawyer firm.

Done, 110 hours and I haven't even completed a few quests, including the Grayson one, which, apparently is super long.

Hooly shit what a ride. Who would've thunk the best PB game by far wouldn't be made by PB at all.

Ok let's get the nitpicks out of the way first. I guess the inventory is the biggest fly in the ointment. Not huge, not small either. Shit like that is fine in G1 with its grand total of eleven and half items but in Archolos, with hundreds of items, it was kindda grating. There IS some sorting, it's not a total mess, but it's not reliable. Also quick keys for healing and mana potions would be nice. Well at least there are some for spells and the map.

What else...Maybe it's me but it seemed they jazzed up the graphix with nefwangled postprocessing, vegetation and shit? I feel the original G2 graphics, without any mods, was clearer, everything was easier to see. In Archolos you kindda have to run around with Telekinesis activated at all times or you'll just miss half the shit lying on the ground.

Also maybe the game is too long? Too much shit to do, too many side quests? But that's all subjective. I bet for many it's not long enough plus most of the stuff is optional. Also there were some bugs, had about 5 crashes, frequent sound glitches and the endgame Ulryk fight bugged out for me, had to Marvin myself out of the jam.

As for what I loved....p. much everything else. It's Gothic but bigger and better than any PB ever. Game is a stunning achievement. I had no idea shit like this was being developed, let alone it'd be so momentous. It's the ultimate Gothic and one of the best RPGs ever made. Regular dev studios would be retarded not to immediately hire whoever was responsible for it.

Oh, one more beef - not sure I'll be able to replay G2 without constantly thinking Archolos did XYZ better.

This is very true. I was actually unable to run Archolos on the rig I play previous Gothics on lol mostly due to particle effects

Where is the update that makes this mess acceptable? Other than a patch called "uninstall.exe", because I've already tried that one and it doesn't help with a bunch of very disappointing people who will not shut up about how this crap is somehow on the level of G2.

Sometimes I feel like I've played another game when said game throws at you, tons of unimportant and poorly designed fetch quests to fill the content, terrible escort missions just to simply annoy you, almost non-Existent C&C, but nobody notices it or prefer to pretend it doesn't exist.
Oh, and don't forget every annoying tidbits here and there just to remind you that it's a video game and not a real world like forever closed doors until you have advanced enough into the railroaded main quest, or the scripted sequences.
Then I remind myself how hard Bethesda got tackled for implementing all these flaws into their games after and including Oblivion. Well it turns out you simply need not to be Bethesda in name and hardcore elitists praise your game like the new Skyrim. Because yes Chronicles of Myrtana feels like Skyrim in a lot of ways.

Do I need to play another Gothic game to get anything out of this? Would this be a good introduction to the series?
Never played any of the Gothic series but they've been in my steam library for what seems like forever.

This is a good mod, but it's hard to recommend if you haven't played Gothic 1-2.
Gothic has tanky controls that are either loved or hated, and this mod doesn't improve those controls, so it suffers from similar shortcomings.
