Yeah how is this less ghey? Id settle for leaders which better styles that dont look like pixar cartoons. Whichever civ had the costumes change with the age was a nice touch, too.

The thing Id really like is a thing Ill never get, however - back in Civ 1 they had a zoomed in, detailed view of your city, that showed your granary and barracks and any wonders you had. I know they sort of do this now on the main strategic layer but it really added a cool other perspective on your cities as they grew.

Honestly that shit started with III.
II despite its graphics had a pretty serious and somber mood.
III, IV and V had a reasonably serious tone. You can argue that leaders had a more "artistic" style to them in V, but at least they don't look like cartoon characters as they do in VI. I have no hopes that VII will divert from this course. Despite thousands of hours in II-V, I am yet to touch VI even if I have it and most of the DLCs in my Steam library lol, mainly due to the art style putting me off so much.

5 is pretty good with all of its expansions, it fleshes out stuff like religion further than 4 ever did. Vanilla 5 is crap, pure and simple, a complete bore to play.

I actually prefer GK civ to brave new world. Ai was aggressive and the game wasn't tailored toward a small amount of cities.

I agree that GK was the better expansion, yes. BNW was very enjoyable to play, but mostly because GK laid a great foundation.

That being said, nowadays I can't play it without Vox Populi installed. It brings so many changes, starting with AI, to radically expanding religion, trade, and other core mechanics as to make it a sort-of both-of-both-worlds mix between IV and V that there's little reason for me to go back

Interesting, am I missing something, or Vox Populi isn't on Steam Workshop? I was hoping for a hassle-free one click install.

Just download the installer from here:
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/community-patch-how-to-install.528034/
For steam the only good mod is the Gaia mod and its various offshoots, but that requires tweaking and multiple installs to get running.

FFS, they could just consistently call it Vox Populi, rather than randomly switching to "community patch".
Thanks. I'll see what it's all about once I unglue myself from Sailwind. Wonder if it actually makes single player enjoyable. Especially unfucking happiness and the AI could open the game up a bit for me.

IIRC the happiness gets divided into a few factors that are then combined, so you can raise "security" happiness by building barracks and so on.
As for the AI, on higher difficulties with this mod enemy civilizations will build SO. MUCH. TROOPS. Wars were very slow, from what I remember, if there's any sort of tech parity. And if there's no tech parity, and you are far ahead, why even go to war? Just continue developing and continue being far ahead.

You know, I wanted to say that it feels like the games have been getting worse with each release but then I saw this:

That's thanks to Steam's mod support not being really up to snuff for such large mods. On Civdanatics you'll find both the installer so you can run it via the mod menu, but also packs to run it in multiplayer/the regular Singleplayer game launcher [prettier, and less cumbersome imho]
