Kind reminder that this was the result of the vote conducted on the codex platform, with no external interference:

This isn't such a bad list man. Maybe your top1 isn't the same as the one on the list, and mine isn't either, but the list is ok.

How is that a GOTY vote when games have different release dates?

So, i didn't play any of them, except of 15 minutes of Naheulbeuk's retarded prologue/tutorial.

I'm tempted to vote for Wasteland 3 but i'll rather boycott the vote since KotC 2 Augury of Chaos isn't there.

Age of decadence, NEO, shadowrun and underrail would never make it top 10 on any other user vote based site.

I don't see any issues here. Codexians rule.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps has open world exploration, character development, side quests, swords, bows and fireballs, so it is an RPG, and yet it is missing from the poll. If not for that it would win bigly! I demand a full forensic audit of this poll and I would like to mention that I am already filing multiple lawsuits against this rampant, widespread fraud.

I thought you didn't like metroidvanias.

But what if you like metroidvanias as a genre?

Whats defines a Metroidvania?
Well, it's quite easy actually:
- Side-scrolling perspective;
- Real-time combat and platforming (or a similar traversal mechanic);
- Character upgrades that improve combat and/or platforming abilities;
- Non-linear progression in some way dependent on getting upgrades.

Having RPG elements, in addition to the metroid-like structure and gatekeeping.

PS: What V_R describes is a metroid-like. You need RPG elements (character building, equipment, leveling...) to make it a metroidvania.

Good effort but that would make Super Mario World a Metroidvania and Castlevania Curse of Darnkness not one.

Better, but by your adoption of most of his categorization Curse of Darkness would still not be a metroidvania, and any game that functioned nearly the same as symphony of the night but did not feature the RPG elements would not be. What RPG elements *are* would also be still debatable.

The point I am making is that "Genre" is a categorization that is purposefully vague, in fact we would probably all three find that most of the examples we would point to as a Metroidvania would be the same but on the Edges this would stop. It's the same with the RPG question, a Genre is merely a recognition of patterns that helps those using the categorization to speed up an identification process.

It must have boundaries, otherwise every game would be in a genre but can not be rigid either, as the only objective facts would only recognize one group, the individual. Genre *must* be subjective to have any purpose and we know the answer in this forum by voting (at this point) ~68% against recognizing Cyberpunk as an RPG and a not insubstantial amount of people (~30%) recognizing as one. (this would not be the same, if we asked if super mario world is an RPG, most likely)

So, the only thing that matters is understanding of the category *and* the term, a genre is subjective, always in flux and is based on a reliable way of understanding of a pattern in a social context.

The answer to the question "is Cyberpunk an RPG?" should be no, least not on the codex.

EDIT: I reconsidered the two "yes" option in the poll as well, it actually is pretty worthwhile, the second yes option shows the shift in the perception.

That's the point. It would be a metroid-like, not a metroidvania.

And I guess being a side-scroller isn't mandatory to be a metroid-like or metroidvania, like being first person isn't mandatory to be an immersive-sim (it's just that we are used to games of the genre to be it).
So yes, Curse of Darkness is a metroidvania, you can relax. :D
