Strap Yourselves In Pathfinder: Wrath
Better, but by your adoption of most of his categorization Curse of Darkness would still not be a metroidvania, and any game that functioned nearly the same as symphony of the night but did not feature the RPG elements would not be.
That's the point. It would be a metroid-like, not a metroidvania.

And I guess being a side-scroller isn't mandatory to be a metroid-like or metroidvania, like being first person isn't mandatory to be an immersive-sim (it's just that we are used to games of the genre to be it).
So yes, Curse of Darkness is a metroidvania, you can relax. :D

I am very much relaxed. But you made my point, you can always reshuffle or renegotiate what is part of a genre and what is not. It is still a very malleable category.

Good effort but that would make Super Mario World a Metroidvania and Castlevania Curse of Darnkness not one.
I haven't played either of those. From what I can google, Curse of Darkness has levelling and different weapons, which certainly qualifies as character upgrades - but what makes it questionable as metroidvania is that it's full 3D rather than side-scrolling. But that said, there's a case to be made for 3D metroidvanias as well (I have previously argues that Dark Souls is one, for example), it's just not the normative definition of the genre.
SPM, as far as I can tell, doesn't have action combat beyond the usual jumping on enemies.
You need RPG elements (character building, equipment, leveling...)
Which fall under "character upgrades". The term "metroid-like" doesn't exist.
I'm generally opposed to limiting metroidvanias to SotN-likes. Simon's Quest is a better origin point on the Castlevania lineage - it precedes SotN by a decade (which makes it conetmporaneous with Metroid) and features most of SotN's traits already, except for stats.

Yeah, but no. Finding upgrades and leveling up to gain upgrades aren't the same thing. Finding items giving gamechanging abilities mandatory to overcome obstacles and finding just another sword or helmet with differents stats aren't the same either. Metroid-likes have only the former, metroidvanias have both.

It should, then.

How's the translation of Troubleshooter? I heard it was garbage-tier, but the rest of the game looks interesting.

That Troubleshooter and Wasteland are the top rated when they're nuXcom clones is kind of hilarious in hindsight.

I can't comment about Wasteland 3, but Troubleshooter does enough of its own thing with the way it handles turns, pretty rewarding skill system, mission variety and throwing huge numbers of enemies against player that it doesn't feel too much nuXCOM derivative.

Since RPG is meaningless anyway, I'll happily slap the label onto turn-based isometric tactical games and hope the genre goes in that direction, rather than the FPS action dogshit decline.

I've always thought of SRPGs as the closest to a tabletop wargame-rpg setup, sorta, they have the potential for better combat than twitcher RTS shit or blobbers if they're designed well enough.

WHAT IS AN RPG aside, Cyberpunk and Wasteland 3 are the only games on that list I'm aware of having any interest in, so it is what it is really.
I dunno, look up the thread topic on the forums, that's what a lot of people were calling the combat trashing it while saying the devs were uninspired shits, funny enough.

Deus Ex is not an RPG though :buildawall:
Doesn't matter. Any video game top list you make, Deus Ex should make the top spot, regardless of whether it fits the criteria. Top 10 RTS? Deus Ex at #1. Top 25 platformers for the Super Nintendo? Deus Ex at #1. Top 15 Ultima clones for the ZX Spectrum? Deus Ex at #1. It's just the way things are.

Sure, it's my 2nd favorite game of all time too. It's not an RPG though.

If asscreed could be seen as rpg, then so can a great game from 20 year ago :). It has levelling skills and it has C&C.
Come on mate, you are better than that. Asscreed is seen as an rpg by dum dums, not by sophisticated gentlemen of Le Codeux.
