The big problem for me was that levels didn't get sufficiently large and complex until the last 2 stages, and level design itself got smart enough to make Blink less powerful and much more limited (i.e. providing lots of cover but not letting you transition between rooms without exposing yourself). Also, since levels are designed with Blink in mind there are few true alternatives to not using it, other than maybe throwing objects as distractions. Without Blink you are left with very bare-bones and basic stealth, which really should have been augmented with light and shadow mechanics.

The level design is really thought-out, but it does seem focused on allowing you to exploit blink as much as possible for the first half of the game. Maybe I will find a ghost playthrough more challenging toward the end then.

Except it is.

The main problem with stealth isn't lack of light&shadow mechanics, but combination of poor AI that can't even search properly and very poor detection ranges.

As for blink, I'd functionally replace it with some sort of mundane aimed jump with similar interface, but allowing enemy to detect you in mid-air and taking more time. Possibly slightly noisy.

The blink itself would be turned into more powerful teleport spell with actual mana cost.

I'm doing a total non-lethal, ghost and no powers run of this right now. Not really for the achievements, which no one care's about, but more just for fun. I have to say, it really shows some of the game's faults.

So you are one of these who gimped his enjoyment from playing game about assassin by not killing anyone... Are you sure you wanted to play this game?

I usually play stealth games as a backstabbing assassin type, and my first playthrough of Dishonored was as that. The problem is even if you stealth the whole game you still get the chaos ending if you kill people, so to see the game in low chaos I was going to be avoiding killing anyway. I figured I might as well try a non-lethal playthrough and see how it effects the gameplay.

I wasn't shy to kill people and I finished it on low chaos ending. Not being jerk helps a lot. Also that mission in that mansion could be finished without killing anyone, and on ghost. So there are plenty of situation that reduce chaos a lot. In addition not allowing to ring alarms helps immensely.

In retrospective after completing Dishonored I find playing it as a stealth game quite pointless. AI is simply braindead and broken and you are given the ultimate joke-spell which makes it even easier. Dishonored is much better FPP melee game than stealth, same as Dark Messiah. They both have excellent and creative ways to use physics in melee combat and their stealth mechanics suck terribly.

Playing it as Nightcrawler is way more fun and the existence of blink is somewhat justifiable.

Yeah, all the interesting gadgets are for a lethal playthrough. I think that Dark Messiah is better, because enemies could kill you very fast on the hardest difficulty and there wasn't loads of instant health potions, and the only overpowered power you had was the power of the boot(at least from what I remember), Dishonored is a walk in the park in comparison.

I went through backstabbing everyone because that is what I enjoy. It goes high chaos. Now I am doing a low chaos playthrough and figured I might as well do non-lethal and see how it works out.

Why you care so much about my motivations is beyond me.

It can be fun in pure action mode, I have a playthrough for that method. I do think it is designed for stealth and more fun that way though, easy or not.

I would love a stealth game set in medieval Japan. You had the Tenchu series and, erm, that's it?
Also yeah, folks at Arkane are far from being stupid. :salute:

Sure, why not?

But it's surely better to succeed at making an interesting original setting than to fail at historical one.

Apart from coding AI, balancing awesome buttons and some decisions regarding lighting and texturing I'd actually consider them pretty smart.

I really hope Dishonored 2 is set somewhere else... one of the many other islands or cities mentioned in Dishonored perhaps, or some place wholly different. An ancient Japan inspired setting would be awesome.

It will probably be Dunwall again though.

One that would be capable of reading comprehension.
A person better versed in English, would know I implied there is no AI in the Dishonored. Should I assume it's too difficult for you?

A person capable of reading comprehension would have picked up on my mentions of enemies being dumber than bag of bricks in their investigation attempts.
