Yeah, the slow start was entirely due to the lack of real press. It looks like it's recovering nicely though. I'm going with the $65 package myself and I wouldn't be shocked if this thing reached a cool million by the end.

I have noticed a tendency from the smaller RPG developers to group RPGWatch in the same category as the Codex, even though they're a much smaller site. They have a sort of "important site" reputation that they don't entirely deserve.

I wonder why that is. Did RPGWatch used to be bigger than it is today? Do they just gain attention by default due to being a kind of SFW version of the Codex?

The Watch was a split off of that fairly huge RPG website from years ago.... which name is escaping me at the moment.

Fun fact when Larian posted RPG Watch came to their office on Facebook the first comment said they should have invited RPG Codex instead.

If you look at the "press landscape" in general, I would think most PR people lump Watch, Codex, GameBanshee etc all in one group as "niche RPG sites" regardless of relative sizes. And I dunno if that's unjustified, I mean, looking at the Torment dashboard, the Codex's not even registered on a list showing from .5% upwards (nor are Watch or GB), while Escapist, Joystiq, Reddit, Kicktraq, Something Awful and NeoGAF all are. Referrals aren't a perfect tool for tracking this though, especially since the Codex likely has a lot of folks that went to it directly (direct traffic and Kickstarter internal make up about half the pledges)

Also, to be fair to Larian, they did say they did not do it so much because of RPGWatch specifically as because they feared the Watch post would lead to an immediate cascade (a misestimation, looking at things now). Still a mistake, probably, but that reasoning is a little more understandable.

Divinity: Original Sin Wasteland 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Oh fuck...I'm broke. I mean I could afford the 25 tier if I sold my ass, but I really want this game in a box. And right now $65+12 is too much for me. Especially, that it just feels stupid to get the boxed European game shipped from US, when I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get it in Europe...and for much less. I really don't knew what to do...there just couldn't be a worse moment for this kickstarter from my perspective...:(

Pledge for the 25$ tier, and then when you have some spare cash buy the boxed edition and never open it.

Watch does stuff like awards and all and that regurlaly, and they don't have all the bad press that Codex or NMA has... you know, everytime Codexia is mentioned on the outside forums, someone always post some random hate "RPG Codex, those arrogant pricks?" or the likes... meanwhile, people's reaction to Watch is like ______.

Hopefully Sven is looking at the number of backer referred from the codex. ;)

Actually. The referrer thing has RPGWatch beat Codex... If you really wanna know... It wasn't so much RPGWatch's article. It was our idea that, if RPGWatch goes online, maybe the others will follow. Apparently that wasn't true.

I didn't say Codex was a tiny blip. But Watch comes just right in front of you. Tiny difference, but still.

Thanks for the info ForkTong. I was very curious how the traffic was arriving. Obviously we will fall off the map once neogaf, SA, RPS etc.. have newsposts.

That's not totally surprising that the codex isn't high up on the referrals list, and I've seen other projects post their stats and that was the case, too. I'm pretty surprised that RPGWatch is beaing the codex here, though. At the very least, the forums here are many times more active than theirs, if that's any indication of traffic levels.

Wishing ForkTongue and team good luck with all of this, though. I've been a fan of yours since the original Divine Divnity. :salute:

It is a fact that the Codex has a lot more traffic, at least twice as much as RPGWatch does or maybe even more. Our frontpage gets tens of thousands of views. So that just means RPGWatch are, on average, bigger Larian fans. :P

(Which isn't too surprising because if you look at their forums RPGWatch is a much more homogeneous community; the Codex, on the other hand, has a lot of diverse groups of people liking widely different things. Or so is my impression.)
