Thats nice but I saw a few times (in shops) a two hander with 40% life steal and something like +11/+7 or similar. Couldnt ever afford it but man, 40% life steal? Thats game ender right there.

You seen, but I bought for my paladin a sword +11 attack, and with berserk +3 or +5. Then once he was hit and became berserk. He had attack 28 or so. It was named a sword of insanity. BTW he had regen and was rather defensive. Is 11 or 12 defense a lot? In chain?

Is the game balanced for all map sizes in custom? I really want to play a colossal map but I'm scared everything will go to shit with that many provinces.
i dont know what do you mean, but balance between units/spells/heroes is calculated for "expert" difficulty.so if you want more balanced game-play on expert,no matter how big is the map size
40% life steal? Thats game ender right there.
bow +17 or hydra egg and game ender right there;)

Best two-handers

Immortal's Sword
13/11
Regeneration +4

Spear of Destiny
5/7
+2 attack (army)
+2 counter (army)

v.s. bows that give +17 to ranged attack, with magic damage on top of that.

I only play on expert. What i mean is that maybe a game on the largest map doesnt function as intended due to it not being balanced correctly for such large maps

balance is the thing between two or more parameters/objects/etc
so if we can compare heroes/stats/loot/buildings/spells/etc, we can talk about balance between them.thats why i cant answer,a map size itself is nothing compare to.
ingame mechanics works fine(function as intended :)) ,nothing changes.more heroes more gold more devastating weapons units and spels.
tell you one thing-AI is not be able to keep his units alive.so the longer the game the more advantage you get with your three-medal-veterans.at medium sized maps AI(on highest difficulty levels) can surprise you high tier units&spells but when do you get access to them yourself-AI has no chance.
beware of the routine management of 8 heroes.and if you want more tough neutrals for you and your opponents-leave more room between players,8-12 opponents is enough.you can also add more water to get islands and land bridges.
also you can create an open map, without fog of war by disabling "exploration" button.

gog.com has released an official hotfix yesterday. some users complain it did not fix a crash when plundering a province into extinction. I am wondering, what are your own experiences? I couldn't reproduce it, provinces are looted out just fine.

NB: if dialog.var had already been replaced via unofficial hotfix from eador.com, the patch won't install - or that particular file won't be overwriten, anyway. either way, for the past 10 days, the file on eador.com is more or less identical to the one in patch. but if you downloaded the eador.com hotfix before 10 december, it may still be faulty.

Picked this up a week ago, absolutely glorious game.

High level pure warriors are a blast to solo with, my last one found an outrageously powerful sword (+7 attack, +7 counterattack, +4 precise strike AND first strike!) in a dragon's nest and beasted the rest of the shard. Will have to try some other hero builds soon.

there is also a 1h version of this weapon, through it only gives 30% lifesteal but it still makes it my favorite weapon

So far, 20 shards conquered, 2 shards surrendered, 2 masters killed. Zarr just told me about his dream of making a machine. how much of the campaign is left?

Do spellcasters ever become viable? I managed to conquer one shard with a horde of zombies, but frankly it was a pain in the ass and towards the end I replaced half of them with gargoyles anyways. Whats the point of having 3rd circle spell slots if you can't actually get those spells without lucking your way into them (and then they'll almost certainly be the wrong ones anyways.) Even with just default shop gear a warrior plows through pretty much anything with high weapon/armor mastery.

16 masters are present,so count.when you will meet all of them-the end is near.

6 met, so 10 to go. Damn, this campaign is long.

Zarr asked me to retrieve some sort of cog from the shard I'm invading right now, but things are going terribly on it. Would it kill me to just surrender the shard and forget about the cog?

it's no big deal - you only get some minor bonus (200 en i think) for that artifact.

Well, I havent found or seen a shield that would be worth limiting yourself to 1H, have you? The best I found was +2 def/+2 rang def/+2 resistance which is nice but not as nice as the extra punch 2H provides.

If you're speaking with respect to the campaign, you're right in that their viability is a bit limited because you don't have access to the buildings for higher level spells. You can still get the odd spell from a scroll drop or through a neutral shop, but those options pale in comparison to allying with some centaurs for access to T2 units early on in the campaign.

In a skirmish game, however, you have every building unlocked, so wizards are only weak in the sense that they're a pain in the ass to develop early on because they require infrastructure to be in place that you can't really focus on/afford in the early game.

The dragon set shield, possibly. Though not sure if I'd put that on a warrior on the first place, so...

I found the mass plague scroll in a shop, cost was over 6000 gold so I'm not sure if its viable to buy them.

You guys speak of alliances, I have never managed to form one - quests from neutrals are usually impossible like the golden hammer for dwarves (how to find it, where to search for one?) killing ogres for centaurs (finding six is hard, killing them even more so). Do I need some special skills to form an alliance or is it about those quests?

Huh, turn 34 or so and it seems I've just won. A lil bit anticlimactic (and a lil bit soiled by text not fitting in its windows), but a win nonetheless. A piece of advice in a spoiler box, if you don't want to accidentally a whole campaign (like I did).
If you're going for the keys of truth, you probably don't want to use your mad persuasion skillz after getting the first (last) one. It ends the game, or at least it ended mine.

Played on expert, will probably try overlord on the next run, it started getting easy. I pretty much went pure warrior + disposable army all the time, maxing out evil alignment while I was at it. I loved that permanent alliance with orcs boon. Probably wouldn't got far without it.
And I really don't get this whole 'you need veterans' spiel. Maybe when playing order, maybe in multiplayer.

And could someone spoil a bro? I'm curious what happens if you succeed at certain random (or so it seems) thingy.
There's an event when immortal with that tutorial portrait seeks refugee in player's castle - anyone knows what happens if you win the fight?

Orcs and Hobbits are incredibly easy quests. I think some other ones were as well

Spellcasters are very viable, just not newbie friendly. Same as commander. Also note that on lv 10 you can go hybrid.
A 3rd circle spell slot, is same as 3rd tier slot for a commander, you probably wont have a creature to put it in when you get it, so consider it just an extra 2nd circle spell.

The diplomacy skill for scouts reduces the cost by 10% per level (Note, I'm pretty sure shops that you build aren't discounted, but they're also a lot cheaper to begin with). It'll never be cheap, but a single high level spell can be a game changer (Raising a false alarm (Scouting skill rank two) combined with mass slow is amazing).

You guys speak of alliances, I have never managed to form one - quests from neutrals are usually impossible like the golden hammer for dwarves (how to find it, where to search for one?) killing ogres for centaurs (finding six is hard, killing them even more so). Keep in mind two things about ogres: They have shit morale (9) and no resistance, so a single fear from a non-caster will bring them down to 50% effectiveness and a spell caster with a single point in spell power will bring them down to 40% with panic as the cherry on the top, and, because their resistance is <4, web is an excellent spell to keep them out of commission while your forces beat'em down. A mid-teens wiz->com could easily take down a pack of three ogres.

I'm leaning towards elves being the best alliance option once you get T2 units of your own, though, despite centaurs being so amazing for the early part of the campaign.

Are you feeling a little burned out of game? If so, dont start campaign it is very long. But to me it is much more fun then custom games, since you have to play with what you get.

I'm not burned out. I am just scared it will be a waste of time.
Not only because i am used to having everything but because the sequel is coming out fairly soon.
