You're just upset that your next porn game will have to be a lot like Elden Ring or otherwise it won't sell.

Hype Overload or not I will still be picking this up the moment the shops open tomorrow.

I played all the DS games as Sword and Board types but played the Demon Souls remake as a caster and had fun, so tempted to go with that again this time.

Never played a porn game but I have had a question about them for a while. Do porn game designers have unique challenges when it comes to button layout because the players need to be able to play with their left hand while jacking it with the right? Seems like those games would have some challenges when it comes to convenient key mapping I dunno.

There is no real critique of video games because video games are not art. Games are commercial products only, because they blossomed in a time when being one is the only way for an expensive piece of work to meaningfully exist. There is no appreciation of the past achievements. Gamers ask for remasters of old games ignoring how it erases the legacy of those who worked on them and devalues their effort. This in turn affects the game designers, I would argue, because why attempt to create anything significant if the average shelf life of a game is maybe 5 years. The craft of designing a game is irrelevant, because ultimately the visual presentation is what sells the game. The design-by-committee method of producing games and the lack of authorial voice contributes to the existing state of affairs. In short, ignorant reviews are only a symptom.

The endless regurgitation of old properties into huge media ventures is happening in more areas than just games. Look at the movies that are coming out. The only decent movie with an original script that came out the last two years was jackass forever.

Producers of media properties are looking for a formula that will make money consistently. If it's far cry style open world junk, fine, if it's dark souls style action-rpg, fine. Either way you can be sure that the formula will be milked until dry.

I blame marvel and disney for all of this.

That is true to some degree. It is true that Marvel/Star Wars dominates the current mainstream cinema landscape, but great films are being made all the time. The '10 was a fantastic decade for movies.

The hyperbole is real but I do think this will make a difference in the way open worlds are designed. It's not doing anything new but it's gonna sell a shitload of copies and games that are early enough in development will incorporate things that Elden Ring does well. Breath of the Wild really changed things and convinced the powers that be that you don't need to hold people's hands and make them stare at quest markers all day. People like to explore and discover shit on their own. This, BotW, Genshin Impact, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Ghost of Tsushima and even Assassin's Creed Odyssey/Valhalla are good examples. The old terrible way of designing open worlds where everything is spoon-fed to you is steadily going away and it's becoming much less overbearing overall

Elden Ring might end up being a piece of shit, we'll see, but a lot of people are going to play it and convincing the general public that they don't need waypoints for everything and maybe even quest journals being unnecessary is a win.

I always play casters with sidearms in these games. The combat isn’t tight enough with over-reliance on i-frames, size, and tells for me to get more engaged. But I think I always end up caster-heavy-but-melee-capable.

What really interests me is all the reviews that end with some version of "revolutionizes the industry." This makes me think these journos have no conception of what the industry is.

What Fromsoft brings to the table with Elden Ring is another example of AAA funding combined with uncompromising japanese slave labor perfectionism. Whatever your opinion of the Japanese work ethic, most people would have to admit that this kind of dedication to their craft produces well-made products.

From the reviews, it seems like what makes Elden Ring a good game is Fromsoft doubling down on quality, not so much innovation. And that's fine, not all games have to be innovative to be good games. But there's nothing "revolutionary" about increasing quality... it's just basic progression that craftsmen should aspire to improve their craft.
My thoughts exactly. You'd think all these 10's would warrant some kind of radical innovation, a new take on the genre or some such - but no, it's the same exact formula repeated ad nauseam now taking one step closer towards improvement. I've played all the souls games but I'll never understand the phenomenon behind this hype. I'm absolutely sure it's some sort of a meme now at this point.

I have one question about this game.

Is the design more respectful of the player's time? I hated DS not because it was hard, not because it was opaque, but because failing a boss fight meant a 40 minute slog from the nearest campfire, fighting through all the respawns to try the boss again. Die in 2 seconds because you haven't figured it out yet. 40 minute slog. Die in 4 seconds. 40 minute slog.

You get checkpoints right before the bosses now. No need to run back.

the decline of this thread is mindboggling and unbelievable

being hyped because game journos, beings so incredibly dumb they can't wake up from bed without tripping over their fedoras, shitheads so corrupt they make the average politician look like the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, give it 10/10... these fuckers don't understand tetris and pong, but you think their "analysis" of ER is relevant? they give 10/10 to literally every major game, you think they wouldn't to the most anticipated game of recent memory? how dumb are you, motherfuckers? "buh buh From has made one truly great game in the past 7 years! so the hype means it's actually great". wow... i mean, just by the quotes posted here, half (if not all) of them aren't even close to finishing the goddamned game

and then you dare mock the GRPG degenerates? by comparison, they're smarter than noble prize winners

i mean, one of DS2's biggest shortcomings was that (with DLCs included) it was way too big (yes, that's what your moms said over the past week), and this will be even bigger and that's somehow a good thing? after the hype dies down, i'm willing to bet it will be one of the major criticisms
i remember back in 2014 all of the gamejournos automatically gave Dark Souls 2 10/10 reviews, just because Dark Souls 1 was so good. DaS2 was the highest rated Fromsoft game on metacritic until ER got reviewed. Don't get me wrong, i love DaS2, but it was not a flawless masterpiece and it had a fuckton of issues on release. Gamejournos either ignored those issues, or missed them completely.

There is no reason to believe them.

Who in the fuck cares what arbitrary numerical value these moron game reviewers attach to the game? And is it any surprise?

Gather the relevant information to decide whether it's something you'd like to play or not. Use your knowledge of the past games of the developers as an indication of whether it might be something you'd enjoy. Get the game or don't. Get excited or don't. And remember, it's okay to get excited based on the former criteria, just as it's valid not to be. But for fucks sake, don't let your hipsterism bullshit get in the way of letting you enjoy a game.

Fuck this hype train bullshit, fuck game journalists, fuck 10/10s, fuck however million units are going to be sold. I'm excited for Elden Ring, and at this point there is no reason based on my past enjoyment of From Software games, my love of action RPGs, and what I've learned about the game not to be.

General practice is either to design the game around mouse only, or to separate dedicated "fapping segments" from gameplay.

I have one question about this game.

Die in 2 seconds because you haven't figured it out yet. 40 minute slog. Die in 4 seconds. 40 minute slog.

Apparently there's two types of checkpoints in the game. One that's like the traditional bonfire, and one that's right before bosses. No idea what the difference is yet.

you misspelled Sekiro

Bloodborne, bros. I will forever defend Bloodborne tied for the best modern Fromsoft game.

The other is Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition.

So IGN gave Elden Ring a 10/10 https://www.ign.com/articles/elden-ring-review
which makes it better than Sekiro which they gave a 9.5 to (scroll down in that article if you like)
and just as good as last year's masterpiece Deathloop which also received a 10/10. https://www.ign.com/games/deathloop
Deathloop deserved a 10/10 more than Sekiro deserved a 9.5
Deathloop is a 8/10 and Sekiro is a 6/10 at best.
At least Deathloop was a solid immersive sim. Sekiro was a mistake and should've remained a Tenchu game as initially planned, blocking to instakill health bars ruined an otherwise satisfying combat system and wasn't interesting enough to carry a whole game which is a damn shame given how cool the bosses and locations were.

but because failing a boss fight meant a 40 minute slog from the nearest campfire
what boss requires a 40 minute run back? that is like vanilla Everquest levels of corpse running time
