Bros help me out here. Is this game worth another shot? I bounced off after about an hour of playing. I got to the gargoyle fight in Dark Souls 1, but I just got bored of running through the areas over and over to get back to the boss. I know I suck at the games, but is it worth another shot? I died to the super-weak boss in the Tutorial Cave, and then came back and did the Guard Riposte thing, broke his stance and then killed him instantly. That was pretty satisfying, but the constant tension in the game makes it hard to enjoy for me.

A game that I played that I loved that had constant tension was Metroid Dread and that I liked way more than any Souls game I’ve tried. It’s probably because the controls in Metroid Dread are super tight and very slick.

So anyways, sorry for the rant. Worth another shot?

No, not really. I finished it and didn't touch it for a month. Just reinstalled yesterday to try to give it another go, it's just a redundant mess. Easily the worst souls game.

It's worth it if you enjoy Dark Souls type games. Elden Ring is that kind of gameplay but in an open world, with the positive and negative stuff that brings.

why not do a shield + thrusting weapon so you can attack while blocking?
then bosses speed wouldnt be an issue for you

First, it would only work with the cheese setup of Fingerprint shield + Greatshield talisman pre-patch. After patch, even that setup doesn't have 100% stamina conservation, so you have to lower the shield to recover stamina, unless there is some other munchkin build that achieves that.

But more importantly, that's not fun at all nor realistic, blocking is supposed to be an active thing.

Yes, IMO, but seriously tweak your approach and see if that works. I like impactful combat and etc. but I spend most of my time just wandering around and co-oping. Some of my favorite ER moments involve seeing a particularly interesting little piece of the world, thinking something must be there, and discovering a cave or secret area that was just well-crafted such that it merges into the world: I thought that site would be perfect for a hidden entrance and found it based on the three-dimensional design, which most games don’t bother to do. And the art direction is beautiful. The world is so well-realized, though empty with no climbing or alternative movement/exploration patterns, that it does effectively capture that BotW feeling where you just start exploring because it feels pretty good to move through this environment.

I think if you take this game too seriously and try to force your way forward, you’ll burn out. You’re not in competition with anyone so it’s OK to back off a boss, level up your character and items, and then come back later. There are mini bosses I usually skip just because I save them for later. Hell, my main build (int/faith bow user heavily using Carian blade spells in melee) is completely unoptimized in terms of the meta but I have tons of fun with it and have helped a lot of people because that character combines the things I find fun. It’s not fun to be “told” how to build your character but it is fun to just go with what skills and weapon-set make you enjoy the underlying mechanics.

TL;DR: this game is way more fun when you just take your time with it.

Have been taking a break from ER for like 3 weeks. Returned today. Adulas moonblade now does 400 damage instead of 1200. Ok. The FP physick no longer works on azurs comet, ok. So Sorcery has just been nerfed into the ground. Even with only 12 strength whacking stuff with the moonlight greatsword is now more effective than any spell I have (and it consumes very little fp, so you can carry more health flasks).

Guess I might as well reroll as someone who hits things with metal sticks as sorcery doesn't seem to have a point.

Guys, i got the ball bearing 2. Fucking finally.:despair:

I just wanted to get the fucking map but i didn't want to fight the twin sentinels yet. I figured it's right there and it's bugging me that i can't see a part of Altus so i figured fuck it, let's make a bee line to it.

On the way, i fought Margit who is a regular mook now, grabbed a total of four golden seeds, and then i recognized where i was and ran straight to the cave with the ball bearing lmao.

Fuck you game.

Yeah, just leg it to the bell bearings whenever you can. It'll save you a lot of issues in the long run. You can get the first two of all upgrade items pretty early on if you can get to Altus, but the next ones are hidden behind a few story bosses and a significant difficulty hike. You can get about halfway with both weapons and ashes with buyable upgrade items, but after that you're beholden to what's in the world until you progress the story.

I started my first SL1 run and the amount of ways you have to increase your stats almost feels... wrong. With Godrick's rune, you already start from 15 in all stats and can get to 20 in both STR and DEX with Radagon's Soreseal. With the Starscourge Heirloom, you can then equip any weapon that requires 25 STR, and pairing the Prosthesis-Wearer Heirloom and Millicent's Prosthesis you can reach 30 DEX. For boss fights, you can reach 35 STR and 40 DEX with the Flask, which means you'll be able to use any weapon you want. You can get a couple more points with stats-boosting pieces of armor, but 40 is already enough to gain decent damage from scaling.

Thankfully, gravity is still OP, and I died two times falling off Castle Morne.

Found this rapier killing a regular boss neat Mt. Gelmir: https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Bloody+Helice

Love the move-set and the look. Apparently the elegant back-step dodge has almost twice as many iFrames as the regular roll. The move-set makes you look like a fencing duelist. If I wasn't already doing my sword + board build, might have given this a try.
Heavy thrusting swords are all great if you enjoy their playstyle. It's a shame there are so few of them, but they are all quite unique and interesting. I tried powerstancing Bloody Helice and Godskin Stitcher, but I'm not a fan of the L1 moveset.

Heavy thrusting swords are great. Wish I'd found the Great Epee in Limgrave early in the 1st playthrough.

Never felt the need to powerstance them given that the weapon class has such surprising range and excellent poise damage on a guard counter. Natural fit with a proper shield.

Apparently halberds are a medium weight powerstance option with good range and poise damage. Can't personally vouch for that - haven't used them much.

The powerstance halberd moveset is kinda dogshit. It's slow and the poise damage is not enough to compensate for it unlike colossals. It'll work on lighter enemies but those with more poise will not flinch on a l1 and the damage potential isn't as good as using an ash of war like spinning strikes for when you can do more hits like a staggered enemy. (spinning strikes is also surprisingly good at clearing groups of lighter enemies)
It's good with jump attacks but.. if you're going to be a jump spammer you might as well go all the way with a good hammer or UGS.

It took me about 10 hours before I enjoyed Dark Souls 1, but now it's probably my favourite game of all time, top 3 at least. Once these games click and you reach competency I think they're really fun, but it's perfectly reasonable if you don't want to keep trying in the hope that you'll start to enjoy it.

Ok, taking out the Crucible Duo without any summons or cheese, just sword and board:

Definitely my most hated fight so far, 2 on 1, their staggered attacks, stomp spam, bullshit grabs, 2 mile long reach, all the bullshit of Elden Ring combat rolled up into a single fight. Felt good to teabag their ghosts.

A trailer for my SL1 run, where the valorous page Porky will try to rid the world of all the munchkins and cheaters by defeating the gods with the mere strengths of a regular man:

Will he succeed in his righteous crusade? Or will he succumb to the temptations of cheating?

Porky's Ring (or how you can beat the game at SL1 even without being good at it), in theaters this summer.
