After 2 playthroughs (one with a faith dex/incantation hybrid which I respecced to arcane/faith later on to take advantage of the dragon communion seal and bleed which is absolutely broken, and one with a pure no nonsense STR 2handed greataxe build). I had way more fun with the STR build, as usual, from soft is not the best at making interesting casting gameplay although it is somewhat improved from previous games. I really enjoyed the shit out of the game. It's the first from soft game I replayed immediately after finishing and probably one of my favorite.
Paradoxically, I have more gripes with some of it than other souls :
I do not like that the open-world QOL stuff like fast travel between checkpoints doesn't deactivate within legacy dungeons : being able to teleport out of a big dungeon to refill crafting resources is lame. Crafting made the tight resource management of consumables kinda irrelevant : I wish they made more crafting mats unique like they did with trina's lilies, arteria leaves and sacramental buds, because as it stands all you need is to find grace sites close to resource clusters and fill your stock of bombs/grease. Mounted combat is shit, nothing new under the sun.
I also do not like the summoning ashes system, boss fights do not work very well with split aggro. It's especially agregious that the lategame bosses are so much harder compared to what came before that they seem to be designed with them in mind. That said, it's still a from soft game, so if you bang your head against the wall long enough solo, you end up learning the moves and they become really enjoyable. Although it took longer for me to reach the 'ah, I get it!' stage on bosses in this game (especially late game), compared to previous souls games due to not so intuitive anime moves and combos that can string into different variants.
But, the increased customization (I love the ash of war, and posture mechanics addition), the really good dungeons, and world building, made up for it. I still can't believe how well the souls formula holds up because from soft has been making the same game for what feels like eternity now.
