Best companion Crony is back.

Logan, uh, is that the former Duke with a different haircut? Because if feeding Hybrid mana is the canon ending, that guy should be dead, the dude chimps out at you for being "too dangerous" (maybe he doesn't if you join with the outlaws, I dunno, but the outlaws were the least popular faction so I can't imagine that being canon).

Nasty turned into a wine aunt. Nyra hit the wall too (https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/e...PC_Nyra.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20171219175054 [open in a private window]) and her looks have caught up to her "I'd like to speak to a manager" personality, but she died in the dumb race riots in my playthrough so I'm glad to see that isn't canon (and since she's slaughtered by Albs if the riot succeeds that means the albs were kicked out).

Nah, the separatists die if they get kicked out too. (as in, you can literally come across their dead bodies outside the dome city)

In fact
they die no matter what in the two normal outcomes. Albs do the job if the outlaws win

This means that the "do 4 cleric, do 4 outlaw, fuck up the last one" outcome which locks the domed city in a state of forever cold war is as close to canon as we can get :P

edit - also, not enough Arx. Really hoping for Arx to come back. I want my asshole skinhead white supremicist
cannibal
God damn it :argh:

2nd edit - also, don't feel too bad about the "race riots" you mentioned.
The albs were literally giving weapons to the outlaws. This really pissed me the hell off. Like in a "what the FUCK is wrong with you" sort of way. Especially after I managed to get the clerics to take the albs into the fold.

They unfortunately earned their fate :(

I dont get how people enjoy risen 1 more than elex. In risen, few part (like getting out of the city) is one of the best piranha design, then up until you join a faction, the game kinda went downhill.

While the individual part of elex have nothing that is as strong as risen, overall it's a more fun game.

Rise DO have the best combat out of piranha library tho

They are all pretending. Nobody has enjoyed e.l.e.x more than Risen 1.

Ok this game is kicking my ass, I'll probably have to lower the difficulty back to normal. Or screw it, since I'm only a few hours in I'll probably just make a new character and actually think about my build instead of assigning points randomly. Don't get me wrong, I like the challenge, been playing too much popamole so I didn't expect the difficulty curve.

The best advice I can give you early on is focus on int and dex. focus on animal trophies (by far the best money maker in this game, and money can be converted to stats/skills), ranged combat, modify weapons, and a few odds and ends in that order (such as two ranks of lockpicking, armor 1, etc...).

With that in mind, (and about a thousand or so shards) run north to Adessa (specifically the domed city), pick up Arx along the way for an early companion, and find the cleric merchant that hangs around the domed city teleporter. The guy has a route, so he might not be there. I find if you rest in the nearby outlaw home he shows up.

Buy a plasma rifle from him and ammo (ammo re-spawns in his inventory after every transaction so he doesn't run out). The secondary fire will make the game MUCH MUCH easier (it's AoE and has knockdown. Don't blow yourself up). Use modify weapon to increase it's damage as you level.

Alternatively, you could get yourself to Hort from the Domed city (there's a few ways to do it easily) and get a flamethrower (which will also make the game a lot easier).

Those are the two best "early game" strategies in my opinion.

Not being able to kill anything is part of the early game ELEX experience. Just run away from everything, acquire a companion ASAP, and go around doing quests in all the civilized areas until you get/buy weapons that can kill things.

don't listen to any of this unless you want to have your game be turned into a checklist

also this makes no sense - focus on int and dex to get animal trophies because its monies, but how are you gonna acquire those trophies with your damage 10 lead pipe?

trophies is obviously gud but 'focusing' on int and dex early is catastrophic - what you should actually do is get like 30 strength ASAP to get the first rank of bonus melee damage and a weapon that doesn't completely suck balls

Using Plasma Rifle is not the best way to experience Elex. You want to have fun? Get close and personal with the monsters, feel their bad breath when you slay them. Melee combat is the best, even if most risky way to do it.

I was probably around 15 hours into my first playthrough before I could solo kill even a common bandit. I was leveling up by doing quests that didn't require combat but wasn't spending any points because I wanted to learn Cleric Magic first, then dump points to hit the requirements for the highest tier spells I could afford.

I would not recommend this approach, putting points into STR early so you can use a weapon that doesn't feel like a wet noodle definitely makes early game life a lot more bearable. You can always just slam Elex potions later in the game if you're short on skill points for a different build in which you don't need STR.

Also, if you can get your hands on the Flamethrower, that thing is basically a cheat code, unless they patched it since the last time I played. It has fairly low requirements to use, the Fireball type attack does OK damage, but the real beauty is that it can permanently stunlock enemies. Every hit with the Fireball attack automaticly staggers the target, so if you keep shooting, you deny the enemy a chance to react at all. I forgot if this works on all enemies, but it certainly does against all humanoid enemies. That stagger effect is so good that it will allow you to handle content way above your level, assuming you have enough fuel to keep firing. It's probably the best way to skip that early game pain of being a useless cripple, if you don't like that.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Is there really 100 enemies or the "young scavengers, scav, and variants count" ?

I do hope there is more super bosses at least. In elex when you can beat a mountain troll you can beat everything save for a crowd of colossus lasering your butt from afar

Started a new character, catching up took less time since I knew the beginning stuff. I kept the game at challenging, since I noticed that on normal it only takes like three arrows to kill the runt enemies before they even have a chance to counterattack, I like that even the lowest enemies can catch up and have a chance of attacking me. Also I've gotten more used to the combat system, stamina is key, keep blocking and only strike a few times, then back off and regen, if the enemy gets a combo on me, jetpack immediately upwards to escape and regen.

I can still kill only the weakest runt enemies semi-comfortably, but I decided to wait till I get a few levels more then dump all the points into something and experiment. Oh, and I cleared the berserker town surroundings of any enemies so I could explore more freely there, just pull the raptors and stuff to the guards and they'll take care of the enemies for me. The game almost gave me a heart attack when I noticed a weird rock shape on the ground with some blood in it, stood next to it and a fucking huge ass spider burst out of it and ate my ass.

Now that I know my place in the world, I'm enjoying the game more as I keep playing (and avoiding almost every goddamn enemy ). Entering any old ruins gives me Stalker vibes, cool stuff. I like climbing the transmission towers for bags of elex.

I avoided melee entirely because of how janky it felt and progressed from bows to a plasma rifle I picked up and continued upgrading until I picked up a nice legendary plasma gun, using a companion to tank.

I think people who think the beginning of the game is hard just don't know how to git gud. I found it hard on my first playthrough, but by the end of the game I had mastered the melee system and on a second playthrough the early game melee wasn't hard at all.

I mean that's fair enough, but saying that you must go through half the world at the start just to get the plasma rifle is a huge stretch.

I agree. You don't HAVE to do it. I just find it to be the most effective way to start the game.

I like the melee, but I get into it once I have animal trophies, and more importantly, decent armor before I commit.

And if using the the plasma rifle offends your sensibilities, then use the laser rifle instead. No OP knockdown. Just good ole fashioned range killin'. If anything, that's even better as the ammo is cheaper, so you get more profit from kills.

I really hope there are no more knockdown spam abilities in this, or at least that enemies above a certain threshold are immune to it.

The preview version just received a 30 GB patch (!) on Steam. I'll check it out to see if it changes/improves anything substantial.

They seem to have slightly updated Nyra and Caja's hair and face compared to pre-patch, so there's bound to be more changes around as well. And possibly even more to come before release day.

I think I'll start a new game altogether to see what else they've updated.
