Will be funny when the Obsidian/InXile spinoff of Fallout 4 blows the doors off of it. It really is embarrassing how little work Bethesda put into FO4 aside from the technical improvements.

"Fallout 4 was good in the attention to detail in the world (muh immersion) and that's just one aspect too."
I don't really get this argument at all. Boston is probably one of the blander open worlds that Bethesda has created, possibly even worse than Cyrodil in Oblivion. Even The Capital Wasteland had the iconicness of Washington DC and a couple of 'quirky' areas (i.e. the Republic of Dave) to play off of. 90% of Boston is just abandoned docks, abandoned houses, abandoned farms, just generic post-apocalypse wasteland and abandoned buildings for miles. New Vegas' world had so much more effort put in to trying to construct the world in a way that really gives the impression that the Mojave both has its own infrastructure and world that exists and functions outside of the player's involvement, while in Fallout 4 you can arm a settlement to the teeth with end-game armor, weapons, and missile turrets, and they will still be incapable of stopping gangs of degenerates armed with sticks and their own shit from kidnapping people and taking them hostage. There's nothing believable, immersive, or interesting about the world of Fallout 4.

Double funny is the guy being worried Todd might have his feelings hurt by people saying New Vegas is a better game, right, he is depressed right now with all those millions of dollars flowing into Zenimax and his account right now. Who says money is everything? I really pity the poor guy.

Operation Anchorage was Bethesda's baffling attempt to turn Fallout 3 into a corridor shooter, despite the shooting being the absolute worst thing about the game besides the writing

How the fuck can you turn corridor shooter into corridor shooter? Bethesda is all about "go there, murderfuck anything in this corridor dungeon and retrieve an item in this chest conveniently placed at it's end". In Skyrim they decided to place a hidden shortcut so people wouldn't see what piece of garbage they are playing.
Imagine someone trying to make a Call of Duty game out of the gamebyro engine, with Fallout 3's shooting. That's pretty much Operation Anchorage.

This game is so awful that I felt compelled to register a Codex account just to add to the vitriol.

Played it for 40 odd hours. Was expecting something pretty mediocre, but I wasn't expecting the worst thing to come out of Bethsoft to date. Where the fuck did all of their Skyrim profits go? Up Robert Altman's nose? There's no way more than a few million went into this.

I guess the choice between hiring writing staff who know how to spell and buying a giant billboard of Todd Howard spooging all over Vault Boy's face is a tricky one.

Let's be honest here: once you have played the game at least 7 times a little you realize that the game contains a lot of unfinished stuff (overthrowing Maxon) or things that look like it was quickly changed/implemented 7 days before gold status (weapons/crafting/settlements) that makes Obsidian's time management look not that bad anymore. Makes you wonder why a team with so much more manpower, time and moneyz had the same problems they did.

Then you come to the conclusion: a lot of that money was just burned in marketing. Advertisement makes a game a AAA+ GOTY these days.

Sad but true.

If this was another dev, I'd wait to see what they are going to do next, because a smart company would feel threatened by the lukewarm reception even from the usual people who give 10/10s like they are going out of style. But this is Bethesda. It will take them 5 years to announce a new game.

That quote about Bethesda being like puberty is nice.

Something like they use you until you're out of high school and then they're done with you waiting to prey on the next batch of 14 year old fanboys.

Yeah they really fucking smart for their marketing strategy and overall audience their have been targeting since Oblivion release.

Majority people that love their game in the past, complain about their next release because the furthering dumbing down their game. Will be largely forgetten by the next five year, because next generation of gamers is fucking imbecile that will be the new fanbase and defending their game to the death until next release.

Rinse and Repeat.

The lukewarm reception was only in some reviews. Meanwhile it still sold eleventy-billion copies in the first week/preorder. Maybe if they were like Ubisoft and shit out derivative titles every other year but when you have a 5+ year gap between installments then people will forget and hype will carry it again. Bouncing back between TES and Fallout is the perfect situation for their bottom line.

Bethesda is venturing the way of shiny graphics with less substance for a while now. Can't blame them from a economic point of view.
I remember the Morrowind reviews making a big deal about it being an "RPG game that looks great", with pixel shaded waters and all that stuff. Beth picked that up and delivered with Oblivion what the masses wanted: shiny graphic with dumbed down little substance. Sales proved them right, reviewers were kept in line, so they continued that path. Skyrim was a hiking simulator, without that (i shamefurry admit) beautiful landscape it wouldn't have been such a big hit.
Major complaint about F:NV in most reviews? The dated gaybryo engine. Visuals again.
Thankfully open world games like GTA5 sell really well on consoles, so Bethesda hasn't gone full cock-of-duty yet. Although FO4 is already practicing the scripted corridor shooter approach as well at times. Again, can't really blame them. Several AI controlled NPCs costs a lot of hardware resources and a scripted vertibrrd on a fixed route would've probably turned out better than what we got.

Ironically, pointing out FO4's rather mediocre graphics in relation to the pretty steep hardware requirements were a running theme in most reviews. If Bethesda aims to deliver TES6/FO5 with THAT engine, it's going to be a problem for them.

Nah, who am I kidding. With that marketing budget it will still be praised as the second coming of christ by most "journalists".

I think that the problem is that they dont have any real competition, people like first person open world RPGs yet Bethesda is the only one who makes them. Despite some vocal idiots majority of Bethesda fanbase actually prefer NV to F3. So Its easy to see how a big company with a big marketing, making a competent game could grab a nice piece of this cake while in the same time provide incentive for Bethesda to put some effort in due competition. Till then they will make half assed efforts because they know people will buy it since its only product of the sort on the market.

You would think that other companies would learn what audience want, thats why AAA games like new Tomb Rider struggle to sell and a small company making a survival multiplayer game sells multi million copies.

It's really easy to hurt Bethesda though. It only took two games (Twitcher 3 and MGS5, even on its unfinished state) to show people open world games aren't supposed to be as shitty as they make them.

That's true, but I think the bit about Tomb Raider has more to do with it being turned into SJW-friendly Uncharted more than anything else.
Then again Squeenix cannot into marketing.

NV already managed to show the same thing and that was a game made for less, in far shorter time span, was far better then their game and sold more. I still I believe that Bethesda will make shit games and sell strong until someone directly challenges them with a first person open world RPG. Especially with mod support to beat them completely in their own game.

Yep, I dunno why no AAA studio tried to make a Skyrim or Fallout 3 clone, this thing sells shitloads of copies and nobody challenges Bethesda, I guess that AAA companies move so slow that they take ages to notice any market trend.

They actually tried, but none of them offer the same things Bethesda does. Besides, having a rabid fanbase actually helps a lot. Thing is, while trying to introduce unique elements, every Bethesda wannabe strays too far away from the usual formula to be real competition for Todd &co.

Bethesda, like Blizzard, has a massive fanbase now. They'd have to come out with a press release saying 'Fuck all the retards who buy our games, they're subhuman trash' in order to hurt their sales. And even then it would only make a small dent.

The whole formula is just old and moldy, and its a shame Witcher 3 had to jump on the train and do an even worse job.

"Players love looting boxes filled with yarn, Skellige Gambesons, and chicken sandwiches. Just like the books!"

I have got on the bandwagon. Cue Fleetwood the Mac. And face of TODD.

So I've been playing this for a day or two. Let's start with the good stuff?

Because there is good stuff? I think?

Graphics are improved. Lighting anyway. And then you see the shadows from circa 2001. And then you notice the engine refusing to load textures properly half the time for half the meshes, settling for LOD textures so everything looks like shit. Bethesda in 2015 folks.

Animations for emotive limb movements have been improved. At times it's really good looking. And then you see the completely emotionless faces. It's like, Bethesda can't do one thing right without fucking up something else.

It's really stable! Like, holy shit. I haven't had a single crash. But wait, it's Bethesda. HOLY SHIT are there bugs and various glitches. Most of them related to the fucking settlements.

THE SETTLEMENTS. HOLY FUCK WHO CAME UP WITH THIS SHIT??? NPC's stuck on rooftops. NPC's stuck in the middle of beds. NPC's stuck, anywhere. NPC AI bugging out. Happiness fluctuating like an undecisive politician. Are they happy? Now they're happy? Now they're not happy? What happened? No power? Not enough food? What's going on? Walls/roofs/floors/whatever that might lock onto the adjacent object. HESUS FUCKING CHRIST. AND THE UI. HOW. CAN. YOU. PUT. THIS. IN. A. FINISHED. PRODUCT. This is the most unfun I've had in a long time.

So Bethesda came up with a beta patch. I think alpha would have been a more apt description. Fixed - long texture load times/area load times - no, it is not fix. Broke - mod loading, well there's supposedly some workaround but seeing as how I just use a tits mod I haven't bothered. Settlements are as glitched as ever.

It doesn't feel like Boston at all. I've heard one single NPC try a Boston accent, and that seemed to vanish every other sentence. Voice acting is vastly improved from Fallout 3 though. And I haven't had a single instance where I wanted to unload my gun in someones face like say, Moira. NPC's are ok. Quests are the same seek and destroy shit as before. But atleast the quest givers aren't total idiots - see Fallout 3. And I've yet to see a single quest that made me go WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT? They're uninspiring quests, but for some reason they cut out the retard aspects. That's something?

There's a single city. And fuck is it tiny. Aaand like 20 settlements that serve no purpose. WHO THE FUCK MADE THE MAP? WHO IS THIS INDIVIDUAL SO RETARDED THEY REALLY SHOULD NOT HOLD A JOB PROGRAMMING? I CAN'T SEE SHIT. It's a fucking mess.

Now for some LIES. Straight from the TODD. LOL THERE ARE THOUSANDS INFINITE INFINITE WEAPONS. AND WEAPON MODS.

Fuck you TODD. There are 10 guns. With about 6 mods each. These mods are all pretty much the same. These guns and mods are some of the most uninspiring shit I've ever laid my eyes on. Also. Bethesda don't seem to understand how certain mods actually work in real life. Bethesda also seem to think that turning a gun into full auto halves its damage. This is false. Maybe it's for balance LOL? YEAH. EXCEPT THEN THERE ARE GUNS THAT LOAD WITH SPECIALS. SPECIALS LIKE UNLIMITED MAGAZINES - SO IF YOU HAVE THE BULLITS, YOU CAN FIRE INDEFINITELY. BALANCE. WHERE IS IT?

I also can't craft weapons or bullits. Why? Mods will fix it?

The game is tougher than Fallout 3 though. I die a lot. On normal. I haven't bothered with higher difficulties even to test because I know it's just HP padding.

Fallout 3 had a really slim selection of enemies. Well, for some reason this number hasn't increased AT ALL for Fallout 4. There are raider variants like Gunners and Triggermen, but the AI is the same shit. On the other hand, you now have some pretty cool features like molerats and radscorps burrowing and ambushing you. That's kinda fun. BUT WHY ARE THERE SO FEW ENEMY TYPES TODD?

I really really really really really hate deathclaws. The furthere south you get the more you run into. I like the Glowing Sea, cool area. BUT THE MOTHERFUXING DEATHCLAWS. EVERYWHERE. THEY ARE NOT CHALLENGING. THEY ARE NOT FUN. THEY'RE JUST AN OVERLY NOSY INDIVIDUAL TRYING TO STOP YOU FROM PISSING IN PUBLIC.

It's like with every cool/interesting feature there's a massive downside. SOME FUCKING COCKSUCKING FUCKHEAD MORON HAD TO INSERT THEIR SHITTY IDEAS TO FUCK IT UP FOR EVERYONE ELSE. LET'S DO SETTLEMENTS GAIS. NO FUCK YOU.

edit: I should also say I really like the weather fx, specially the rad storms that can KILL YA. Well maybe they can. And Bethesda seems to have dropped the fake rain overlay and gone with sort of actual rain because cover seems to work. HEY ITS SOMETHING. Also, why are there so few new songs? I like the DJ Travis, well it's hard not to when it's not THREEDOG, but yeah, also shit does Travis have the same problem 3d did - repeating the same fucking news ALL. THE. TIME.

Ahh yes...Deathclaws. The most hilariously nerfed baddies in the entire game, where giant mosquitos would prove to be a bigger threat than the infamous mutated Jackson Chameleon that has claws capable of slicing power armor like a hot knife through tissue paper, which apparently now can't even dent leather gear. It's funny as hell when you can dodge their power slashes and tackles just by sidestepping a breeze, along with blocking their normal swipes that deal no damage when you do the block.

It's also hilarious when retarded fuckwits state Deathclaws hurt so badly, when you can simply tell them: "Hey Dumbass, ever thought about moving back or shift to the left or right instead of standing still and aiming at it?"
